While speaking about Ireland.... this showed up on my youtube feed and it's interesting, suggesting that economic figures regarding the Irish economy have little to do with reality (Leprechaun economics) and that the country is generally not so well run in that it is bad at things like building infrastructure, managing healthcare and the housing market which is a giant, overpriced mess

Dublin's always been kind of dangerous IINM. Some years ago an Irish colleague went home (to Dublin) and got assaulted for his trouble (randomly beat up on the street at night with no real motivation besides him being in the wrong place at the wrong time). It seemed pretty normal to him....

This same colleague was impressed with the cleanliness of McDonald's in Poland (he claimed that in Dublin people would just throw the trash on the floor and not use the trash cans).

He also claimed at that time that Ireland was still extremely conservative in social and religious terms... one of the first things his sister said when she came to visit was along the lines of "If these Polish girls are catholic then why are their skirts so short?"

This was years before the big Polish migration to Ireland of course....

Before the pandemic there were between 1 and 2 million (estimates varied more informed estimates were closer to the 2 million mark).

One telling sign is that the refugee help office (which I passed on the way to work) has been closed for many months now...

A lot of employees in my local Biedronka are Ukrainian (on a handlowa sunday all the employees working are liable to be) so they're mostly working rather than sitting around drawing welfare... (not enough to live on in Poland).

There's also the difference effect --- you don't notice the 50 people speaking Polish you pass on the sidewalk but the couple speaking Ukrainian/russian* stand out and are noticed so it seems like there are more of them.

*I've read that most of the refugees still in Poland are from the East and largely here because they can't go back into russian infested areas or where there's active fighting... but once the invasion stalled those in relatively safe areas started heading back.

He's anti illegal migrants who broke the law by entering the EU.... in that he's more in line with popular attitudes of your everday French or German voter than any of the mainline parties in those countries...

And there is a fair amount of legal migrants who learn Hungarian and integrate reasonably well that I've never heard him speak against....

What makes him despicable is his oligarchic kleptocracy and destruction of education.... he clearly wants/needs a dumbed down public and has basically gone to war against teachers at every level of the system and schools are on the verge of collapse without enough teachers...

And I'm not talking about radical lib teachers but mainline normal people who just want to be paid normally for teaching Hungarian children, teens and young adults....

While teachers are actually paid less than retirees the state is still buying up enterprises the profits of which go to Orban's cronies...

He and his cronies have also bought up almost all media and have rigged the electoral system where he only needs about 30% of the vote to stay in power....

And he's maneuvering Hungary back into its cold war status as a russian satellite (probably hoping that membership in NATO will keep him safe from closer russian.... attention).

I'll add that the Gerogians (if that's who they are) in 'Georgian bakeries' are not much darker than Poles though the facial features tend in different directions

Also some other caucasian(?) types have been coming to Poland in recent years. A year or so ago in my neighborhood there was a group working in construction (actually demolishing old buildings) with darker skin, black hair and they spoke a language with each other that I didn't recognize (not slavic or turkic for sure) I think they may have been dagestani or something like that....

Trying to reserve places with towels aside.... if I had a choice between a hotel that mainly caters to middle-aged Germans or mainly caters to middle-aged Brits.... I'd go for the German one.... generally quieter and better dressed (and the food will be better since Germans are a bit more demanding in that department).

Indigenous just means they were established in the area before the political lines were established....

In the US people who date their existence in a place before that place became part of the US are 'indigenous'.... (there are other definitions but that one's good enough for present purposes).

In the US American Indians, Hawaiians, some Inuit/Aleut peoples and some people of Spanish (mostly in the SW) and French (mostly in the NE) can be regarded as indigenous.

In other words the people didn't go to the country the country came to them (whether they liked it or not).

Different rules for them and for immigrants who freely choose to come to an established political entity.
