Food / 'Wigilia', the traditional Christmas Eve supper in Poland [77]

Yes! We will all go to the movies. I plan to see Les Miserables. Family members want to see The Hobbit. It's going to be a Merry Christmas. The movies are a tradition with us but I want to eat a fish sandwich because it's Christmas and people are supposed to eat fish to express their faith.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

I am pretty much pro choice, just not about mid and late term abortion. Once the embryo's cns is developed, should the woman have the right to abort?

The morning after pill, for example. I am all for that and feel no woman should be restricted about obtaining them.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

Women should be allowed to have abortions shortly after conception but to take it to the point where the woman is already several months pregnant is ridiculous. The argument the woman is trying to avoid changes to her body becomes completely absurd by then and late term abortion is murder pure and simple.

Life / Latest urban art in Łódz - what do you see? [20]

It just looks too weird to be on the side of a building. Would be fine in an art museum. It reminds me of something Dali would paint. Sort of. That little yellow guy is creepy. Maybe he's some kind of pervert in the painting and that's why he looks so freaky?

Shawn, there's two sides to every issue. On the one hand, you have people who want to wait to have kids. On the other, you have people who want to have as many kids as they can. People should have the freedom to do what it is they choose.

Love / Are polish guys always looking for girlfriends? [5]

Are you hoping he will be your boyfriend?

If you are hoping for that, it sounds like he is not really bf material if he is talking like this. He doesn't sound like he wants a gf and who wants to be with someone like that? You would be undervalued and appreciated and you deserve so much more.

News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

If anything there are far too many of us. We are growing in number and soon the world will be dangerously overpopulated.

I was driving around today, saw several cars and several houses but not one bird in the sky or on the ground, anywhere. People expect these birds to control the insect population but there aren't enough of them to amount to a hill of beans. There are plenty of humans though. Everywhere. Why do people worry so much?

And as for pensions and such, anything that depends on one generation to take care of another is like a pyramid scheme and is seriously flawed and doom to fail. There should be a different way that older people can support themselves than this scheme.

Birth rate in Western Europe is much worse..., just saying.

The point it, the human species is no where near extinction and even if a birth rate slows, it does not mean the population will vanish over time so let people decide for themselves when they will start a family. It shouldn't be felt as a pressure from an outside source.

Please re-read the post more carefully. Polonia is not a place, it's a frame of mind. You take it with you wherever you go. When in Poland I never stopoed being a Polonian despite the years I have spent in my grandparents' homeland. Looks like you just like to bicker and squabble and, as they say, 'szuzkasz dziury w całym!'

Polonia is just a matter of being closely related to Poles no matter where you go! If you have close Polish relatives, you are Polonia!

News / 2000 tonnes of asbestos in Wrocław? [12]

This was a govt building btw.

Asbestos was sold primarily in commercial applications which is why it is removed from buildings so often. Although people could buy asbestos sheets, it was generally too expensive to put in products used by the housing industry. My Aunt works for the state Department of Air Quality and I was worried about asbestos in some old floor tiles in the home so I asked her about it and she in turn asked a coworker and that's what she told me.

The danger is in the removal at this point since no one uses asbestos anymore but if it isn't being removed properly in one location, chances are there are other locations with the same problem and that can mean more risks to the average person. This is why they tape each individual area off even though it's only one place.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know any amount of time exposed to asbestos is a risk, just like smoking. These little fibres get into your lungs and could cause cancer later.

The main problem is not knowing how much you are being exposed to. Let's say it's just one place one time. Likely not going to harm most people. But, if it's one place, most likely it's many places and that is harmful.

USA, Canada / Who is better informed, the expat or the Polonia crowd? [144]

P3 calls somebody intolerant when he himself is intolerant as hell.

P3 is awesome! Oh nevermind, I thought you meant P3undone and you were talking about Polonius. LOL. My mistake.

Have you any info to back that up?

Haven't the birth rates been published on PF many times? My impression is a lot of Poles are having babies in the UK.

Others just want to go forward by: gay marriage, abortions, feminism, affirmative action and obsession with $$$.

The problem is, Legend, you do not put real humans into the equation and you just assume these are the reasons for decline in population when It has more to do with other factors. The point being, generations fluctuate in number and you cannot rely on each one always being more than the last. If you want to see more kids, then you need to figure out how to make the world a wonderful place for them. Then you will see more of them.

Notice how they all run to Britain and then have kids? It tells you something about what they need to feel comfortable having a family.

News / 2000 tonnes of asbestos in Wrocław? [12]

I was at a bus stop a few months ago, works were going on above, it was very windy, white dust fell on me and some other people nearby, It seemed to come from a roof above flats over the nearby bank and bakery.

That is kind of scary. They are supposed to seal it off so the dust stays in one area or, at the least, spray everything with water before removal.

Off-Topic / Loading a photo of Poland from your mobile/cell phone takes 30 seconds, come on! [86]

Connecting the phone to your comp takes 3 seconds, finding the file with photos next 10 seconds. Selecting a photo and posting it here - about 15 seconds.

Pawian, there's an easier way. Just email the photos from your phone to your email account. That way all you need do is download once your PC gets the email. :)

And what's these pictures of bookshelves? Is this the "real" Poland?

JK, Pawian!

There is also coal,

There's a lot more work to be done figuring out how to keep it from burning so dirty. Also, it is hard to get. Ever seen the way they top mountains to get it?

Nuclear energy has a lot of potential - just needs some tweaking.

Mining just one medium sized asteroid from the belt between Mars and Jupiter could provide more minerals than we have mined in all human history.

But not oil, That is why the technology is more important. You would need to find a planet that has some kind of life on it in order to find oil and you would need a planet lacking any kind of life capable of utilizing the oil and even then you would be considered an invasive species harming the delicate evolution of that planet. You would deprive future souls of using their own oil. Would that be just and ethical?

Getting oil on the ocean floor? Deep sea drilling? You do know it's easier for men to walk on the moon than it is this?

o Exist? Why it would be a problem?

Well, most importantly people need water. You would be surprised at how water is treated around the planet. So much of it is polluted and then what little is left they put a huge price tag on. Water challenges will be paramount in the coming years.

Huge oil fields are discovered all the time, it is simply as of now not profitable to develop them. It may change in 20 years or it may not, but oil IS there.

You know, in Canada they are converting oil sands to oil which is very costly. If they are going to that much trouble, it should be a heads up on the situation and you should realize there isn't a lot of oil left. No one knows how much there is because to find out, one has to drill and hope they get an active well. Many times wells are drilled then nothing. No oil comes out of it. If it were so easy to get this mysterious oil you claim exists, they would have gotten it before converting oil sands. It would take more energy to get the oil than the amount of oil produced.

Whether its cheap oil or electric propelled tools doesnt matter.

Solar panels are the best option.

Birth rate reduction = greater % of non-workers.

It's not a matter of "workers" more like, "people requiring resources to exist."

We can have unlimited energy from sun or geothermal sources.

This is true and the technology should be enhanced. Human species should devote a lot of time and energy toward this.

World resources ARE more or less unlimited.

How can you honestly believe this about oil? There is only so much oil in the mantle. After it is extracted, it is gone forever. It will not be there after it is used and it is being rapidly depleted now. Doesn't matter how much oil is under the oceans because it will be used just as quickly. Then after that -nothing- unless new technology is developed.
