Life / Cost of living in Wroclaw (rent price too) [119]

Is this amount, good for living (rent an apartment/flat, food, transportation)? Save for future?

That is a very good salary. If it's fair is another story depending on your position/work experience. But with 8400 a month you can pretty much do anything you want and still save money.

Work / Teaching English in Wrocław - TEFL, fair pay? [40]

Perhaps when you wake up at 3:45 in the morning.

Wow. And you feel this is a badge of honor or something to brag about? How many hours do you work a week? And for how long have you been doing this? Probably a year or less. You're going to burn out and soon. Another overworked underpaid TEFLer.

Work / An American studying in Poland - CELTA, SAT? [20]

Depends on the institution and/or the faculty. Blanket statements do not inform.

Well of course it depends on the school/department/faculty/course/year/funding/if the heating is working... etc. Ive met many excellent researchers and teaching professors, some cutting-edge research, some very bright and motivated students (half of which leave the country after finishing school), many universities expanding and building with very impressive facilities and providing excellent funding. And obviously I havent dealt with every university in PL... but I think the overall majority of it stinks. Disinterested professors who only care about their paychecks, the entire feudal hierarchy (and if you actually do work for a university you know exactly what Im talking about and how bad it is), bad blood between various departments, a massive massive problem with cheating/plagiarism/absenteeism/bribery, sheer laziness and mediocrity ... I could go on and on and on...

Not my experience at all. Perhaps you need a change.

No, personally Im very happy here. But that doesnt prevent from seeing the general modus operandi

Work / An American studying in Poland - CELTA, SAT? [20]

If you did the legwork to find out that there are "61" colleges and universities then go find out yourself how their ranked. I personally dont care about rankings, Im speaking from personal experience, higher education in Poland is pretty bad, incredibly outdated and entirely focused on memorzation. Hmm I didnt want to say this but I also work for a public university cough cough.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

I'm pretty certain you won't be able to provide empirical evidence for this, just "word on the street".

Well you caught me, it's was a made up story for me to post something on PF as I've got nothing better to do. I said in my first post that what I was about to write is "general sounding" and it's what I saw/heard/experienced at a local level and I something I saw affecting more and more people and outside of one or two industries I've already been seeing massive problems (construction and manufacturing, primarily exported goods) and the entire automotive market including used/new car sales and repairs. Werid though... since when did anybody on this forum care about empirical evidence and things like facts?

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

Ha ha... heh.

These were 30-40% paycuts Delph. Some of them now have massive problems paying off their mortgages, late payments are the norm. Everyone is borrowing money, selling off things, cutting costs even more. Of course management and partners/owners had no paycuts though, just the opposite. All its done is left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth. One guy resorted to stealing office supplies to save money and as a bit of revenge. This was someone who wouldnt cross the street at a red light.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

All very general sounding, but it's here. I see it with the things I buy and sell (or the difficulties in selling). I see many people have had their salaries cut. A few people have lost their jobs, or have been looking to switch their job... no dice. A company I work with is closing down, not enough work. Two companies haven't paid me in over 60 days. I'm sure in Warsaw the situation looks much better, but the exact time frame of events right now do not look good.

By paying higher wages would kick the economy in a higher gear.

Yea, nobody disagrees with that. But how would lowering taxes make that happen?

So the University of Buttf^k Alabama is better than, e.g. Jagiellonian University in Kraków. OK, thanks for the information.

Yes. I've studied at the Jagellonian University btw. And the University of Wroclaw. Wow, and check out the rating of the University of (Buttfk) Alabama, not bad if you ask me.

Work / An American studying in Poland - CELTA, SAT? [20]

Of course you're fluent in Polish, right? As how else would you expect to study in Poland where the official language is Polish.
You will probably need to get your H.S. diploma nostrified.
nauka.gov.pl/?id=1157
The SAT doesn't mean anything in Poland so don't worry about it.

Just btw, any no-name university in the US is lightyears better in terms of education and more "prestigious" than any university in Poland. And people change a lot after 4 years of college, you'll probably be a completely different person with different priorities and probably not with your girlfriend anymore. But you're 18, deeply in love and you know better. I was the same. Good luck.

Work / Finding work in Warsaw / Poland as an English private tutor [63]

Pantsless, I have a huge favour to ask you! Next Summer after I have successfully completed my first year of teaching in Poland I will upload a picture of my backside 'pantsless'. Would you kindly kiss it for me?

While its apparent you have a big enough coconut to have discerned a mild tone of sarcasm in my post, my intentions were hardly ill-natured. But ok. Eleven months (August 27th, 2013) from now send me a picture of your hairy butt, but I'll need proof that you're still physically located in Poland... how about you buy a copy of your city's local newspaper and stick it in there so I could at least verify the date?

