History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

Grzegorz,So your going to tell me that someone who is not from the same country has the same understanding of that country and grasps every aspect as well as someone who lives there? If that's the case then there's no point in discussing that one with you.I side with what I agree with I don't pay attention to how someone uses there belief.Just because I'm a moderator doesn't mean I can't agree or disagree with someone.I am a member as well and have the right,as you do to give my opinion thank you..Just because I may agree with some doesn't mean that I'll excuse foolish behavior.

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

Harry,I agree, even up in the north, the people that are termed "redneck" are likely to listen to those types of music. The term did originally spring from the south. How long has the term Burak been around,do you know?

Jon357, as far as right wing and religious fundamentalism goes that is not a requirement,as for the rest of it you are very close.

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

Polonius I hear you,I myself don't refer to anyone in any of these terms, but I guess some are more acceptable than others. If some one refers to me as a city slicker, this never bothered me.Is the term Burak acceptable in Poland?

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

I'm not sure what you mean by underclass and I'm only explaining how the term has evolved form what it originally meant. As for in Poland I don't know how they apply their equivalent term at all. When I was growing up the term referred to racists.I believe redneck based on Foxworthy's description is closer to "hick" or "Hillbillie".Usually living in the remote areas. You have familiar traits with people who live in the more remote places regardless of geographic location.

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

I guess Jeff Foxworthy has contributed to that. And I would say that the some of the newer generation may think of redneck in this way.Whether you go by the old or new meaning, rednecks are in all parts of the U.S.

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

Polonius, where did you get this idea that having a southern accent means that you are a redneck?Being a redneck is what makes you a redneck and we have them with northern accents as well.Jeff Foxworthy has somewhat changed the meaning of it.The common thread with rednecks use to be racism.Foxworthy's interpretation is closer to 'hick" or "hillbillie".It use to be that being called a redneck was not a term of endearment to say the least.

Polonius, that was a good answer,I agree that no one should be meddling in the political affairs of a country that they are not a citizen of,but such is human nature.

But if they are citizens then they're not foreigners and therefore have the right to their say. This is why I'm asking what he means by aliens.

Peter_H,I absolutely agree with you on that,I am from the U.S. and I want to learn about Poland, but I know I'll never get a true understanding unless I go to Poland.

Life / Polish authors, books & literature. [95]

Ironside, have you read a book called the Alienist by Caleb Carr;I thought it was fantastic.Alienist was the term for a psychiatrist in the latter half of the1800s until the early 1900s not sure exactly when they changed it to psychiatrist. The story takes place in about 1880.when Theodore Roosevelt was the Police Commissioner of New York city during the Boss Tweed era. It's about a serial killer who is sought after by an Alienist who was commissioned by Roosevelt to try and capture him.It is fictional, but a very good read and not chewy.

Can someone suggest a good book by a Polish author that has a pretty good English version, with a limited loss to translation?Preferably fiction.

Travel / Poland wildlife and similar wild life where you live. [243]

Merged: Wildlife in Poland and the best places to witness them other than the zoo?

I was curios if Poland has any wildlife to speak of and in what regions would they be most populous. Is Poland teeming with wildlife?Does Poland have animals that are indigenous to there?

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1400]

Pawian, are you serious you've actually tried to do this?Pawian;I wouldn't recommend doing this in Poland unless it's during the very early spring, other wise you could very well kill yourself. They do this in the summer in Alaska, but the ground has permafrost which is a 4 ft thick layer of frozen ground year round. This keeps the fish from fermenting to a lethal dose.Because it is in the summer the air that gets in is just warm enough to begin the fermentation. The Alaska Natives have always eaten it.If you or I tried it,we would more than likely get sick the first time, but not deadly sick and then after that our system could handle it.My brother said he got sick the first time he ate it.Now he loves it.
