News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

When I left the US for the long term I was critical of many US policies and attitudes...but after having been all over the world and spent years living in many different cultures I have changed my opinions.

I would really like to hear some examples...to get some perspective.
We hear plenty on the forum about what is wrong with the US, I haven't ever heard of anyone changing their mind about their perceptions. What do you understand now, from being in other cultures, that you didn't understand then? :)

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

"What kind did you want? Speak up man!"
*Whacks Filios on the head with bar towel*

*shopski sits down at table next to Filios*
*looks questioningly at Bratski*

"Yeah, how come you favor the Russkies so much? I did wonder about that. It's not what I would expect."

*Whispers to Filios..."he doesn't like to talk politics with me....sometimes he won't even answer me..."*

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

But if you think about it...what's best in one person's eyes may not be so great in another's. Good thing we don't all want the same things, huh? Maybe the basics are the same......nah, I take that back......I don't think everyone could even agree on what the basics are! :)

I would like an isolated cabin in the mountains somewhere so I could be a hermit.
No politics, no pollution, no loud music from a passing car's subwoofers, maybe a little snow and some good chocolate. Hmmmmm, looks like I'm going to Switzerland! :D

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

They eventually came out with a Gothing Powder - makes your blacks blacker than black.

We DO have that! hehe (Goths aren't so bad you know!) :D
The ad says......"no one wants her little black dress to turn into a little grey dress"!

Apparently there's only one American lifestyle.

hahaha....that's gonna be a big shock to Wisconsin dairy farmer, the Alaskan fishermen, the folks that work on Wall Street, the Texas rodeo circuit, and the Hollywood celebs!

One American lifestyle....who knew? *makes big eyes*

I dunno......I think now the focus is on keeping clothes looking new, so we have detergents that won't fade your colors! :P

Now THAT is humor folks....let that be a lesson to a few of you.

I just check the box that says "other" and write in "so white that I glow in the dark" :P

Oh my god Fisz, that article was hysterical! I needed a good laugh! :D

But.....Bush is a little bit dangerous, don't you think? hehe *how much longer before he's gone?*
*goes to put another X on the calendar*
The article reminded me of what we Americans have been saying on this forum for a long time......that most of the opinions of us and our culture come from "brief snapshots" that come from the media, a vacation, or our government's latest goof. Rarely is the daily life of America presented via these venues. America is a vast, diversified country, so unless you have lived in all parts of it.....comparisons end up sounding like something from the poem about the blind men and the elephant! *sigh*

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [123]

In sociology there is something called a "culture of victimhood" ....its a kind of syndrome. I don't know if it applies here (it's a rather complex situation). From what I gather the sociological phenomenon deals with an attitude or viewpoint of superiority via martyrdom.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

Sometimes one can have stereotyped views or memories long held which do not always relate to the changes that have happened in some parts of the world over the last couple of decades. It's usually one held by older people who have nostalgic views of how things were or should be. It doesn't really relate to the views of the people who are living in those countries in this day and age.

Sometimes? More like "most of the time"! :)
People don't like to change things....not even their mind! :(

Life / Thoughts on Music in Poland [132]

Oh, another thing.... What is Disco Polo? is it new? old?

I had never heard of it either.....but from what I understand, many clubs have a night where they play old disco hits from the seventies....and it is popular with the younger kids who (of course missed it the first go around). But somehow I doubt they "dress" in seventies kitsch....could be hard these days to find silver metallic tops, clear acrylic stacked heels and sheer lip gloss.......and a Farrah Fawcett hairdo :)

Besides wtf are you doing in a polish forum?

Actually....there are a lot of non-Polish people here. One does not have to be Polish to have a connection.....I'm not Polish and I love Poland, the people, and the language!
