That is one of the reasons I like PF photos, it is not a photo forum, so it can be a bit more rough and ready, which i find interesting :)

So what's the knife about?

I will tell you the yarn that was spun to me about it after :)

Of course, it is one of Krakow`s legends. I never said it was true. :):):)

Fair enough should I edit my last post?

I don't really know, it is a knife that was used for cutting cloth, no?

Too late, I love it.
Us Irish call it "Gift of the gab"

You ask about the soldiers, are the uniforms from their country?

What and why?

Is that out side the art college in Krakow near stary kleparz?
For luck?

Where are the dates and what do they mean?

In Warsaw? and they are important dates for Poland?

Whose countenance can you see?

News / Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT" [77]

maybe in the short term to pacify the population or at least keep it neutral and give it a common goal to strive for but in the long term its goal is to assimilate the conquered people.

Agreed.
Conquest was the fashion of the day.

Ireland has neither successfully assimilated into the British state as Wales and Scotland have

There are Scots and Welsh who would punch you for the mere thought and others who'd shrug their shoulders, same in Ireland.
As one Scotsman i met said to me, " you have it lucky, youz aren't stuck on to the bitch". Maybe not PC but he had a point, I think?

I see it as just their unique position and circumstances and only temporary.

:) Long live the E.U :p

I find many similarities between Poland and Ireland and virtually no differences,

I agree, except different ideology behind the take overs.

It’s a bit more complicated in Russian case but it sure holds true when it comes to the Germans.

Ok, i see where you are going with this, my point was about communists.
The German conquest could be seen as similar.

News / Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT" [77]

That’s not me talking,

I know. I was not threatening you at all, i just wanted to tell you of my experiences.

Yap that’s a B**** :-).

Yes, it is difficult for me to understand communism.
But I can see similarities wherever people have been conquered.
Ah yes, Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT".
And in Africa too, I personally understood or empathised with the blacks in South Africa than the Whites, something you don't forget.
(It must be noted that there are very many fine white people in S.A.)

Don’t kid yourself it’s almost the same and never out of love.

If you mean it was not out of "true" communist brotherly love, well yeah.
Maybe it was just a different way of doing the same thing?
But boy oh boy, communism is different.

I don’t growing up in a totally homogeneous country this is probably as alien concept for me as communism must be for you.

Possibly.

totally homogeneous country

Without looking, it must be Canada?

(And before anyone starts jumping down the guy's throat, these are his experiences)

Why do you think they called themselves Soviets instead of Russians?

A kind of "in with the new out with the old"?

This includes electricity, gas, satellite T.V., dancing girls, credit for the casino, the limo, basically all the modern conveniences :)

3600 Zloty is a very luxurious apartment in the centre of Krakow, with all the trimmings.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

they will continue until the end of 2009. Starting 2010 it will start going up if the economy picks up.

What are you talking about?
What do you base the 2009/2010 on?
I don't belive you have a clue about what you are talking about.

I think that the whole Euro thing for Poland will be a mess it's to soon but we shell see!

Read above.

From what I understand (correct me if i'm wrong), poland has already blown their initial target for adopting the euro due to relative volatility of the zloty?

Yes this is true.
The next target date for the Euro is 2012.
Hungary recently had huge problems and the Polish Zloty was effected greatly by it.
So Poland are taking the 2012 deadline for the Euro very seriously so the currency will not be so open to huge fluctuations.

I think people here are not being very optimistic, they are aware that they are tied in but the economy is healthy and banks are still lending.

I know what you mean though, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

value of the zloty

It is a generally belief here that the Zloty will increase in value.
But i am not an expert.

Poland won't be immune from the slump but will emerge much, much quicker.

And by the looks of it it will dip a lot slower and not so low.

and what's the story behind this building? what's the name of the building?

Well given what looks like a machine gun nest and a big metal door with what looks like barbed wire on top, I would guess it is a prison?

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

Hi Shelly,

I am going to Ireland for the X-mas too :)
I do not miss ireland so much, sometimes.
But I do not want to live in Ireland.
I might move from here in a few years, I don't know where to.
But who knows anything can happen in a few years.
Take care of yourself.
And keep in touch.

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

A few different reasons.
It rains too much.
I love to travel.
I feel that if I were to move back, that I would be moving backwards in my life.
I don't feel like I have anything to move back to, everything has changed there and I have changed.
I get very frustrated there after a couple of weeks, too many ghosts, you know memories of things past, some great, some not so great.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

but as far as I can see at the moment they will not give mortgages to locals, and are very slow if not also refusing to give money to foreign investors.

They now want 30% deposit, yes.
And it has always been a long and difficult procedure for foreigners, so nothing new there.

What bank(s) are you dealing with, and are they lending to locals to, say, buy new houses (a matter close to your heart I'm sure!)?

They are giving loans but the 30% deposit is required.
This will slow people down and there has recently been a a surge of people getting mortgages, just before this 30% thing came into effect.
But as far as I can see this is healthy for the country, people do not live on credit here and tend to save their own money.

I am not saying that prices will not be effected, they will more than likely.
I just get info back from Ireland and I do not think the same thing will happen here.

I am currently dealing with Kredyt Bank, (it's like pushing wet rope, up hill).
