When they began shooting the Jews they dug massive pits lined the victims up and machine gunned them. The people doing the killing started to suffer from stress related illness's. Any normal person who has been in a war and has had to kill people as I have will understand how there would be a massive stress factor killing defenceless people. I would like to submit my opinion for what it is worth that you will judge for yourselves. I was born in Ireland and have lived in England for over fifty years any knowledge I have of Poland was through my friends who were Free Poles.I can remember them sending parcels back to their relatives in Poland like medicine and other things which were scarce back home.

When reading this thread I go to thinking what my view of Poland was in the early sixties and to me it felt like they were in Prison. The whole soviet block was in prison the ones who were born into it knew no better. But the Poles and others did because their incarceration had been resent and they knew what it was like to be free.

When prisoners are released from a long term gaol sentence it takes time to readjust Poland is going through this now. It will come through it and be all the stronger for it you young Poles are the future of Poland remember the past but focus more on the future.

M-G I think that was Vernon Avenue I lived on St Lawrence's Avenue right at the top on the left hand side. It was a great place for a kid to grow up, St Ann's estate was our playground and Dollymount beach for swimming and hunting rabbits. Our local pub when we were old enough was the The Yacht which served a great pint of Guinness. I was over there three years ago, and I was not very impressed with the centre of the city and the spike in the middle of O'Connell Street. So we drove outside Dublin during the day, and spent our evenings around Clontarf were I grew up. The time prior to that was 1982 which was a much better Dublin then the one I found in 2007.


That was something I was more aware of the next year, when I went with my brother and not my wife. We went on a trip down memory lane visiting all our old favourite watering holes, the only one of the few that retained its character was Toners. The only change was old Mr Toner was long gone but they still did a great pint of the black stuff. And we did find the younger men were more racist then the woman as it is in London. Its sad really spending all that energy on hate instead of getting on with their lives and moving forward. For years I have always believed the name Ashkenazi was farmer, but I had also heard them referred to by other Jews as German Jews so I stand corrected.

Back in the early eighties I was working in the Highlands and I visited Cullodon many times I'm sure you will know what mean when I say it had a quite and strange atmosphere. I knew what had happened at Cullodon, but I had to go there to feel what had happened. The survivors of the battle were sold into slavery a fact which came to light a few years ago.

I have always found that people have more in common when we get to know each other. Only one of the Russian spoke English, and one of our engineers spoke Russian. We went drinking together every Friday night, and had a great time. We also had Russian interpreters about six and a great looking girl from Moscow. Its not my history I'm an Irishman, I was stating what my polish mates said to me back in 1960. If you know better then them who actually fought in the war, well good on you but I would rather take their opinion and not read about it.. I was a soldier in Vietnam in 1968 with the Australians during the Tet not called up I volunteered. And did two tours I have never read any accounts or book that came anywhere near the truth about Vietnam. Except an odd one from guys who had been there, and had the ability to write a book, The Poles I knew were from the 2nd Carpathian Rifle Brigade, They never spoke much about the war until I came back to London from Vietnam. Because they knew I would then understand what the hill at Monte Cassino had cost them and the betrayal they felt. I don't know anything about you, maybe you have been in action but from your posts I don't get the feeling you have.The last of my mates died in the early nineties his name was Stephan he was my good friend. We met once a week for a drink up to the time he died.