Anyway, if you're still around by then (which I doubt, most never come back after Christmas), maybe you'll be a bit more thick-skinned, teaching does that to you. Good luck and talk to you in a year.

Law / Clocking cars and importation to Poland [47]

As long as it's not stolen and you give them something that purports to be insurance (along with a driving licence), they're happy.

That's it? The defining rule of being able to drive something with four wheels and an engine on Polish roads is that it can't be stolen and it needs "insurance". Well damn, I guess I'll take this up with Strasborg when they took my dowod rejs. for having my front windows tinted. And for my friend for not having MOT on a UK car even though hey, what does Poland have to do with British MOT? Ok, I'm exaggerating, but Delph..., when you say something like this:

One of the reasons why Poland is a nice place to live - far less obsession with this sort of thing. As long as the car is insured and the owner of the car has given his permission, they really couldn't care less.

I'd shut the hell up, ok? Try dealing with someone whose car was "insured" but really wasn't when he rearended you. And see how the police reacts. Yea, they don't care. So I guess I shouldn't either and pay for all the damage out of my pocket. Right? Because that's the "Polish way"?

also you can get 12 months European insurance you know, insurance can cover anything it all comes down to a price dummy. You should know that being an American.

Oh btw, the whole point of insurance is not to satisfy some stupid law. It's when you do cause an accident the insurance company is obliged to cover the damage you caused. There are people who buy OC on cars with German kurzeitkennzeichens and think they can get away with it, and the insurance companies don't mind because they make money. When push comes to shove guess who's forking the bill?

I've never met a Polish driver who actually obeyed all the rules on the road. Have you? And if so, can I meet them?

You know fine well that Poles don't respect rules that aren't enforced.

There's a huge difference between the "rules of the road" and having things like liability insurance. Don't confuse them.

They don't and can't. Data protection laws are insanely strict in the UK - there's absolutely no way the ferry/tunnel companies would share such records with insurance companies. In fact, if they dared to do such a thing - then they would be in a hell of a lot of trouble.

Yea, there's this country called France you see, and it doesn't belong to the UK, and it's at the other side of the Chunnel and ferry ports...

Law / Clocking cars and importation to Poland [47]

To be fair, Poles don't give a damn themselves. There's plenty of UK registered cars where I live - all without valid tax discs, too.

Ah ha. The lowest common denominator routine. Hey, those Arabs, they're all terrorists right? I met a bum on the street yesterday. Therefore, all Poles are bums. Delph...

The car was registered to a UK address had full European motor insurance, UK mot, UK road tax, I don't really see what could have been illegal.

I just told you why it's illegal. Did you let your UK insurance company know you were using the car 12 out of 12 months abroad? I'm sure you did. You know they do check Chunnel records to see how long you've been out of country, right? Btw, the car is or was RHD wasn't it? My god. The nerve. Well, at least you decided to live in a crap country like Poland, in Germany you'd have the the city council hounding you within minutes to pay road tax.

Law / Clocking cars and importation to Poland [47]

The less the authorities know the better as far as im concerned. Apparently at one point i could have had a pesel, fcuk that....

Then technically what you did is illegal. Having residence in Poland requires you to register your car within 30 days of ownership (of course when it's in Poland). So I wouldnt broadcast this fact.. or tell people this is something they can do.

edit: But somehow I get the feeling you dont really care. Pretty cool being a foreigner in a country and not giving a damn about its laws. Was your car right hand drive as well?

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

The problem is that the Polish nation will cease on its own if it is not backed up by immigrants.

Yea, I know, Poland's population will drop to like 30 milliion or so, and how can a country with 30 million people exist? I mean that's like impossible man.

This thread is the dumbest thing I've read on PF in a long time, and that's saying a lot.

Real Estate / Inheritance of apartment in Warsaw [9]

Can anyone please advise what we should do next.

Yea, I sure can. You and your husband didnt give a damn about any of your family until they were long and dead, only to find out about a week ago that granny's apartment/house is worth some serious cash and now it's time to go rushing in and grab everything in sight.

So follow Harry's advice, go to a Polish lawyer, let him promise you immediate action and a swift decision in your favor, have a lot of papers pushed back and forth for years and then lose on a technicality.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Bet you never lived in a city where it reaches -45 with the windchill and hovers at -20 most of the time.

Why would I live in a city like that? Im not retarded. When I want it cold I go to the mountains. What does that have to do with tires? If you want to get personal, then for me its evident you drive like my grandmother and things like curves and turns don't exist in Canada. :) Look, a smiley face.

Btw, did you hear about that other giant conspiracy, the one with vaccinations?!? Those pharmaceutical craporations seriously thing we're going to dish out money on shots on things like tuberculosis... puhleeezzz. Who ever gets tuberculous?

