History / Poland's January Uprisings of 1863 [86]

Back to the uprisings....what brought it about and what went wrong? Need my history lesson for the day....

OK.. I teach myself....Wikipedia says that it was started by young people who were rebelling against being forced into involuntary labor in the Russian army, and that it was the longest uprising-lasting for two years. The article also says that no cities were recaptured and the Poles had to resort to guerilla tactics. Russia retaliated against the Poles with executions and deportations to Siberia.

So I'm thinking that the "will to fight" was there, but there was not enough support, organization, and communication to pull it off. Otherwise, there may have been a very different outcome.

But I also think that the enormous bloodshed described is tragic, for so little to have been gained. But if I were in the same situation, and things were bad enough, I might to choose to fight and be free in death, if necessary, rather than to live in oppression.

Patrycja, were there any records kept of the deportations as a means to trace your family member? Wasn't everyone required to carry "papers" in those times to get through check points?

Witek, maybe the uprisings did not seem worth it to you because the desired result was not acheived. But to the people who stood up and fought, the cause was worthwhile enough to them to lay down their lives for what they believed. I have to respect that.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

At least you are one Pole who never seems to be miserable, even if maybe it is warranted! :)

Why are all Polish people like 6 feet tall or more? Because you are probably still growing, and gonna get taller!
It like "land of the giants" or something!

dziwak what does that mean

I think that would be like "wierdo" in English, but it might have a more subtle meaning.

I think BubbaWoo is probably joking with you...

But then again, guys can be like that sometimes, especially around their friends.
Pay attention to how he says things...you might get some clues there :)

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I agree with Daffy but why does everyone crowd into the bus or tram as if it were the last bus or tram EVER to go to their destination ?

Ahhh, the "sardine instinct". You can also witness this at Disneyland :)

Czesław Miłosz

Wow, Puzzly. Your view of him really surprized me......not what I would have expected. He wrote of life under oppression, and what that does to the pysche. Interesting. You have thrown me your first "official curve ball"... :D

Besides wtf are you doing in a polish forum?

Actually....there are a lot of non-Polish people here. One does not have to be Polish to have a connection.....I'm not Polish and I love Poland, the people, and the language!

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

Sometimes one can have stereotyped views or memories long held which do not always relate to the changes that have happened in some parts of the world over the last couple of decades. It's usually one held by older people who have nostalgic views of how things were or should be. It doesn't really relate to the views of the people who are living in those countries in this day and age.

Sometimes? More like "most of the time"! :)
People don't like to change things....not even their mind! :(

They eventually came out with a Gothing Powder - makes your blacks blacker than black.

We DO have that! hehe (Goths aren't so bad you know!) :D
The ad says......"no one wants her little black dress to turn into a little grey dress"!
