Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Texas has the right to leave the united states whenever it wishes, I doubt that US marines would ever fire upon their own in support of a federal government.

Alas, no it doesn't.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_v._White

The ruling is still in effect - states do not have the right of secession.

But some of my neighbor's do walk up and down the lane outside my house with a rifle slung over their shoulder.

Indeed, it's nothing out of the ordinary or strange in Poland.

Worth pointing out that if you really do need a gun for self-defence purposes, then you can get one.

News / British schoolboys very sensibly dealt with by the Poland's authorities after theft in Auschwitz [45]

Whoever daddy is - money wont help here, and the families are obviously stupid to go back on the acceptance of a caution and fine.

Yes, it looks like they've been given pretty terrible advice. The only thing I can think of is that someone in the UK media has threatened the family with publishing the judgement, and being forever known as "the boys that stole from Auschwitz" will do them no favours.

Quite what they hope to achieve by appalling against this is beyond me.

Off-Topic / To ALL IMMIGRANTS ("expats") to Poland on this forum... [124]

Once we found out that he was an ex pat from Turkey his tone changed.

You need to understand that this forum is operated for the sole reason to push the Turkish Agenda onto Europeans. When you understand this, we can get along just fine.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

When did PiS run on such a platform?

Are you trying to seriously suggest that PiS didn't make a huge deal out of demanding lustration and the removal of ex-PZPR men from public life?

You are talking about rule of law as if there were not rule of law in Poland. You are repeating some PO propaganda like an automaton without mind of his own.

There's the rule of Kaczyński, yes. But given that PiS have completely chosen to ignore the rulings of the Constitutional Tribunal, there is no rule of law.

Nah they championed transparencyin public life you i....! - meaning all people wanted to step out onto the policies scene should be screened and clear about their past and their past associations.

So... why have they appointed an ex-PZPR public prosecutor who is known to have persecuted a dissident?

Mainly it is about the secret commie police or being a snitch for the commie regime.

So one would assume that prosecutors in those times who actively took part in the prosecution of the opposition should be excluded from public life, as should former high ranking members of the Milicja.

Ironside, try as you might, you can't get away from the fact that PiS are very much PZPR-bis.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

It's nothing to do with me. I'm not PiS, I didn't claim to be "anti-communist" and I didn't claim to stand for any sort of moral revolution to get rid of communists.

PiS have appointed many ex-communists to prominent positions. Fact.

PO have loaded their parliamnetary club wirth ex-commies and secret police stooges -- 30 (count them!).

It's not about PO, Polonius. The more you try and deflect from the reality (that many prominent ex-communists such as ex-PZPR prosecutors and ex-PZPR MO officers are now in top positions as appointed by PiS), the more you'll be reminded of it.

PiS claimed to be anti-communist. They lied.

I'm still wondering why you're trying to compare PO to PiS when the factual matter is that PiS have loaded top positions with ex-PZPR members.

MORE THAN THE 30 IN THE PO PARLIAMENTARY CLUB?

We're not talking about PO, we're talking about "anti-communist" PiS openly appointing endless ex-PZPR members to top jobs.

When PO came to power they started by purging public broadcasting of non-PO people and putting their party cronies in their place.

Are you suggesting that PiS intend to indulge in widespread cronyism?

Still, the good thing is that these laws can be used to thoroughly remove PiS from all aspects of public life in less than 4 years time.

PO and others never claimed to be anti-communist. I'm merely pointing out the utter hypocrisy of a party claiming to be anti-communist going around appointing endless ex-PZPR comrades to top jobs.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

And if anyone needed confirmation of how PiS intend to run things, the new law surrounding the civil service has been passed.

thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/234913,Senior-civil-servants-to-be-appointed

"This bill will, in my opinion, entirely eliminate the social pathology which we have had to deal with in the years 2007-2015.

"It will be possible to immediately fire any person for whom the fact or even the suspicion of them having been involved in this pathology is confirmed," argued Beata Kempa, PiS MP and head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery.

People getting fired on "suspicions" reminds one entirely of the behaviour of the PZPR. We can expect 4 years of stagnation, as PiS appoint endless ex-PZPR comrades to top positions.

You realise of course that even in the most democratic of countries special services take an interest in those who level accusations or threats at the head of state or are especially obsessive or abusive.

Could be fun : I imagine the harassment and expulsion of an EU citizen would certainly attract considerable attention in Brussels and would lead to possible sanctions against the government.

So I take it you are going to take up my challenge to you and confront him yourself with your allegations.

I'm surprised that such an expert as yourself fails to understand that Poland has the incredibly flawed concept of immunity for politicians.

Still, I'm sure plenty of people will ask him questions after he's released from prison in many years time.

I'll pass you the details of the Warsaw distributor. Have you got an e-mail address I can contact you on? The Warsaw distributor goes through a considerable amount of stock on a weekly basis, so I'm sure you'll be in safe hands with him.

Most unlike the PISed-up to get caught lying, isn't it.

Quite humiliating, really. It's pretty clear that Slovakia isn't going to tolerate any attack on their institutions. In the current climate, it seems impossible to see how Warsaw can host a NATO summit if Warsaw is too busy doing things behind the backs of others.

