Genealogy / Is Aleska a Polish baby name ? [42]

Jogoda (Jagódka for a little girl) is quite popular and very old Polish name.

Also the name of the first director of the NKVD :)

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

Tell me Wroclaw, why do you think that ethnic background has nothing to do with these riots?

Again, you see what you want to see.

Life / Internet access, speeds and companies in Poland. [8]

UPC in Wroclaw. 120mb fiber for 150zl/mo.

I don't know anyone offering satellite internet access. I have a sat phone that I use when I'm in the air. Bought it here. If you need access when you're on the road, 3g coverage is available pretty much everywhere.

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

@ Parastie I'm flying into Wrocław. I think I'll take a cab into town and rent one there.

National and Hertz are directly at the airport. Walk out of arrivals and it's right in front of you. Just a word of warning, unless you're flying out really early or really late, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. It can take a good hour from Plac Grunwaldzki depending on the traffic.

Law / Poland on its way to Greece? [64]

Ignoring the fact that GDP calculations are ridiculous, it is meant to capture all goods and services produced. Turkmenistan is still a dump.

Work / Polish Salary and Tax [43]

No clue on the curriculum out there, but you can get a private teacher for a decent price. It might be a better idea to get something tailored towards someone that already speaks Russian vs. someone teaching to the crowd..

Work / Polish Salary and Tax [43]

That's a tough one. Polish in a couple of months even with a Slavic head start might be difficult. If you think you can do a Polish school, the cost is negligible. If you're going the international school route, you probably won't get under €10k/year. With that in mind, might be something to toss into the negotiations...

Work / Polish Salary and Tax [43]

No they do not offer Schools or housing.

domiporta should give you a good idea on what you can expect to pay for housing. If you're planning on sending them to an international school, it can get pricey real quick. €10k/yr per child is a good baseline. Hope they're young :)

My husband is not Cisco certified (that is what you meant by CCIE, right?). He makes now around 90K$ a year.

Exactly. See if he can get work to pay for it, then come over.

Work / Polish Salary and Tax [43]

My current Salary is 60K in Uk.

If you're on 60 in London, 12k/mo net will be a walk in the park in Krakow :) Are they offering housing or school?

Work / Polish Salary and Tax [43]

Thank you very much for your feedback. I want to have standard life style. how much is the Tax rate? Do they have tax deduction for Kids? I am really sorry to bother you guys. just want to get correct information before accept the offer.

Have a quick look at domiporta.pl to get an idea of housing costs. alma24.pl will give you an idea of grocery prices. Utilities don't really differ too much from the rest of Europe.

I'd say 12,5k puts you at upper middle class.

If you're taking a management position or a high end specialist, ask for the same money that you would expect anywhere else. The cost of living in Krakow isn't a whole lot less than the rest of Europe.

My husband has experience in IT basically since the computers first came on the market (lol), and that was a very long time ago. ;-) He makes a very good money in the States (he is a senior network analyst) and I was wondering if he could find a well paid job in Poland. Poznan particularly.

If he's a CCIE, he can expect that kind of salary. If not... might be a bit difficult..

You can get CHF loans in just about all the CEE countries. People that got CHF loans and didn't hedge...well, kind of ridiculous.

Food / Where can you buy a crockpot aka slow cooker, in Krakow? [38]

crockpot is such an American invention. isn't it better just to learn how to cook? :)

Just another tool in my awesome arsenal of kitchen appliances. I don't like babysitting the stove all day. I'm doing sous vide short ribs right now in the cooler...will be done tomorrow. Embrace the low heat :)

Travel / Direct flights to Asia from Poland [10]

Singapore would make the most sense, surely?

Dubai could be an interesting choice, but I guess not easy to accomplish?

No ME airlines are part of staralliance, so no codeshares. I'm guessing they would want to take the longhaul traffic to asia.

Travel / Watch out for airport personnel stealing stuff on regional Polish airports. [64]

Who is responsible for that? Who hires/pays the personnel to work on the airport? I guess they are hired/paid by the airport. Or maybe they are government workers?

LOT does the handling at the major Polish airports. FWIW, I've never had anything stolen....and there really isn't much opportunity to steal in Wroclaw as it pretty much goes from the belt to a single room where it's loaded onto the carts bound for the aircraft. They'd have to be pretty bold to rifle through stuff..

Travel / Direct flights to Asia from Poland [10]

What are the particular links with Vietnam that generated this popularity? Have you flown this route?

Lots of Vietnamese folks in Poland.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a Hong Kong connection open up though - Warsaw is becoming rapidly a major financial centre.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Quite a few banks are foreign owned, and for bonus points are spread around Poland.

I was particularly thinking that the financial sector factor should cause some demand. I imagine that bankers are much less tolerant of an 18-20 hour connection to get 7500kms than I am.

There would have to be daily flights. I think it would make more sense to open up a route to one of the star alliance hubs in Asia, either Beijing, Singapore, or Seoul and use their codeshare agreements to get passengers where they need to go with the least amount of hassle.

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

well as for imprisoning - people got imprisoned for bearing transparents reading 'Tusk matole, twój rząd obalą kibole' ('Tusk you idiot...) - somehow the police know who should they go after

Like that homeless guy that got tossed in jail for saying that Poland under Lech and Jaroslaw was turning into a dictatorship?
