USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

OK Fstop. So what do you call the dirty south? You seem to know a lot about Florida.. Surely you would not call Florida ,(Dirty).I have lived herefor 41 years, and never looked back. It is true.. There are a few Shidt holes down here, but they are in the larger cities. I live on the west coast, but I find that we are getting more and more Island people down here.. But still it cant be compared to the large cities in the north. I have attended Polish get together on the east coast as well as the west coast. Somehow they are well attended and bring a lot of Polka bands down here..So where are you located?

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

The original question was, (Are there many Poles in Florida?) I read somewhere that there about 500,000.00 Poles living here. BUT! can we call the 3rd and 4th generation of immigrant parents true Pole? After the 1st generation of Polish decendants, the Polish culture just about lost.. They just carried on Damn few of them can speak the language other than a couple of nasty words. Even myself who was brought up in a Polish speaking household would have trouble talking to a Native Pole..

Katkha; Your profile claims that you are a male. And you want to come to Florida to be with your boy friernd. I don't think that it will help your cause, since Florida is not too on gay couples. If that is what you are.

USA, Canada / Where can I find Polish Festivals in Southern New England, USA? [22]

beckski

I am going to take you back to a time when your grandparents enjoyed picnics in America..

During the depression years, Polish immigrants hired a stake body truck with hay spread on the floor. For 50 a family could board the truck along with other Poles, and head out into the country to a farm owned by a Pole. No one could afford an automobile..At the farm there were tables an orchestra and a dance floor. Everybody ate, drank, and were merry. Polka music and songs were heard for the whole day Food was plentiful. The kids played in the fields. At the end of the day, people mounted the truck on the way home.. Polish songs were sang by almost everyone.. Most were pretty well intoxicated

This is what we old timers call the good old days.I still remember one song that I will never forget
Jak ja bym wiedzialem, kiedy ja umrem. Ja bym zbudowalem zielaznem trumnem, A na tem trumnem ja bym siadzialem kwiaty zeby ludzie by myslawi zie ja bylem bogaty

Excuse my Polish, but this is what we call Polish Honkey.

Travel / Bent trees in Gryfino Poland.. (Any answers) [18]

Jon. You brought up an interesting point. After your explanation, I went into Google and found out that the western part of Poland was under German rule.. My Mom was born in Torun.. This was all a part of Pomerania. She told me stories of her early life in Torun.. She attended a German school and was taught to accept the Kaiser as the leader.. She spoke fluent Polish and German.. But along with her family they considered themselves Poles..

Question?? How did the Kasuhbians figure into this?

Travel / Bent trees in Gryfino Poland.. (Any answers) [18]

Not that early since they were planted in 1934 and not Polish either, since Gryfino was Greifenhagen, Germany in those days.

The trees were trained that way as saplings for use in carpentry. It takes about 10 years and is easy. Not unusual at all. the only curiosity is that due to the war and the loss of those territories by the forest's owner there was nobody who understood what they were for and therefore they were never harvested and the pines grew to full size.[/quote

Excellent answer.. It all makes sense.. Even the part that the location was in Germany.

Travel / Bent trees in Gryfino Poland.. (Any answers) [18]

In a tiny corner of western Poland, in Gryfino (not far from Szczecin) a forest of about 400 pine trees grow with a 90 degree bend at the base of their trunks - all bent northward.

Surrounded by a larger forest of straight growing pine trees this collection of curved trees, or "Crooked Forest," is a mystery.

Upon further research, and because of the uniformity of age of the trees, we suspect this is a man-made curvature. If that's true, the best explanation would be that these trees were trained as "compass timbers" for shipbuilding or as material for other woodworking.

Genealogy / Displaced Persons Camp / Work camp and concentration camp difference [86]

Merged:Post ww2 displaced Poles immigrating to Australia

I notice that there are a lot of Poles in Australia. Could this be due to the placement of displaced persons from WW2..? I recall how many countries refused to accept them. I know that America accepted many thousands of them.

Surfing Google, I came up to an answer to my question.. One of the many DP camps in Germany. Wildflecken . Today it is an army base.. Elvis Presley was stationed there for awhile.

Genealogy / I am of Polish descent (i am something called kashoop). Kaszub, Kashubian? [19]

i am of polish descent, i have known this all my life, but recently my mother said that i am something called kashoop

It sounds very much as KASHUBIAN.. Go into Google and type in KASHUBIAN. It is a form of Polish. They have their own language very similar to Polish. They live in the area near Gdansk. Their culture is somewhat different than Polish. You will find Google very informative and interesting

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Nuncka, What America do you live in?If there has been any upheaval it probably has something to do with the shooting of Trayvon Martin.
As an American I can tell you this is not widespread.

