Life / Examples of popular Polish music? [1001]

Not my style of music but at least you are making an effort!

Yes! Maybe pick a PRL era song you like and look at the lyrics and write about it!

More music from the PRL!

And for Mirek, something more rock-like (for those that like that sort of thing)

Bank was formed in Silesia in 1980 and after two weeks of rehearsal made their first recording (in a Wrocław radio studio) which led to their first hit.

In October 1981 they recorded the album "Jestem Panem Świata" which was released in 1982 and became a mega-hit selling 960,000 copies.... sometime arounrd 1983-84 the two frontmen Mirosław Bielawski (vocals) and Marek Biliński (keyboards) left the group which led to a rapid loss of popularity and the group disbanding.

My own history with the title song is kind of humorous.... when I was still learning Polish I thought that it meant something like "I'm a man of the world" and only figured out the real meaning.... many years later.

The song is about an old homeless/beggar on the street who shouts out "I'm the master of the world!" to passersby and sleeps on the grass in front a building. There may or may not be a political message..... does the man represent the PRL? Maybe... or it might be simply a street scene that made an impression on the songwriter....

lyrics: Grzegorz Tomczak, music: Marek Biliński

So here's that title song with my (quick non-singing) translation and then the original.

Note that the song seems to be in free verse without much in the way of meter and no real rhyme...

Also note the very tinny sound that was characteristic of most PRL recordings (and which some seem to try to recreate to evoke that era)

No need to copy-paste lyrics.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2823]

Why do cops in Poland carry guns?

Because they are entrusted by the state (which has a monopoly on the legally sanctioned use of force) to carry out duties that may require force. And the overwhelming majority of the citizenry (probably well over 95%) are okay with that.

Why are American police so incompetent that a large percentage of the citizenry feels compelled to carry around guns?

What do you mean 'copy paste'???? The translation is my own original work! Put it back!

I don't think any of us need your translations anyway.

I am! There's no point to listening to vocal music if you ignore the lyrics... might as well be instrumental and the lyrics are often interesting

I was going to post a bunch of songs with translations but I'm not going to if the mods delete my original translations for no good reason.

Why do the mods keep discouraging people from posting?

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [113]

Blair admired Thatcher and continued her legacy.

He was, if anything, more neoliberal than Thatcher though neoliberalism had moved more toward the left by the time he was in office.

Note the shirt she's wearing....

Such a mystery why Ukrainians don't want the degraded russian lifestyle.....

News / Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 10 [3349]

claimed Russian as their native language.

russian as native language =/= russian.....

Are the Irish actually really English? Should London bomb Dublin to gather in the English speaking Europeans?

And 2010 maps are useless and meaningless and using them as if they were relevant is intellecutally and morally bankrupt. how many people in Kharkiv are now hoping the russians arrive to relieve them of their lives and furniture?

modern russia has done far more to solidify Ukrainian nationalism than dumb old Bander ever could...

. they just don't want boring posts...

Thank you for that vote of confidence!

Posts with background information on the performer and/or song and with translations = boring?

So just random videos with no context = not boring

No interested in just posting random videos.... so I'm out of here.

No need to copy-paste lyrics.

Then delete the original lyrics but keep the translation (not copy pasted but my original work) there's no reason to do that.

News / Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 10 [3349]

russia lovers cry crocodile tears over the worthless gonzalo lira while remaining eerily sillent about russell bentley who was killed not by Ukrainians but by his supposed russian brothers in arms....

And something that gets neglected too often is that almost all of those responsible for the 2014 invasion (and those responsible for russian successes are also almost all dead, and many/most were killed by russians or the russian government....

And this is a recurrent pattern of russian governments killing those who carry out government orders...

twitter.com/ArturRehi/status/1782723725214765371

What sane person wants to be part of such a sick violent culture?

I don't recall you being invited...

Ukrainians are being told that that's their culture.... do you seriously wonder why they don't want it?

Does anyone here know why the US Army needs tanks and artillery to defend "America"?

America was the defender of the maritime global shipping order which benefitted the US tremendously...(until the neoliberal cost cuttihng order arrived to gut it)

russia and China want regional bandit kingdoms instead... and that's not going to be good for anyone....

Off-Topic / Eurovision - Today I will be ashamed to be Polish [475]

The German song for this year i

Early on I listened to a lot of countries as they were released and now I'm hibernating until a week or two before the contest

Haven't actually heard the German entry this year

Favorites in no particular order:

Italy (great vocal and she knows what she's doing on stage, in San Remo she even fell during a performance and still won
Spain (catchy disco-ish number with great lyrics in Spanish which don't translate so well into English)
Armenia (hard ethnic and I'm all in)
Croatia (brilliant --- the hook is the rhythm that runs through the whole song I just wish they sang in their own language)
Ireland (video's a bit overdone but the basic song's pretty good)
Switzerland (I want to like it more than I do, brilliant in conception but...)
Greece (urban modern and ethnic at the same time, and I like the performer who did one of my favorite greek songs a few years ago - mantissa)

I've heard Norway, Portugal and Belgium but they leave me kind of cold, I need to listen more to Slovenia and Lithuania I think they might grow on me)

Off-Topic / Random movies (not Polish) proposed by forum users [87]

Anyone see "Baby Reindeer" yet?

It starts off as a kind of conventional stalker narrative and then goes completely off the rails and every time you're suckered into thinking things have a chance to get to normal again the craziest stuff imagineable happens...

It's also kind of a dissection of a lot of 'woke' ideas about sex and sexuality (and how trauma and abuse play out longterm in the victim's life and how there are no easy quick solutions).

UK, Ireland / Is it good for Poland as Sinn Fein will win today in Northen Ireland [269]

Teenage boys who enjoy kicking or beating people

Years ago an Irish colleague who went home to Dublin for the Christmas holidays was attacked and beaten up (not bad enough to go the hospital but pretty bad) on the street (not too late at night, maybe near a McDonalds).

Anyhoo, when he told people in Poland they were horrified but he seemed to think it was pretty normal for Dublin...

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2823]

All of the safety and security arguments about this are missing the basic point....

A lot of Americans just like guns, as in they _really_ like guns.

The overwhelming majority of those who have guns (98 % or so) are responsible non-crazy people who are conscious of safety issues and are never involved in crime or other irresponsible behavior.

Those who are in favor of gun control are actually concerned primarily with urban gangs (overwhelmingly black and/or latino) but can't say so publicly because of fears of racism, so they try to justify gun control by attacking rural whites whose gun ownership very rarely involves serious problems.

The constitution sees the right to own weaponry as something a government can't interfere with.

Most Europeans just aren't that into guns and maybe a higher percentage of those who _are_ into guns are the type that probably shouldn't be around them.

Most Europeans don't think of guns as some kind of natural god-given right.

Gun crime in Europe is far lower per capita than the US (this is true of most serious crimes).

US =/= Europe, different societies formed by different historical and cultural realities and there is no need for one to become more like another.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2823]

Seems like a big number from a European perspective

I just guesstimated the numbers trying to over-estimated the number of irresponsible users and they mostly shoot at each other though unfortunately they tend to have bad aim and often hit bystanders... and/or they just blindly shoot into a crowd (party shooters...).
