Love / Are Polish mothers-in-law monsters? [91]

I only found out through our neighbour who took a photo of her going into our house

I think there is sth else, sth more fundamentally wrong when neighbours take pictures of who is entering your house when you're not around.

As for the topic at hand, I don't think it's a typical Polish thing - my former mother-in-law was also gruesome and she wasn't Polish.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

He doesn't, actually. He says they were gassing 12-15000 people a day, at the peak of operations, and that's all about numbers. He says nothing about burning the corpses, except for that pit for selected old and ill people.

I don't know if you have seen all seven parts of it, but at one point he talks about a pile of corpses lying around behind the gas chamber in the midst of summer. As you can guess what happens to corpses lying in the blistering sun, nobody wanted to touch that pile, not even with a pole (no pun intended). The Jewish workers said they'd rather be shot dead than to have to handle those corpses. And after that he mentions that the Germans had to pick those corpses up themselves and burn them. It's been a while since I saw the interview, but I seem to remember that he mentions the burning somewhere to the end of the interview. But like I said, I haven't seen it in a while.

But then again, why is the burning so important? If he states that they were gassing 12 to 15000 ppl a day, the point has been made, or am I shooting in the dark here?

This is a testimony about the fact, not about the extent of it.

I think his testimony explains very well the extend of things going on (in Treblinka), but there are more of those interviews. If I have time, I will post them as well.

I don't see this having any bearing on Irving's case

This guy was a perpetrator, he actually says they were doing what Irving denies they did. That's the bearing in respect to Irvings claims.

Edit: this interview is actually part of Claude Lanzmann's Shoah. If you get the chance, you really should watch it. It's, I think, about 5 hrs long though.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

Here's an interview with Franz Suchomel, one of the guards in Treblinka. If you understand German, you can see that Irving is a dangerous fool, like I stated before. There are seven parts of it and he explains en detail how it was indeed pssbl to gass and burn all the alledged victims. And Auschwitz gas chambers were even bigger than the ones in Treblinka as the Nazis learned from previous mistakes. David Irving may have been a meticulous researcher, but he interpreted the findings in a wrong way.

Edit: I see they have added English subs to it now. I watched it some time ago without, that's why.

Life / Polish "prog" music? I'd be interested to know about bands etc. [30]

This is probably the very first prog rock/heavy metal song ever made:

Macabre - Be Forwarned (1966)

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rhv4au28mz8

Later they changed their name to Pentagram.

Here is some more psychedelics (after all, that's where prog is originating from)

The Mystic Tide from NYC with Frustration:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yhoNN4OuNz8

Running through the night:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=n-TdA_x3AjM

And of course Mystery Ship:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zAZbBAJLEuI

All these guys were at least 7 years ahead of their prog/heavy time :)

PS: if you want to have them, I have all of these mp3's, except Running through the night.

I'm not a fan of jazz but when you fuse it with other instruments and styles, you can come up with sth good.

I'm not a big fan of progressive rock, but I can listen to Pink Floyd for a while, but the likes of Yes, Y&T and a couple of others usually don't last longer than 5 minutes. As for Pink Floyd, I especially like the very early days, when Syd Barrett was still a member before he went nuts. But I have the same with Fleetwood Mac, who was at its best when Peter Greenbaum was still a member. As for Jazzrock or -funk, I cannot listen to that at all. Not because it's bad stuff, but just out of the sheer "coldness" of the music. I've seen a few Jazz- or Funk-rock bands live and these guys were standing there with an attitude of "oh wow, look at us how good we are and how difficult it is what we are doing - hey look, here's a D#6m9 chord, never heard that one before, didn't ya?" and then -for me- the fun is basically over. In that case I'd rather went to see the Cramps, only the basic 12-bar songs, but with loads more fun, which reflects on the audience. I never went to a live progressive rockband, although I once had tickets for a Pink Floyd-show in Rotterdam, but I couldn't go because I was sick in bed with high fever. That was really too bad as I wanted to see them dearly.

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

It doesn't surprise me that the likes of you remembers this incident. There may be hundreds or thousands of white ppl that kill black ppl, but if one black individual kills a bunch of whiteys, you will remember only that one single event and not the other events. And besides, "did nothing but expressing their feelings about African immigrants living in their city" probably was nothing but a racist slur. Now, I'm not saying that those ppl should be killed for it, but they could expect a punch in the face for it. That would be appropriate.

Lovely thinking. I assume that, being Jewish, I can go around killing Germans for as long as live then, since I also have "a lot of catching up to do"?

I am of Jewish descent too. Both of my grandparents' families got killed completely during the war. So. I was being sarcastic with that remark; too bad you didn't see that. I despise racism in any form or any shape by whatever group commits it.

More stirring racial ghosts and fears...

The events actually happened. Do you deny they actually happened?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_civil_rights_workers_murders

How about we also show movies of what will happen to any white who has the misfortune of venturing into any black urban area today?...

I actually did so, twice. Once in the black area of Mnpls and one time in the one of Detroit. Nothing happened.

But anyway, racism should not be tolerated by anybody, not now, not ever. And it doesn't matter who commits it.

black racism is far more widespread and apparent than the remaining morsels of white racism

That may very well be, but how long has white racism towards blacks been around? And how long are black ppl emancipated in the US? If the black ppl have to catch up with the whiteys in getting even on racism, we can expect some 250 years of black racism.