Of course, this whole thing pushes Poland more into the Russian sphere of influence.

Well, well, well. If all the recent actions weren't enough, we have a very interesting letter from Slovakia to Poland.

wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,114871,19408849,ostry-list-slowackiego-mon-do-macierewicza-nikt-z-nami-nie.html?lokale=warszawa#BoxNewsImg

The Slovak Minister of Defence, Martin Gavle, has sent a letter to the Polish Minister of Defence, Antoni Macierewicz, confirming that Slovakia was not consulted before the invasion of the NATO counterintelligence centre. The same letter has been sent to Slovakia's government and to the Supreme Headquarters of NATO. Gavle also confirms that the institution was not part of the Polish Minstry of Defence, but an international institution. It's also pointed out that

In short : Macierewicz was telling lies, and now PiS have managed to create conflict with a regional partner.

Full letter (in Polish) is here - wiadomosci.radiozet.pl/Wiadomosci/Kraj/Ostry-list-ministra-obrony-Slowacji-do-Macierewicza-00016607

Work / Discrimination at work in Poland - teaching experience from the UK not taken into account? [7]

Your qualifications might be recognised at ministry level but not many headteachers will employ you.

That's a whole different kettle of fish though - I would be reluctant to hire someone who didn't have any knowledge or experience of the Polish system, too. A lot of things are really different, not just the methods of teaching. Some "best practices" here would be deeply frowned upon by UK-qualified teachers, for instance.

She should have got it in writing and then kicked up an almighty fuss. But I suspect that he/she might have been alluding to the "work path" rather than the actual teaching qualification. Once she finishes the probationary year, she would have the "contract" title and no-one would question her. I've gone through it myself, so I know there's no barrier - the only issue is that the documentation at higher levels can be a problem if it's only in English.

She was also told to improve her Polish as it is needed to communicate with the headteacher and staff- most who speak only Polish.

This much is absolutely true, but it's the same everywhere. Germany won't touch you without at least B2 German, for instance.

Hence why they've elected a party that's very much willing to show them the boot to the face in the middle of the night.

Poles always say that it's the Russians that like to be oppressed, but I have the feeling that the Poles aren't so different.

Romanians done soothing which Poland haven't been able to do to this day.

Blimey, Ironside, you couldn't be more wrong. Romania did nothing of the sort. A lot of property went into private hands mysteriously as well.

Life / All Things Christmassy in Poland [281]

You're not the only one. A friend that owns a mid-sized language school in Poznań that deals with corporate clients (mostly) told me that this year, he's pretty much not going to make any profit for the year because he's got the decency to make sure that his teachers at least get minimum wage for December/January, even though it's almost certain that they won't actually earn it as most classes will be cancelled throughout December and January.

Thanks Polo, I'd forgotten that it was a holiday. Means that I'll only work 7 days in January, which is fine by me.

But the groups are here and getting some followers.

They are indeed, and they're trying very heavily to convert people. Someone from one of those groups even called me a while ago to invite me to their service, which was unbelievably creepy. I seem to recall that there's also at least two African groups on the go in Ponzań, including the rather infamous incident where some African dude was infuriating his neighbours and then crying about racism when they phoned the police on him repeatedly.

Law / Which is the best city in Poland to open a kebab shop? [56]

No, they don't. This is just your wishful thinking again.

Given that Harry has lived in Poland for a very long time and you have...never, I suspect he knows more about what works in Poland than you do.

Kebab stores close almost everyday, everywhere, for lack of customers.

More and more open up everywhere, too. Every shopping centre has an outlet selling kebabs, Turkish food is growing in popularity, etc etc.

Even with you and Jon here trying to proselytize and convert people, Poland have only few hundred practicing muslims like you both.

You can't stop the Turkish Agenda.

Work / Discrimination at work in Poland - teaching experience from the UK not taken into account? [7]

In the UK the schools are free to recognise years of work at foreign schools.

However, the reality is that the majority of headteachers will recognise nothing but experience gained directly with the curriculum. Ania the diploma teacher from Poland is not going to get paid at the same level as Sarah even if they have identical experience, for instance.

It's good she has Polish teacher qualifications, because UK qualifications are not recognised in Poland.

Untrue. Poland recognises anyone qualified in the UK as being qualified in Poland without fuss.

English teachers in Italy took the Italian govt through the courts for 25 years and failed ...

Were they genuinely equal?

It's quite common for UK-qualified teachers to be underqualified by European standards, particularly in Bavaria and Finland.

Work / Discrimination at work in Poland - teaching experience from the UK not taken into account? [7]

Yes, it's normal. If she wanted to get on the MEN work path, she should have completed it in the UK, for instance working at a Saturday school which was MEN approved.

For what it's worth, the UK doesn't recognise foreign experience in many cases, as it's entirely dependent on the decision of the headteacher. There's no possibility for the UK Education Ministry to say "actually, you're at M5" - the headteacher decides whether or not such a candidate gets it.

Still, this is why we seek deeper integration, so that we remove such barriers. But it's also worth bearing in mind that in Poland, the school director could offer her a higher salary if he wanted...
