i agree with you - poland does not belong to western culture, represented by france, spain or italy. just like you said - poland isn't looking like those countries, isn't the same like those countries, so it cannot be a part of western world. how genius you are. let's take a look for finland. using your way of thinking finland isn't a part o western culture - it's a country to the north-east of poland, thats first. it's even colder there than in poland, so much, much colder than in italy - another HUGE difference between finland and latin culture. they are even whiter than poles, maybe both nations are part of some odd "snow culture of non-latin and non-western europe"?

do you know any of their national football player being black? not a single one? that's shame... how many mosques is in finland? maybe still not enough? maybe because finnish are rasists? maybe that's why they have morea ikea's than mosque's? what a great idea... and last but not least - finland isn't looking just like spain or france, lots of non-latin-culture lakes and forests with non-latin trees :)

so conclusion is: pray to not be dropped to finland.

in southern poland very useful unharmless swear is: "ty pierunie" which means in enlglish: "you lightning". or "ty giździe", or even "ty ciućmoku" and even more even "ty ćmiylu".

outcome is that, "W szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" is not so hard to spell :)

hello,
i've read something about them, and it was sentimental story about poles sent to haiti by napoleon in order to crush the uprising of locals. of course, poles changed side in favor of the insurgents, and about 200 dwelt on the island. they had children with local women, things like this.

in mine opinion they are haitians, not poles. yes i know that there is a interesting and sentimental thing, because they remember about their origin for 200 years, etc, but still - they are haitians. maybe i'm not sentimental...

hi teffle,
english, first of all, is language of international business, and it isn't so popular when talking about tourism. have you ever seen germans, russians, french, etc speaking english on their holidays?

knowledge of english isn't so common in continental europe - eg. in germany. try to talk english there with staff on gas stations or in shops. the same with hungary, even in budapest.

in mine opinion it is quite rude to criticize foreigners for not knowing my native language.

ups, i did not make myself clear. its rude, to come to other country, and expect, that almost everyone there will be able to speak with me with my native language - eg. going to us and expecting that almost everyone will be able to speak with me with polish - the same with being american, and expecting that almost every pole speaks english. it's rude, and... silly :)

it rather not possible. most of polish jews lived separately in their towns - "sztetl". they didn't know polish history, and they didn't speak polish, except very few necessary words. they lived inside their world - there was very few mixed marriages. that's it.

most of jews which lived in poland lived in "sztetl" cities. most of jews which lived in bigger polish cities (kraków, warszawa, etc) lived also separetly - they have their own religious schools, they cherished their heritage, their own theaters, art, literature - all in hebrew or yiddish. did you know that about 75% of polish jews didn't speak polish - even when talking about pre-II war period? it's completely different compared to western europe of the same time.

yes, some poles mixed with jews - but they were rare exceptions, due to Jewish aversion to intermarriage.

i don't judge that situation - for me its just statistical fact - there was no mixing. end of the story.

hey alex - i'll explain you :) statistics is tool tor finding major rules - correlation, probability etc. so i can say that from stat point of view there was no mixing - or - to be more strict - there was small probability of intermarriage :). i'm sure that everything is clear now - "small probability" means "yes some poles mixed with jews" - but still - it wasn't a rule...