Try this on for size.

neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous

It would seem Zimmerman is guilty as sin, but, he will never get a fair trial now.

Zimmerman is in big ass trouble. But it only takes one juror to claim a reasonable doubt to blow the whole case. The concealed weapon law will do a lot to vindicate him. The trial will be moved to another part of Florida with a diversified Jury. Who was more guilty than OJ Simpson, and Casey Anthony? The jury freed them..

But then again, What juror will have the balls to vote for a not guilty?

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Yes , You are right in your assumption. At one time America was very much like today Poland. But after the 1960 America was starting to go down hill. The black birth rate exploded. Girls as young as 14 were beginning to give birth to illegitimate children at the rate of 75% i. The are no Fathers. The Government supported them and they continue to multiply. In 20 years it is said that the white people will be a minority in America. They are allowed to roam the streets in packs, like Jackals attacking anybody. White neighbourhoods are being destroyed by white flight. All that it takes is for one family to move in,and the for sale signs go up. No city is safe anymore.

Gun sales have gone through the roof.. Manufacturers cant keep up with the demand. Ammunition is scarce.. My wife carries a Glock 40 at all times We have a stand your ground law in Florida that allows on to use a weapon in self defence. We along with many others spend a lot of time on the gun range.

Along with myself, my wife has become a good shot. I carry a heavier gun.. An ACP Colt 45.. No. We are not Cowboys.. This is what America is like today

Enjoy Poland while you can.. It is heading your way.

People in Poland have no need for a gun. Compared to America Poland is pretty well crime free. But with Multiculturism it will come.

America is close to a race war.. Read some American Papers and get educated.. We have a bad minority problem..Whites are attacked on the streets, we have home invasions, and drug problems.. White's are fleeing our cities in droves. Even the liberals are starting to arm themselves. Life / Help me find this Polish band and song.... [117]

Siwy Kon--- This is as close as it comes

A grey horse, a grey horse, painted sleigh,
He went, he went to his lover.

He went and arrived, she waited for him,
and when she saw him, she gave him a kiss.

She gave him a kiss, whispered in his ear
Jasiu (that’d be Johnny in English :), stay with me, I’ll love you.

No one knows, no one knows, and no one will know
why our beloved Jaś was in prison!

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

unfortunately there are also places known as "food deserts"

I have no idea what you are talking about. The only places in America that are lacking in food markets are those that are in minority neighborhoods. They found out many years ago that those stores lose money..The same is true with our once prosperous Malls.. As neighborhoods change.. Businesses move out.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

One thing is for sure; food is freaky in the States. My Polish wife, kid and I are moving there in 2012 and we are concerned about the food. We are going to have a 'fresh food only' rule. Too much of the food there is processed and full of chemicals. My wife very poignantly put it the first time she ate in a restaurant there "All this food is from a box."

You might be surprised as to the abundance and quality of food in the US. Our Super Markets are chock full of excellent fresh food. What people do with it after they take it home, have no one to blame but themselves

Very true Fuzzy. A lot of these gluttons couldn't even fit on a bicycle seat they would need a saddle. In America , one could look into a driveway and see as many as 5 automobiles.. Very few people walk anymore. We Americans are spoiled. Life has been easy here for many years.. Now that things are getting tough, people are doing without more and more.

We have a bad situation in this country. Most blue collar jobs are gone. Without a college education or working for the Government, things can be tough for a lot of people.. This is not the America that I grew up in. Many young people have moved back to live with their Parents

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

Another good reason for obesity in America is the fact that both the husband and wife both work. At the end of the day no one feels like cooking so the eat out. Most of the food is fried with grease dripping all over the place.. They even follow this trend on weekends.

I am a staunch supporter of Americans.. But in this case they are a disgrace.

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

It is great to see some of the younger Poles that are trying to keep the Polish culture alive in Florida. There are many Poles in Florida, but they do not congregate in one neighborhood anymore. It only takes a couple of people to get it going again. It's up to you younger generation to keep it going.

Years ago i attended a polka festival on the East coast near Orlando.. They had two good bands and lasted eight hours.. I met people from all over the states there. We all had a great time. Good Luck

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

During WW2 I had the opportunity to come in contact with some of those foreign conscripts., especially after the battle of the bulge and onto the advance into Germany..As a rule they surrendered rather than fight. They had no desire to die for Germany.. As far as I know as a front line soldier, they received fair treatment from the American Army.. I cant speak as to how they were treated after they were taken to the rear.

Here ya go.. American style

Polish Chick;

Your version of the song is wrong.. There is no lady involved.

This is all about a Polish brigade preparing to do battle against the Tsar.
The part about the hay should be. ( Last night I slept on a floor, but today I slept on dry hay, until the next morning)

Here is another American version.
