USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

Some people suffer from an identity crisis. A small minority here in the States, but unfortunately they show up here on this forum from time to time.

A fair assessment.

Not many people know about the British diaspora, people who are the last remnant of the empire, who consider themselves British, but have never really lived there and wouldn't like it much if they did. And each one considers themself a British patriot, drinking tea with milk and reading week old copies of the Daily Mail. East Africa and the Middle Eastern 'gulf states' have plenty of such people, with much the same identity crisis.

Love / English Men vs Polish Men [207]

Many schools, with many teachers, with a high turnover of natives from both English and the colonies (sorry, Commonwealth.) In all that time, all those years, I've only met one female teacher (from England) who has run the gauntlet, married a Polish man and settled here. The other women run, run as fast as their flat-soled shoes can carry them.

Me too - maybe it's the same English lady, in which case she's very assimilated and been here for years, and now has a Polish citizen for a son. All the rest indeed run.

I knew of an American lady teacher here who was thoroughly dispirited by Polish men, usually for hitting on her and not mentioning that they're married, or taking her to dinner, paying for it, then asking for her share outside the restaurant, and in one case taking her to meet the family and asking her not to mention that she's part Indian.

Genealogy / Popular Polish First Names? [152]

I used to teach English in Poland, and if at the end of a long, hard day I needed to nominate students to speak, but was too tired to remember all their names, I'd just say Agnieszka and someone would answer. Worked every time.

Also, I just counted 17 Tomeks and 9 Andrzejs in the contact list in my cellphone

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

Pork pies! I brought some to Poland this week - people always like them here.

Also pot-roasted shoulder of lamb always goes down well.

History / Vilamovian language - now that's something interesting [24]

Check out the SEARCH function - there have been three of four threads on wymysorys, one of them very recently.

One interesting thing is that it's supposed to be mutually intelligible with NE Scots dialects.

Law / Are banks from Poland safe? [42]

the most safer investment is gold and silver coins

In a lot of countries, it's quite normal to buy little ingots, for that very reason.

News / SHOULD POLAND HAVE NUKES?? [154]

Except Derek, that the government and people of Poland have shown no interest whatsoever in nuclear weapons, and plenty of interest in healthcare reform.

They don't even want nuclear power, and quite a few were against the missile shield for whatever reason.

News / SHOULD POLAND HAVE NUKES?? [154]

I'd say the only nation you'd have to worry about is Pakistan.

Even then, it's questionable whether the bombs in Pakistan are actually Pakistan's bombs. They were paid for by a large oil-rich country who isn't allowed to keep their own.

News / SHOULD POLAND HAVE NUKES?? [154]

Think of it, soem ahckers could later disarm nukes by sitting infront of an laptop miles away...

Or much worse, launch them.

who will be the lucky one

Hopefully the one born from democracy, however given that Poland shares a border with Russia, I can't see her ever getting nukes.

News / SHOULD POLAND HAVE NUKES?? [154]

Though Poland has never shown any interest in having them and opposition within the country would be widespread. Besides, they are committed to nuclear non-proliferation.

History / Prophesy - Poland from sea to sea. [57]

If you're sceptical about prophecy, check out Agnieszka Pilchowa. Some of her prophecies, thankfully recorded by observers at the time, are precise and detailed and came true.

What are you talking about? Are you saying that the Japanese-American war will complete the Polish-German war? This is absurd. Pilchowa did not answer, and kept on talking: I do not understand what it is. I see something terrible. It is a giant mushroom, made of clouds, which is growing in the skies. Where is it? What is it? Then she opened her eyes widely and said that it was impossible: It will result in the death of the planet, she added

America today is the land of MTV, HIP HOP, DRUGS, DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS, CROOKED POLITICIANS, and FAT PEOPLE,and ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Remove the drive-by shootings and illegal aliens, add skinheads and chronic alcohol abuse and you've got modern Poland in a nutshell.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

I think it would be more interesting to hear your explanation.

Well... You're he one defending the extreme position of the guy the thread's about.

It used to be universities, libraries, governements, the military, history teachers, people who are interested in history in general.

Irving's books?

You think "racists" or "nazis" buy 50 dollar books that are 800-900 pages thick?

Someone musy buy them - though Irving's books don't quite fit that profile.

I know a lot of things, jonni!

And most of them either distasteful, imaginary, or both.

Why give one medals and the other a prison sentence?

Because one of them was a holocaust survivor who dedicated his life to righting wrong; and the other a self-publicist and demagogue with exxtreme views who makes his money as an apologist for the Third Reich.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

Are we talking about islam now, jonni?

Another weird comment - have you finished the treatment by the way?

So, what's with the double standards?

Tell us then.

David Irving has some shortcomings too, but his are not accepted.

Not accepted by whom?

No nazis/racists care about David Irving, he is too complicated and sophisticated for them. He writes books that are 500+ pages.

And who buys them? And how would you know what "nazis/racists care about"?
We're all ears.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

Now, should we trust Simon Wiesenthal after all these lies have been exposed?

"Have trusted" would be more appropriate, since the gentleman died a few years ago, but for holocaust deniers, accuracy seems less important than the ideology of hate.

Shortcomings or not, Dr Wiesenthal managed to bring some of the twentieth century's most despicable individuals to justice. Mr Irving (who is NOT a historian, by the way) just seeks to profit from upsetting holocaust survivors and their families, while at the same time enjoying the attention he gets from racist groups.

News / Chechen Congress in Poland, Russia frowns [90]

Very little really, and a dodgy film to boot. Though if Poland were to decide which nationality could visit on the grounds of things that people have done in their name, the airport would be pretty quiet. No Germans since WW2, no Americans since Vietnam, no Belgians since the colonial era and no French since the 1950s.

News / Chechen Congress in Poland, Russia frowns [90]

This is why

Your film doesn't say much about Poland.

I hope the Russians take the gloves off and bomb these barbarians back to 5th century where they belong.

They've been shelling, gassing, rounding up and shooting the men, women and children of Chechenya for hundreds of years and haven't broken them. The Russians should call it a day before their co-religionists step in and teach the Russians a lesson once and for all.

Chechen are after their independence and nothing more, they are fighting oppressing power

Yes. There are only about a million left, after being systematically terrorised for centuries by the Russians.
