Travel / How welcoming is Poland for an American visitor? And great places to visit. [43]

Are there any great places that would be considered "must see" sights in Poland.

Yes,the whole country :).But serious:
Kraków
Aushwitz(Very sad but also very important. One can learn a lot.)
Trójmiasto
Warszawa
Puszcza Białowieska
And a lot more.Look also on this forum, many ppl recommend places they visited.

Life / Will Polish people be accepting that im only half polish? [63]

I don't really care if you come to Poland or not but...believe me-people usually have their own lives and problems and you being half Polish won't be high on their lists of things to worry about.I don't like your attitude "white ppl share European ancestry" but that's just me thinking that you should judge ppl for who they are and not because of other things. If you get beaten it would probably be because you will say something like that and not because you are half Polish. And another thing-how this skinheads will know you are half Polish?Do you suppose they are asking everybody if they are Polish and ask for proofs?Or you intend to make yourself a T-shirt mentioned earlier?

News / Poland's Kaczynski blames Russia for brother's death [30]

It was us?

You didn't know? Poor child :D I'm happy that I added to your knowledge :D
But serious-sometimes I feel sorry for Kaczyński. He must live in a very sad and lonely place.I can't imagine how it feels when you think everybody is your enemy and the truth(of course truth in his opinion) you tell is ignored and ridiculed. That must be hard.

Life / Cost of cell service in Poland (Who has the best service for the money?) [3]

I've heard that Play has terrible conections. My friends are often out of service.I don't know how reliable my informations are. Also Play has the cheapest phone calls but ppl from other companies will be paying more to call you (almost all phone companies are in war with Play) .I have Plus and I rarely have any troubles but from comparison I know it's usually not the cheapest solution.

Life / Understanding Poland's Birthday Tradition [66]

There is such tradition but the level of "beating" depends on person who is the guest. If your friends are morons then it can be a little to much but if they are sensible ppl then it's just fun. What's more if this girl was really beaten so hard then why no-one reacted?Fun is fun but when someone is getting violent...

Love / Polish songs to say sorry [13]

I,m not a poet so my translation won't be the work of art-sorry for that :) :
I'm sorry
for my flirting and for my stubborn lies
they are so not worth your love
my good, the best (author is refering to his girl .it's like dear, dearest)
I'm sorry
for your tears unneeded to anyone
for my late returns to home
let's go back to peaceful harbour
like never,no-one,lovers.
my good,the best
for not sleeping during long nights
for waiting for me during the day
For all the things you don't know about
for all the things I know about - I'm sorry
Maybe...

Then he speaks to other men about saying sorry but I never send you that part (even in Polish) because I assumed that it won't interest you. I have a bad day so it's not good translation but I hope it'll help you. Good luck with your girl.

Rather not because in chorus there is something like that:I'm sorry but ce la vie! I can't change the way I am. I'm sorry but ce la vie. I will learn to breathe without you.

You are perfectly right.I thought about that song but I've read the lyrics and chose another instead.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

The young ones, under say 60, don't know what the Polish people had to put up with both the Russians, and the Germans. They need read the history of Poland, more so the last 75 years, than they will understan.

I understand but I don't think I should hate these nationalities because of that.Hating someone I've never met and know nothing about? It's simply ridiculous.

or Poles should hate Czechs. Learn history people!!!!!

Yeah,I'm sure they should be even grateful for our huge help before, during and after the WWII.

Life / How could things have gone so wrong (Poland church dress code) [195]

Church territory-church rules. If you don't like it simply don't go there.Every intelligent person knows how to behave and knows, that in some situations and places you must behave in a certain way no matter what you think of that (e.g. you think that dress code is stupid)

if the male should be covered for modesty and respect, then so should the female.

Of course they should but many girls are like the author of this thread.

News / Raising Poland's legal drinking age to 21 [95]

I don't think it's a good idea. What's forbidden is more appealing. What's more if you raise legal drinking age you should also raise the age in other regulations. It's funny if you can vote and join the army but you can't drink.

News / Which modern developments harm Poland? [83]

Everybody has their set of likes and dislikes but what does that have to do with anything?

And you can learn what type of person your interlocutore is.For example:

Jan Pośpieszalski TV talk show...

