Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

One of our cousins (we seem to have so many!). Wanted to buy a 30sq meter new build apartment. For sale at around 180,000ZL. My mother in law who is an accountant did the maths, He would end up paying 1200zl a month for 25years. The total cost of he flat plus interest amounted to 360,000zl. (sorry I cant be more precise on figures and years, but I'm remembering what I can).

1200zl a month and he doesn't earn more than 2000zl a month, would leave him with 800zl a month for bills, food etc... not much fun.

Another friend of ours has been trying to sell her flat in Poland so she can invest in the UK market when it hits rock bottom. She has had one buyer pull out because the bank agreed a loan and then changed its mind. The poor buyer lost 10,000zl deposit.

I have heard of many people having had loan terms agreed only to be then totalled, there isn't any money to loan....? very strange...

The Polish propertymarket is a bubble, which needs to burst, the sooner the better.

Love / Do Polish Women age well? [153]

What constitutes "aging well?", its in the genes I don't thing it applies to nationalities. I think lifestyle and weather conditions are also factors as if sadly wealth. Wealthy people "age better" because they can afford better health care.

Who cares anyway, we men may fall in lust with looks, but you can only love the person.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [554]

Due to a polarity shift in the temporal reality paradigm, I am stuck in Poland.
However, when I get this f*cking Tardis to work, I am out of here....

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [93]

The thing I is dislike about this day, is that Poles take to the roads en mass to drive to their relatives graves resulting in lots of people being killed on the roads. Genius.

Every year the media does a body count after the weekend how insane is that!!

That for me kinda sums up the thing, people dying to for the dead!!!

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [73]

One of my students recently remarked that she had seen a black chap (shock horror!!!!) at the cinema and he was speaking English ( could it be possible???). She then voiced her surprise, how he could watch the films if he couldn't read the Polish subtitles?

..Fall off my chair...

I nearly threw myself out the window....

Unfortunately the situation in Poland all to often requires one to lie, cheat and scheme just to make an extra few zloty.

Absolutely.

I was told the other day, "to make your first million you have to steal it".

it is not just about making a few extra Zloty.

It is endemic throughout the system al the way to the top.

The real question is why do the majority of Polish in Poland think that Poland is not worth fighting for?

The kicker is, why do people not living in Poland think it IS worth fighting for....

Food / Taste of food in Poland vs other countries [186]

I have recently taken to drinking vodka, eating sledge and drinking sweet tea with lemon. It is amazing i can polish off (no pun) 70cl bottle, a plate of sledge and a pot of tea and wake up feeling great in the morning. Seriously it works, must be the fish oil and tea.

Bigos can smell weird and look like ****, but hey the only time I eat it is at the in laws.

The only things i miss are easy access to lamb and real decent mature beef steak. Both of which are a bugger to find. Lucky for me there is a decent indian restaurant and french place within half hour drive which help sate my appetite.

As a youth I worked in a Pub both as a bartender and a microwave technician. :)

London is absolutely awesome for foodies. My wife and I once went to an Ethiopian restaurant in Brixton. It was hilarious, there wasn't any cutlery, just this pancake thing that you tore up and mopped up the food with!

The most fun i've had in a Polish traditional restaurant in Poland was when I ordered roast duck and was served a whole roast duck!!!

..The most fun...boy do I sound exciting :(

Life / My experience in Poland 15 years ago as an American trying to live and work there. [167]

But what has Nigeria contributed to the United States?

Oil and lots off it

The Brits can now come to Poland with their capital and make everything expensive.

Rubbish

Believe me the majority of external investment was made in the early nineties by German and French companies. Individual "Brits"don't force up property prices, corporate investors do.

People in Poland are very vindictive and bitter

Not everyone but many are especially the older generations but then they have been sold out so many times it is hardly a surprise.

marmite is awesome.

It is an acquired taste.

What people like depends on what food they are brought up on.

One mans Bigos is anothers Smelly shredded sock stew.

Arguing which is better is not really plausible.
Just like arguing which is better Barcelona FC or Manchester United, it depends what you have grown up with.

Having both English and French roots I have been brought up on differing cuisine so i really like most styles of cuisine, there are certain foods I dislike, offal, crustaceans, nuts (allergy), it doesn't matter in what style they are cooked, I just don't eat them.

Listen, half the world eats insects intentionally! I'm not talking about all the fruit flies, weevils an other creepy crawlies that we have eaten by accident.

manataka.org/page160.html

This is such a bourgeois thread. Here we all are in our heated homes, with clean running water, cars, TV's, cooking programs.... whilst the majority of the world is more concerned with when and where they are going to find their next meal.

Not that I'm not bourgeois c&nt myself.

Roll on the cheese platter open a Margaux... perhaps some Tapas..
