News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Changing the abortion laws was a massive own goal for PiS alienating most women and a large majority of the young.

The old laws were unpopular but people had found a way to live with them, changing them was just.... dumb.

It wasn't necessary and they did it....

Hostile new media centres and stations popping up like mad after TVP get's shut down

Welcome to the 21st century.... younger people (under 25 or so) do not watch tv and PiS has not captive internet audience....

It will be interesting to see if reżimowa continues it's hardline PiS pushing...

Thanks for ruining Poland? -.-

Calm down. There was an election PiS had the most votes but not enough. It's not the end of the world. Why are so many PiS supporters so paranoid?

If PiS hadn't spent 8 years treating everyone who didn't support them 100% like a mortal enemy and traitor maybe they'd have better results.

. I think the high turnout might benefit PiS in the suburbs

High turnout hasn't traditionally helped them, I'm seeing increases in voting numbers in the west...

According to the foreign press

Then the foreign press is wrong, that's hardly been mentioned in the campaign (and only by one party).

half of the queue was between 20 and 40 years old. Amasing!

Not great for the ruling party....

A friend who refused the referendum ballot received a ballot for the sejm or senat without a stamp (which would have made it invalid) other similar reports were brought up in a press conference of the electoral commission....

Travel / Krakow during Easter - good or bad idea? [19]

Very much interested in the maritime area

The maritime part is more in Gdynia (Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia are like one city, and called Trójmiasto - Tri-city in Polish). A quick way to get around north south is by train. Hard to explain but you should get the hang of it very quickly.

Travel / Krakow during Easter - good or bad idea? [19]

in Wrocław just prior to Krakow

Personally I tend to prefer Wrocław (a very unique city) though the interesting part is relatively small.

I hated Krakow the first time I visited (in the 80s... communist*) but later spent some pleasant times there, including long train layovers (12 or more hours) that flew by very quickly.

Krakow is definitely more tourist friendly and you should have a good time there.

*the main exception was a guy singing American blues songs for tips in an underground passageway. I tried to talk to him between songs but he didn't really know English he'd learned the lyrics phonetically (really well I have to say better than most professional singers). I gave him a dollar (substantial change in those days).

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [503]

famous Russian themed Rasputin song

rah rah rasputin, lover of the russian queen...

years ago I read a russian journal (an American woman spent about a year in Moscow and Leningrad with her grad student husband in the late 70s) this was a time where that kind of stay was almost impossible for Americans.

She reported that Rasputin by Boney M, although officially frowned upon or even officially banned was hugely popular.

Also years ago while a student at university (mid-late 80s) I attended a party hosted by an American who'd spent a couple of years in Germany.... found a Boney M greatest hits records in his collection and convinced him to play some of it... the other people at the party were very.... confused (Boney M was all but completely unknown there).

fun times...

News / Poland says no to flood of Immigrants [670]

Israel was 9 miles wide. Arabs saw it and went for the throat. Man, were they wrong!

Are you falling out of step with the other russian shills? russian state media (and their shill army) has firmly pro-Hamas anti-Israel at present... how long before novi sees the light and adopts the correct party position?

In case Palestinians end up in a western European country.... Denmark's done that already and so you have a good idea of what to expect

short answer: nothing very good, 60 % or so will be involved in crime as will about a third of their children (amidst other bad results)

just as long u recognise the elections were fair and free

Only after the fact if that's what they are..... living in Australia you have no idea of day to day realities with PiS (diffrent philosophy but more and more like the PRL in terms of governing style).

Notice that the new law trying to disqualify votes from Poles in European countries (the only reason it was passed).

News / Poland says no to flood of Immigrants [670]

why is it the case?

The whole "Palestinian" sub-group of Arabs is highly artificial... it's a combination of locals who have roots in the area before 1947 and newer arrivals attracted by employment opportunities created by Israel (IIRC Yassir Arafat was actually from Egypt). The different factions don't get along by themselves and are only united by hatred of Israel.

It's also divided in terms of religion (the Christian element used to be more prominent, I remember when Hanan Ashrawi was one of the most articulate voices of Palestine) but they've been pushed out by the Islamic revival that started in the 1990s.

Within the group "Palestinians" you have some of the more educated Arabs (working in other countries and office environements that locals often coulnd't do0 and some of the least educated and least adapted to the modern world.

Other Arabs look on them as losers (vis a vis Israel) and a threat in terms of some of them being better educated and understanding concepts like political opposition that most Arab countries don't get.

There's also the land question... Islam (more than other religions) claims land and the idea is that once a place is muslim majority it 'belongs' to the islamic world... they're still not over Spain and Israel is a very fresh wound that dishonors (in muslim minds) the entire muslim world.

There's more, but that will do for starters.

their Arab brethren

Palestinians are widely loathed in the arab world. They're useful as pawns and distractions but no Arab country actually wants any and treats them like crap if they live there.

I thought everybody knew that?

I've known that for about 30 years....

News / Hołownia - a rising star in Polish politics? [94]

beautiful dream which is going to turn into reality! Ha! The opposition takes power

I'm a bit more.... sober. I'm assuming that PiS will win but hopefully not by enough to be able to form a government (who besides Konfederacja wants to work with them?)

The question is how many more will vote for them than polls indicate. We know about 10 % or more of those who vote for PiS are covert voters - they're too embarrassed to admit it publicly so you need to add 10% of anything they're polling (at least)

One poll said they're at about 31 so I assume it will be closer to 35 %....

What are other polls saying?

PiS certainly seems to support it (as long as they pay them enough cash first)

PiS voters, on the whole, have less education than KO voters and have less experience of other cultures. Why this well-established fact should be controversial and cause you to be rude to me is not clear.

Low information =/= stupid, stop projecting.

It's possible to disagree with someone politically and still be civil. It's not necessary to be a total jerk to those you disagree with.
