Life / iPhones/iTunes and Apple products market in Poland [47]

I would say most are not, they would be worried sick firstly about the mail service, then about credit card fraud, Poland is behind the times in many areas. Also American company?? theyre not going to like that, its long way for fragile electronic producst to travel by post.

Sorry to be slightly off topic. How are the polish postal services these days? (when dealing with packages from abroad) Few years back I traded 'heavily' with UK, managed to send thousands of packages with only few lost or delayed, worked like a charm, fast and reliable, delivery within 7-10 days tops from Asia, as opposed to fx: France where it was more of a game of chance. Are there lot of delays in Poland, packages gone missing, etc?

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

I think that when people see a black man with a white Polish woman in the street they are more relieved that it's not their daugther, sister etc who is with him, producing "devils offspring". You'll be alright.

LOL, I think he pretty much summed it up... (laughing through my tears).

yup, though I thought that was obvious. His message - You'll be all right as long as you don't date a Polish girl - racism pure and simple. I could be indignant and serious, sure but I chose to laugh it off (best way IMHO) apart from a single tear or two ;)

No it's not. It is a warning of racism.

meaning there is racism in Poland, kind of the gist of my previous post... well I guess I need to learn how to 'bend my messages in neon' then... now back to watching Robin Hood, surprisingly few black people in that flick (none so far). I think Ridley Scott is white-supremacist...

Apple will always be the favourite of richer people while Android phones will cater to peasants who want to look posh like iPhone users

That's the best part of Warsaw in my opinion!

I might have second thoughts about eating at a restaurant reviewed(positively) by you;)

History / Digital reconstruction of Warszawa - Miasto Ruin - rebuilding the destroyed Warsaw [31]

There are already photographs available for anybody who wants to see what 1945 Warsaw looked like: there is no need to produce an artist's impression!

why not, if an artist feels like it and is inspired by the actual photos, what's there to stop him from his 3D rendering if it happens to be his media?? that is exactly what artists do, historical events have proven to be very inspirational to great many of them.

Life / Cannabis / Weed in Poland... How much does marijuana cost per gram and how easy is to get it? [355]

I saw the original article while back in 2005, here is a quote pertaining to it:

An analysis of research studies with long-term, recreational users of marijuana has failed to reveal a substantial, systematic effect on the neurocognitive functioning of users. According to researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, the only deleterious side effect found was a minimal malfunction in the domains of learning and forgetting.
The findings were particularly significant considering the movement by several states to make cannabis (marijuana) available as a medicinal drug, and questions regarding its potential toxicity over long-term usage.

alcoholism.about

So in short cannabis seem to affect the short term memory essential for learning capabilities, the original article also mentions that the short term memory does come back to normal provided the subject quits pot smoking. Feel free to google it up, this study really made waves when it came out 5 years ago. As for the schizophrenia and the so called hash psychosis it seems like one would have to be predisposed to that.

Hell some people would probably go mental from staring at an elevator, especially if they were standing at the bottom of the elevator shaft and the lift, its cables corroded from the cannabis fumes, was about to drop...

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [533]

Upon stumbling on this passage from "Identity and freedom: mapping nationalism and social criticism in twentieth century Lithuania" By Leonidas Donskis from 2002 I can't help thinking that it just as easily could be said about today's Poland. Just replace the words Lithuania and Lithuanian with Poland and Polish in the text below (last two paragraphs) and you'll probably will have an eerie sense of recognition.

The Polish minority, although it is well accommodated in Lithuania in terms of Polish education and institutional settings for Polish culture, it is still pursued by the shadow of pointless debates, often initiated by the renowned linguists and historians from the Lithuanian establishment, about whether they are "authentic" Poles or merely Polonised Belorussians and Lithuanians. However the historically unprecedented improvement, in recent times, in the relations between the nation-states of Poland and Lithuania was a result of a realistic and sound foreign policy pursued on both sides. This gives hopes that the destructive ethnic debates will sooner or later be exhausted at least as far as the Poles are concerned.

In spite of the quest for the adjustment to new global political realities and above all, the pressure from the European Union - Lithuania is applying for membership - there can be no miraculous recapture of Lithuania's multicultural past. Political and legal frameworks cannot easily displace the authentic cultural or even the metaphysical need for the Other; nor should they be too rashly taken as a sign of mature political and cultural tolerance. There is still important ground to cover if the defensive nationalist culture is to be replaced by Lithuania being seen as one of the big family of modern democracies: this requires the recognition of otherness as a positive asset.

Hence , the crucial importance of liberal social critique pursued by Kavolis, Shtromas and Venclova. Such political essays by Venclova as for instance, "Jews and Lithuanians", "Poles and Lithuanians", "Russians and Lithuanians" and "A Dialog about a City" (his dialog with Czeslaw Milosz on Vilnius) revealed a huge gap between the need for the Other - still vague category in Lithuanian politics and culture - and a time-honoured tradition for self-centeredness, self-righteousness, and self-victimization.The gap remains a major problem of Lithuanian consciousness and culture.

Love / What do Polish girls think about dating Asian guys? [134]

How do polish girls think about dating Asian (Yellow) guys?

First they discard the purple ones. It is not a skin color bias rather a genuine concern for a possible offspring of such a union to suffer from skin discoloration (basically anything non-white hence the purple fitting the bill). Next they drink some coffee. As you probably know caffeine is very conducive to thinking about dating Asian guys, even the pink ones.

Love / Why do so many Polish girls dye their hair BLACK? [124]

Which gives them a very advantageous prospect of having their extra strong pubes transplanted onto their head. How could a girl say no to such a sturdy afro...

Did someone else post the economist article on polish/lithuanian ******** already?

A very interesting read BB, thanks. Especially one comment by Astoria stands out:

Astoria wrote: Oct 30th 2010 8:10 GMT .Why not start with the simplest things to do?

Lithuania:

1. Stop imposing fines for using Polish in the streets. It's just absurd for a country in the EU to penalize its citizens and businesses for using one of the official languages of the Union. The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language picks on Polish only, not on English, Russian or any other language. The Commission is under direct supervision of the Seimas, which can easily freeze the practice.

Life / New born baby traditions in Poland [26]

you stuff money down the front of its onsie

c'mon what kind of message is that to a newborn baby? See son, you must grab it, really grab it and hold on to it like your life depended on it, it'll keep you warm during the winter... Grow up and buy a wallet instead!!

we call it "polish money" and they are to keep it and not to spend it.

that sounds like another of those Polish jokes

Love / What are the best love poems in Polish to receive? [77]

Mów do mnie jeszcze
Mów do mnie jeszcze...
Za taką rozmową tęskniłem lata...
Każde twoje słowo
w mym sercu
wywołuje dreszcze -
mów do mnie jeszcze...

Mów do mnie jeszcze...
Ludzie nas nie słyszą, słowa twe dziwnie poją
i kołyszą
jak kwiatem, każdym słowem
twym się pieszczę -
mów do mnie jeszcze...

Damn I like this one. This is my very loose translation which in no way measures up to the original:

Speak to me some more
Years I've longed for this
every word of yours
is my heart's bliss

Speak to me some more
Like I was the first
every word of yours
slakes my heart's thirst

Speak to me some more
Here's no one around
every word of yours
in my heart forever bound

History / How much Poles trust to France? [93]

They only seek to use Poland as condom against Russia

wtf since when do people use condoms against something? Secondly Poland is not that flexible? Thirdly condom against what exactly - that extra hairy Russian snatch that looks like a electrocuted beaver with a gaping stomach wound???