Due to a lack of bike paths, inconsiderate drivers and pedestrians, overall road rage, and poor bike infrastructure, I wouldnt count on it. If you want to live longer, dont live in Poland.

This pantless chap definitely fits that profile.

Wow, you nailed it. Thats me. I also overtake on double lines, speed twice the limit, ride 5 cm behind your bumper and park in handicapped spots! Best of all, I have a shaved head and drive a BMW. I am the pirat drogowy.

ok- then explain to me why in Canada it is abnormal to use summer and winter tires. The general population uses all season unless you live somewhere far north and then it is chains on the tires.

Because people are cheap? Clueless? Most people stay home when it snows? Or if they drive its how fast, 10mph? Maybe its cause Canada like the US have huge plowing/salting infrastructures aimed at clearings roads within minutes of snow fall? How the hell would I know what you Canadians do or don't do. You live there, you figure it out. Winter tires use different rubber compounds that are softer in colder temperature, offering more grip, while a bunch of design parameters allow them to actually steer and drive on snow. Yup, for me that sounds like a giant conspiracy by tire manufactures to steal our money.

whatever, don't explain, I don't really care anyway.

Why would you. Tires are the one and only thing that keep you on the road in all sorts of adverse weather conditions and speeds for tens of thousands of miles. If theres one thing you can skimp on and cut costs, it's definitely tires. Now a sound system, or tanking premium when your car only needs regular, thats where I'd blow my money. Dont forget to take out your ABS system.

winter tires and summer tires are a cash cow.

Have you ever even used a dedicated summer or winter tire? Do you even know why you should use a winter tire? Here's a clue, it's not only for snow.

never been in an accident.

Welp, that's all the proof I need. I'm going to take out my ABS system tomorrow, cause I never use it. And why do I even buy insurance? Silly me.

Law / Clocking cars and importation to Poland [47]

i think if you can register the car as a registered owner at a Dutch address for 12 months or more then you can import to Poland and not pay the import tax

Wow what a great idea. Obtain residency in Holland, buy and register your car there, pay Dutch insurance rates, find a job and work there for a whole year, then pack your bags and head off the Poland. Sure, you still have to pay all the other fees, but you just saved 3.8%!!!! (because who are we kidding, Marcus is probably going to buy something with a <2.0L engine).

Oh yea, being one step ahead here, here are the next three posts thatll appear in this thread.

Wroclaw Boy: "But pantsless LOL, you like big idiot :-) ;-) <3 you dont actually have like like and like work in Holland ROTFL FTW"

Pantsless: So let's forget the serious coin you drop on Dutch insurance (4-6x more expensive than in Poland). How do you plan on documenting your stay in stay in Holland for 12 uninterrupted consecutive months in the form of pay stubs, tax statements?

Wroclaw Boy: I have to go over here now, and like post something.

Doesn't look good for the Polish second hand car industry, does it?

For all I care the entire "industry" can rot in hell.

What??? Harry, this may come as a shock, but you live in Poland. Its your obligation to squeeze everyone dry of every last grosz, then follow up with ripping other people off, complaining, kombinowanie, some lying, a bit of cheating, park badly, and dont forget to take your dog out and let him defecate on every squareinch of sidewalk.

Law / Clocking cars and importation to Poland [47]

Isn't it strange that Poland as an EU state charges duty on something that is brought in from another EU state? Also the fact that they are charge for an inspection knowing that the cars from other states are built to the same specification. The other thing that seems ridiculous is the 500zl recycling fee, do the government actually recycle cars or do private scrap yards and recycling companies do this for profit.

Akcyza is excise duty, not customs duty. Any EU country can enforce excise duty. Ah ha, well actually, it turns out if the car's inspection is still valid for more than a year (like in Germany, inspection is every two years) then you dont need one. But not every urzad accepts this. Better get it and avoid any headaches, and who cares, its a complete farce anyway. I will say that the recycling fee is outright theft.

He just makes it sound like it's a big problem but in reality it is not that bad.

WTF? For a first timer, its headache of epic proportions and unnecessarily complicated, convoluted and there is not a single website on the net, public of private, that guides someone through it from A to Z, and if there is, it is outdated, missing key details or simply gives incorrect information. And forget getting a clear answer from an urzednik. I know, because Ive done it already four times. How many times have you imported a car from the EU into Poland???

edit: Oh I see, your issue is with the nomenclature. Thats so Polish.

Oh, in that sense. After a while I learned when negotiating a price to always ask whether nett or gross. If he says gross and you'd like to pay net and in cash, you could not only knock off VAT but even tell him to take another 19% off.since theres no podatek dochodowy.
