If only I could collate all the stuff in here that actually makes sense, the next time my flatmate asks for his 'kurwa dictionary', I'd have somthing much more appropriate to hand over. Yes the K-word drops in on many of his English sentences.

Any good ways of saying 'Please stop swearing!'?
(Especially if there's a handy place to drop the K-word in!)

Is ocipieś the correct way to do the present tense?
And (cue dramatic music) can you tell me the future?

the cat thought and he died'

"kot myślał i zdechł"

'Curiosity killed the cat.' might be a better way of translating this one.
Or would it? A cat being too curious might lead to its untimely spending of all 9 lives,
but just thinking?

I'd better start giving cats riddles to solve. (Or will this only work in Poland?)

edit: No cats have been harmed.

What about ocipiałeś? Is this an equivalent kind of word?

spot on

My flatmate is currently listening to disco polo.
I might have to give this word a little bit of exercise in a few minutes.

ochujalas

Is that past tense, second person, male? edit: or would that be -eś?
I always look forward to using some new (and unexpected) swear-words.

to ass

That looks more like a word-for-word translation.
To ass looks like something more than a little ruder.

edit:
Notice how I'm at the top of pages 20, 21 and 22.
I'm not obsessed by swearing, honest. ******* ****!

Life / Which nations do Poles like the most / the least? [150]

Okay so let's begin a PF list of favourite countries

Chile - never been there, but I like it because it's so long and has Monkey Puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana)
Svalbard (or is it Spitzbergen?) - it's not a nation state, but so what, this is my list. How northerly can you get?
Mali - okay, so I probably wouldn't like it - too hot for starters, but I like Ali Farka Toure, Amadou & Mariam, other Malian music, so why not?

Wales - I've had so many holidays there, I must like it.
Poland - I'd be in trouble for not mentioning it.
England - ditto.

Why shouldnt it be popular?

I am thinking of those who get a series of bad jobs, go home disillusioned, tell their friends and families how bad it can be, then get asked what countries they like in a survey. The ones who get the best deal out of the UK are still here, earning money and enjoying themselves and not being asked silly questions in Poland (people might be asking them silly questions here instead).

its the only thing you've won this last 41 yrs then?...

There was some rugby thing a couple of years ago. Not that I give a monkey's...

Anyway, it's not as if the UK is genuinely popular with Poles, I wouldn't have thought.

England.... we win

Looks more like the Republic of Ireland won.

France... didn't they limit the number of Polish workers entering France when the UK and Ireland didn't?
Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

And most of those of irish origin!

Most of them probably.

You're also caunting poles that came to the UK recently ;)

Probably some of those too.

Catholicism is gaining ground in the UK whereas other denominationsd are actually falling, so it's not just Irish, Polish and so on.

I wish I had a list like that so I could know who I like.

Where is Vatican ?

It is possible that the statistics came from a multiple-choice list which didn't include the Vatican City.

Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

Well done, Sherlock.

hw are we supposed to know we are not mind readers

Either:
By not having been able to read anyone's mind.

Or:
Ever heard of puntuation?

"I want some beer."
"Okay, let's go to the off-licence."

... later...

"Okay, here are my 10 bottles of beer. What are you getting?"
"I'm not drinking anything."

The sentences in bold were spoken by a Polish man.
One of those sentences was a lie.
Guess which one.

Every country has its share of stupid people. It's just that some are louder than others.

Right now they propose "socially marginalized"

A vague term that actually sounds more offensive.
"What do you call yourself?"
"Black."
Then that is the term to use.
If anyone calls categorises themself as "socially marginalised" I think they'd better see a specialist about their inferiority complex.

We all have race, so anyone from any race can be racist.
But where has that ever got the world?

It's not just about 'invention' - it is also about selling it. Some places are better for this than others.

As far as I know the Americans can claim the microwave oven as one of their own inentions.
I like the Polish invention of the rubbery bits on windscreen wipers. (There I go trusting information from the internet again).

Telephone

Alexander Graham Bell was Scottish. I think he spent much of his life in Canada.
He once complained about the continual, irritating ringing of his telephone.

Tom Cruise

They can keep him.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

In the US, people can say that I am from Europe, buy they have trouble to say from which country...It's usually said from Germany or Russia

You can invent new countries that don't really exist, then tell them that's where you're from.

Some Poles do stand out as Poles before they even say anything, but mistakes can easily be made.

Food / Polish Sour Milk / Maślanka [44]

I had thought about making cheese at home this year but it didn't happen. I'm not sure how to get hold of unpasteurised milk and I didn't have enough cardoon flowers (rennet substitute, traditionally used for cheese-making in some Mediterranean parts). So maybe next year.

I don't so much like the sound of just leaving some milk to go off. Maybe you need untreated milk and the right stuff floating around in the atmosphere. There is some Belgian beer I have heard of that is made with natural yeasts from the atmosphere rather than cultured strains used in nearly all brewing. Looks like I have some work to do.

biology lab

Doesn't make it sound appetising.

History / What do Poles think about Turks? [761]

I've met some nice ones and some not-so-nice ones.
There is a very good Turkish restaurant I go to occasionally, as well as a few dodgy kebab shops.
Of course, it's not all about food, but...
