Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Actually I think he might be worse ;D

I'm trying to be awful :D

I see you've been reading Jan Kubisz.......

Naturally ;) The "Freedom and Friendship" and "I'm so predictable" clues should more or less guide you to the exact location. ;)

Oh sod it, one more clue:

From where I stand, men and women once paid their dues.

Well, now you're thinking in the right direction, but no, definitely nothing to do with the Szlak Lenina.

You're going to kick yourself when you figure it out :D

Probably near Cieszyn though...

I'm definitely not giving you any more clues!

(I will say - you're thinking in the wrong way about the Lenin clue)

Not the Olza? I didn't think that was a tributary of the Oder.

Bingo! Now the place, if you will ;)

(yep, it's a tributary of the Oder - begins near the village of Olza, near Chałupki)

Bystrzyca

Nope. Another clue...

This river is sometimes compared to the Jordan by local inhabitants, particularly in song.

The Warta?

Nope.

I doubt the answer is easily googlable.

That's the entire point of my riddles ;) You need actual knowledge of Polish language, history and culture, rather than what can be easily googled.

Freedom and Friendship, the two most important aspects of this society.

A fact he has a nice car is not a sign that he is greedy.

You don't know your religion, do you?

Like others, you appear to have difficulties with the life of Lazarus.

Great channel here, a bunch of body language experts dissect controversial people in media interviews....

Oh wow Maf, thank you for this! I love the way that it's relevant and up to date, and I've got the Robinhood one on now.

Sweet torture, huh? ;D

I admit it, the whole point is to impress you with my random historical knowledge!

Yeah, because that's not vague at all... lol Eh... Kaczawa river?

Well, there's two big clues in the sentence. But first you need to know the river in order for this clue to make any sense. But nope, not Kaczawa nor Bialy Dunajec.

Aaand... If it's in bold, it's always a clue ;)

Wait, wait, Atch...I'm always rolling it in both directions *and* I'm overdoing the kneading, so maybe this is the source of all my woes!

Maybe the perfect steak pie will happen one day...

I don't think this article was posted here, was it?

nauka.trojmiasto.pl/Co-jedza-nasze-dzieci-w-szkolach-i-przedszkolach-n126803.html

Meat (except on Friday), potatoes, fatty and fried foods still dominate. They lack raw vegetables, groats, fish, healthy fats... light soups or creams.

Yeah, delph is becoming as "merciless" as pawian ;D

I aim to please :D But yes, it's a tributary of the Oder.

The exact location - let's say "all roads used to lead from Lenin."

I just know this is going to be a nightmare riddle!

I'm a very predictable person, don't you know!

Wow, what a scum he was..

Yes, absolutely. A fascinating character, but for all the absolutely wrong reasons. Apparently there was an entire cult around him in the PRL, just to make things worse :/

also a tributary of the Oder?

This part is right, but the guess is wrong.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

I would have to do a lot googling and I'm not sure if even that would help.

Out of curiosity, what comes up for you when you Google some variation of "drunk general statue" in Polish? I thought about including a reference to the UPA, but he was such a useless drunk that he didn't deserve even the slightest bit of maytyrdom!

a wild guess

Nope :) I'd say that the importance of this river culturally is far bigger than its size.

No river is perhaps as important for local Poles as this one. It's the symbol of their region, and their hopes, dreams and fears have been symbolised for centuries in this narrow valley in which the river flows.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Here's a few tips, if you haven't already tried them.

Thank you Atch, I'll give it a shot and report back. I've been trying to make a decent pie for ages, but the pastry is always a huge letdown.

I was watching an old episode of Masterchef, and Michel Roux Jr was talking about how pastry is often avoided by professional chefs because it's so difficult to work with.

One mystery to me is how to make gravy as well. I'm just cheating and using sos pieczeniowy from a packet, but it would be nice to create something a bit better..

what does "pure" even mean?

I always get confused by this, as Poland started as the unification of many tribes to begin with.

Chrusty/Chrusćiki - No idea what the English equivalent is.

I'm confused, to me, those are faworki... Is it a different word for the same thing?

everything was there

Grr :D I actually thought you or Chemikiem would get it from the drunk general being assassinated.

That is Krzewina Zgorzelecka station

Yup :) it's a fascinating place - Ostritz is a lovely, but deserted town, while Krzewina is horrible. The station itself has seen some small improvements recently though.

A tendency to over cook

I've got the same problem - I've been trying and failing to create a good light pastry for years now. Either it's not cooked enough, or it gets burnt :(

Life / Poles turn their backs on organised religion. [85]

You must be blind to see how bad the current pope is as Christian leader.

Actually, he's doing a great job. He's cleaning up corruption and he's returning the Church to the values promoted by Jesus.

There's a reason why young Catholics love him.

She needs to be very firm - that it's against the orders of the dentist, and if it's not resolved, then she will hold the school accountable. If you want, let me know and I'll write the letter for her - I'm a master in the firmly worded letter ;)

A reminder that the title is "school meals in Poland"

It's in UK. I was actually quite surprised she wasn't listened to.

If it's the UK, it's likely that it's the dinner ladies being twats about it. They're notorious for having very funny and specific ideas about how children should eat, and the teacher might feel as if she can't overrule them.

Your friend should write a formal letter to the headteacher, informing them that she's not to be given dessert or other sweet food due to her dental condition, and that she requests a reply confirming that this will be implemented immediately. Simple, straight to the point and no ******* about.

Food / Bologna & onions in Poland? [44]

when/how

There's a lot of mentions online of how it was breaded and fried in the PRL, so I wonder if it isn't exactly as you say. It seems that real mortadella was made pre-war (and before?), but then in the PRL, it was promoted as a typical Gomułka-era dish where calories mattered more than anything else.

mortadela in Poland

I can't even begin to imagine frying it, especially not in butter or margarine.

Life / Poles turn their backs on organised religion. [85]

The figures are for the country as a whole; cities are becoming even more secular.

Not only that, but people are getting incredibly angry over the amount spent on subsidising religion classes. 1.5bn PLN yearly is spent on those classes, and for example, nearly 30m PLN was spent in Poznań on classes. They're a significant drain on municipal budgets, and are effectively a hidden subsidy to the church - priests and nuns are often expected to hand over a significant chunk of their earnings to the Curia.

Law / Gift tax in Poland [9]

without having to report it?

Per donor, but you'd almost certainly trigger an investigation as to where those 10 people got the money from, as it would look highly suspicious.

Pay the tax and get on with it.

They're going to get worse aren't they........

Yes ;) But I'll try and make them connected to history, because then at least you've got some idea of what each one is about.

You did well because that's exactly what I tried lol.

The original is "nie o każdym śpiewają pieśni, lecz to imię opiewać będą. Ono potrafi się wznieść ponad historię legendą" - but I knew a dodgy translation would be better ;)

Next riddle :D

Give us our train station back!

Ah, you're also right - I know it as Baligród, but that's the name of the gmina rather than the village!

The second part of the riddle was on some boulder that was located next to the statue - I translated it badly on purpose so it couldn't be googled :)

I've got more to come...