Edit: and besides, violent acts of racism towards black ppl are not a thing from the distant past: remember Jasper, Texas, 1998? Or the events in Mississippi in 1964? All not that long ago. If there is any racist on this forum, I would definitively advise him or her to watch "Mississippi Burning" by Allan Parker. Great film about what happens when racism gets out of hand. Also the events in Jasper, TX have been turned into a movie.

I mean common sense - as I wouldn't go to certain areas of my-hood at night time.

Granted. That wasn't quite clear from your post to which I responded. Of course there are areas one shouldn't go - here in Dublin for example, you should definitively not frequent a place called Summerhill too often at night. Chances are that you will get mugged some day.

Its up to you really.

Are you saying that he should hide and can't go out to bars or sth because of those idiots? The guy's going there because he has been getting a job offered there. He should be able to walk the streets whenever he feels like it, without being harrassed because his skin-colour is different. In fact those harrassers should bind in, curb their behaviour and learn to accept that it's a modern world where ppl also will want to come to visit or work in Poland. Just like any other country. And it shouldn't matter at all what colour his skin has. If ppl have trouble with that, then those ppl have mental problems.

You know, I can't even imagine what it must be that ppl actually put you down because of the colour of your skin. What the hell does it matter? Just rest assured that these ppl usually are sick in the head or have other problems which they reflect on you. It doesn't say anything about you yourself and I think, from what I read from you, that you are a strong person, standing way above those tiny little racists with their tiny minds and limited capabilities.

Good luck my friend and keep us posted :)

I'm a black guy...

First of all, after Sokrates' racist intermezzo, welcome to PF. It shouldn't matter whether you're black or not, if you're good at your job, then this is the only thing that really counts. And I take it you are, otherwise you wouldn't get offered a job.

Anyway, I can't tell you much about how day-to-day life in Poland would be as I don't live there, but I can wish you the best of luck in your new job and I hope you won't have any trouble finding a place to stay nor with anything related to the colour of your skin. SeanBM is right, you should check out mask98's posts, it might be of value for you.

Again, welcome to PF and good luck :)

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [339]

First of all, thank you for this impressive collection of pictures, you put up a nice piece of work there and it makes sense what you're saying. In 1980/81 as a schoolkid I followed the proceedings around Solidarity (forgive me for writing the English name) and then it kinda sank away into the annals of history. To my personal surprise they re-surfaced in early 1989 and indeed in June won the elections overwhelmingly.

However, I do have a question: you mention that Poland has led the way since WW2, how should I see this within the context of Hungary 1956 and Czechoslovakia 1968, perhaps even Berlin 1953?

I think, but I am not sure that this was what Shelley was aiming at last year when she said that the West sees CZ (the mentioned Spring in Prague) and especially Hungary (not only the Imre Nagy revolt, but also the opening of the border with Austria in the summer of 1989 for waiting East Germans) as torch-bearer in the liberation of Eastern Europe. Don't get me wrong, with this I don't mean any disrespect to Polish efforts in that respect and I personally knew that it was the elections of June 1989 which set the dominoes in motion, but to the general public in the West it always has been Hungary and to a lesser extent Czechoslovakia that pulled the trigger. We didn't get that much news coming out of Poland and for some reason CZ and HU have always been looked upon as most "Westernized" countries, that is, through the general Western eye.

Food / Panga Fish (available in Polish stores); I'll never eat it again. Alternative? [49]

I dont mind Herring when it's fresh and not feckin pickled, however came up with the idea of pickling fish was one sick fuddermucker
it's horrible one of the few polish dishes i dont like....sorry lads....

Of course I mean the fresh one. The pickled ones are some Scandinavian invention and I only eat them when there is no raw and fresh available. Like I said, when I buy the ones in the Polish sklep here in Dubs, I was off the oil and the overdo on salt which they pour on those fish and eat them on bread. Best one is still the Dutch one, fresh and on a white bun with raw onions and perhaps a few pickles...Delicious.

I cannot seem to find them here in Dublin, however, last night a friend told me I should have a look at the fishmarket in Smithfield, Dublin 7, which is not too far away from where I live as they seem to sell all sorts of raw fish. Might get lucky there.

What about Herring? Delicious when eaten raw and much healther than Haddock or Cod...It just bursts with Omega 3 and 6 oils.

I go often to a Sklep to buy some of them raw Herrings there. Wash the oil away and it comes close to the Dutch ones. Of course, there is no comparison to the Dutch Herring, but nevertheless, it comes close :)

History / Polish history is 100% glorious [297]

Yep Polish nobility mixed with Dutch nobility, remnant of the great seafaring nation we once were. They met in Danzig in 1656; his great-grandmother was Agnes, the daugher of Boris Jansz van Bakzeil tot Stuurboord-Kajuit (modern spelling; old spelling: Borisch Janszn van Backseyl tot Stuurboort ende Kajuyt - or Kajuijt depending on North Hollandic spelling or South Hollandic spelling).

Tiet-jer-sztra-del?

:) actually you would pronounce it like this: Ticzerkstradeel (long e at the end, like in hey; the last S is just a plain S-sound)

E-mer-kom-pas-kum?

Em mer kom pas küum (with the first U as high U like in German Flüstern and the last U as a short e, like in ehm)

Now try to pronounce it :) Really would like to hear you pronounce that high U :)

Edit: now try the following words: verwennerij, verwijdering and tuinarchitekt.

Edit 2: oh and this one is really nasty for non-Dutch: voortschrijdend and zeilzijde :)

What's wrong with Weichsel?

Nothing as such, except that it's German - there are also some probs with Warschau instead of Warsaw.