That suggests that you prefer right wing ergo you're probably a conservative type ergo you're not really in new ideas, new style of life.

News / Which modern developments harm Poland? [83]

No, I'm tired of scams, ploys, sucker traps, false advertising claims, celebrity claptrap, commercialist popculture and, above all, of those who divide the world into 'us, the movers and shakers' and all the rest just ripe to fleece.

And you have every right to feel tired but this things are nothing new.Just look how religions are used and were used forever.Or how kings ruled their countries. They thought that they know better and even forced ppl to do as they wanted them to live.Commercials and pop stars were always present only in different proportion.Even monkeys are vulnerable to fashion.

Language / An email translated from Polish to English using translator [24]

but it isn't and Pan is capitalized thus it's "you"

It can have capital letter because of respect not to the person who he wrote to but to the man he met.And some ppl have so strongly in mind that it's impolite to write about someone in small letters that they always write in capital letters.

One of them was a gentleman or a businessman looking for ideas..

I think this is the right translation.

USA, Canada / Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel? [157]

So someone asked you why you continue to stay in Poland.....and you don't even know why.

I know why but it has nothing to do with material things. I like living in Poland,I like Polish mentality, I like to be close with family and friends.

You could live better in other countries, provide for yourself better, give your children or future children a better life, have a better/easier lifestyle, yet you just can't seem to pull yourself away.

I said easier not better.Yes,I could get better money, maybe a better job (just maybe bcs I have humanistic mind and good international jobs are usually for ppl with degree in science),but that's not all.As for a lifestyle...I don't know if it would be easier or better.Children...even if we assume that life in other country is better now who can give me a guarantee that it will be also a better place for my children?

Deep, incredibly dependent emotional attachments to mommy and daddy to the point where they'll give themselves along with their children a life several steps down from what it could be, all so they can eat mom's pierogi and piernik.

You don't choose what your feelings are.But even if we could choose it's a matter of priorities. For me family is really important and I like to be close to them.

Even when I was 16 or 17 I thought that I'll go abroad but only for a year or two.I like to walk through my town and think that every place is familiar, that everything brings memories.

I'll never understand it but if that's the life you choose, you must accept the consequences.

I know that my decisions have their consequences and it's not like I don't think what the pros and coins are. Maybe I'll change my mind someday but as for now...I'm happy that I'm living in Poland.

P.S. Sorry it took me so long to respond but I'm not here everyday.

USA, Canada / Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel? [157]

It seems obvious that those that have, or are applying for, second citizenship, do not have a real problem with the oath. Some might wish the wording was a bit different, but that's not going to stop them from their goal.

Yes,for many ppl their goal is more important than some oath.I understand it and accept this. That's why it would be interesting to know what emigrants think of the pledge.

The group that says the oath is a betrayal, seems much more suspect. My guess is that they do not have much of a chance of obtaining a second citizenship to start with.

I wouldn't say that.My friend's mother applied for German citizenship for her daughter and when papers came my friend refused to take German passport. Also, one of my teachers could have U.S. citizenship because of her husband but instead they're both living in Poland.

USA, Canada / Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel? [157]

You can see this in Poland so much - I know several people who don't want to work far away, because they wouldn't be able to go home at the weekends. It's the same absurd reason that means students get such big discounts on the trains - because they would whine and complain if they couldn't go home every weekend.

I don't think it's crazy when you want to spend time with ppl that are important for you.On the other hand many students don't go to home for weekends because of love but for money and food :)

USA, Canada / Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel? [157]

They're unhappy, hate the weather, cost of living, whatever, yet they continue to sit in the damn place year after year.

Who said that I'm unhappy? That's not the case with me.I'm perfectly happy. That's why I stay in Poland-because I'm happier here that in other places. And when you say that ppl hate sth in their countries...every place on Earth has some downsides and the only choice we have is the type of disadvantages.

I guess it's just that "home is where the heart is" mentality

That's exactly what it is.

I'll never understand putting yourself through a subpar life just so you can visit mommy and daddy more often. Live for yourself first because nobody else will, that's what I always say.

And what if that's exactly what you want to do?You are living your life if you're doing things that make you happy.Even if the thing that makes you happy is visiting your family.
