News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [870]

The opposition PiS party organised a conference. Its main pointis that the Polish report is full of lies and falsifications.

The lies are to diminish the responsibility of present government`s mistakes and failures. Especially, the Interior Minester should have sent his men to check the Smolensk airport which wasn`t done. And Foreign Minister should have insisted on the presence of Russian flight leader on board the Polish plane.

the flight attendants even get a ticking off, hardly fair, if passengers don't fasten the seatbelt it's their own fault.

Why unfair? She reported sth that wasn`t true. It is against the rules, isn`t it?

The conclusions:

Russians made serious mistakes which could be of certain importance.

Polish mistakes were crushing, though, and directly contributed to the accident.

3.2.1. Cause of Accident
The immediate cause of the accident was the descent below the minimum descent altitude at an excessive rate of descent in weather conditions which prevented visual contact with the ground, as well as a delayed execution of the go-around procedure. Those circumstances led to an impact on a terrain obstacle resulting in separation of a part of the left wing with aileron and consequently to the loss of aircraft control and eventual ground impact.

3.2.2. Circumstances Contributing to the Accident
1) Failure to monitor altitude by means of a pressure altimeter during a non-precision approach;
2) failure by the crew to respond to the PULL UP warning generated by the TAWS;
3) attempt to execute the go-around maneuver under the control of ABSU (automatic go-around);

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

I dont agree with that at all. Its not fair that people who were born into wealth should be able to afford things which somebody more unlucky cannot.

Oops, it reminds me of communist ideology. Lenin and his comrades professed similar ideas.

most will trade 50 years of their working lives for a paid off mortgage and if theyre lucky a nice car and a holiday once a year.

The old communist slogan said:
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need

Of course, it is impossible. Such mad ideas finished off communism.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_each_according_to_his_ability,_to_each_according_to_his_need

I'm wondering, in how far the entrpuneurship can be taught to the kids.

You can teach a kid everything. But only those with a real talent will succeed.

Yes, why should a person who parent's are filthy rich inherit 20 million.

the free market is killing the US.

Opps, communism reloaded! :):):)

=isthatu2]Yes,same company, but Canada is a "cousin" and the jobs were in Derby, its not the same as government awarding the contract to a german firm based in germany with a rather foul history.

Aren`t we all Europeans?

Besides, we should think globally, not locally. When Germans get the contract and earn the money, they will be able to visit England on vacation and boy more English produce.

whats with all those strange burgundy trams with German adverts on - look like they have come from early 1990s Leipzig !

Of course, apart from newest production, Polish cities also use old trams, even 40 years old. More or less the ratio is 1 new for 3 old.

Monia - Warsaw type is build by polish company called Pesa - based in Bydgoszcz .

Yes, it is just great. Warsawians are patriots and choose Polish manufacturers. Krakowians are more cosmopolitan and our Bombardiers are from:

are you taking the proverbial Pawian? !!!!
Bombardier are the last remaning train manufacturors in the country that invented trains....

Not Britain but Canada. At least I guess so, or I am wrong and the Canadian company makes Bombardiers in England?

bombardier.com/en/corporate

Bombardier NGT6 cars are low-floor trams bought since 2000. There have been three deliveries so far: 12 cars in 2000, 14 cars in 2003 and 24 cars between 2007 and 2008. The trams have an electronic passenger information system.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramways_in_Krak%C3%B3w

BTW. a tram or bus ticket costs about 2.5 zlotys in Krakow. 1$.

So I am not surprised that they cost now that much . It was too crazy , IMO.

Exactly. Those prices were from the moon. :):):)

There is a new apartment complex next to the Hilton hotel, where the price per square meter was $ 10 000. Foreign investments make such prices skyrocket

Are you talking about Platinum Towers?

50 m2 apartment costs about 850.000 zlotys on average.

=Monia]It is the newest type .

Krakow`s modern trams are more beautiful than Warsaw`s. :):):):):)

And their name is - Bombardier! :):):):)

It is funny but most of those sky scrapers which surround that communist monster were meant to screen it and diminish in the skyline. But if you look at the picture, you will see it is still the highest.

Maybe next year, as Monia says, some new developments will surpass and shadow it. :):):):)

=Monia] beloved Warsaw,

Yes, Warsaw is a beautiful city.

But very expensive one. People there have the highest salaries in Poland, equal to European average, but prices of apartments or houses or rent are horrendous, too.

Oh wow, is that really the new skyline ? Thats some serious change in 5 years :)

:):):)
It is better to see the Warsaw skyline at night:

During the day it is a bit dull: Though for a comer from Eastern Poland countryside it must look like the West no matter day or night.

and neglected 19 century houses:

good luck. i hope you change water in the bath tub after your wife :)

That was a joke which might cause some misunderstanding. :):):):)

I suppose that most guys from US who know nothing about Poland still believe we, Poles, live in huts, do slave work in lords` fields and bring water from a nearby lake or river.

What is the reality? (all photos from Krakow)

Most people live in apartment blocks which were built in communist times. Only a few remained in their original ugly shape:

the majority has been insulated and repainted.

Blocks are usually grouped in estates, among abundant greenery

Modern blocks are much nicer:

Urban flats/apartments vary in size, some are very small, other quite big. People have hot and cold water, a seperate toilet, central heating from the city`s power station, gas heating for daily water. What else? Lifts/elevators in high rise buildings.

People who can afford high cost of land in cities can buy or build a house which looks like that:

Very few ot that kind:

Many of that kind, from the times when moronic communist authorities forced people to build the same square houses everywhere.

And more and more new houses of this type:

Ooops, I almost forgot. If you live in the city center, it is usually dense area, built up with houses. So, you can live in an old 19/20 century old house

or a modern filling

TBC with country houses.

Travel / What is the weather like in Poland where you are now? [211]

Ooops, instead of going to the seaside, we are staying at home and waiting for the lousy weather to stop. It seems the rain has set in for longer and we will have to wait till next week for improvement.

What is the weather like at the central seaside now, near Gdańsk etc?

You really should be made a Mod.

Never! :):):) I wouldn`t be able to pull so many legs.....which is my hobby. :):):):):)

You are ignoring me?

Excuse me, Sir.

Many forums are banning people without any reason.

This forum is banning for a reason very quickly and unbanning even more quickly. It is great.

For example, I wrote the word "monarchy" once or twice on serious British forums, bammm, it didn't take a day or two for them to ban..

Oops, was it the British Communist Party forum? :):):):)

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

Please, don`t feel mortified even if your family signed the German collaboration list. The war was a terrible experience, we are not able to grasp the intesity of its terror today. Some people just couldn`t withstand the pressure and joined, in order to save their family, for example. They were weak, true, but they weren`t traitors of Poland. Real traitors were different - the guys who actively cooperated with Nazi Germans or Soviets. But there were very few of them.

It is so Polish - tolerant, inconsistent, amusing.
Nobody is really serious here. Moderators set up rules and nobody follows them. When new rules about quote manner are introduced - foreigners join restive Poles and put up resistance together. In result, suspensions are distributed widely but everybody knows they are like a punishment for a naughty kid from doting parents- we have to punish you for your misdemeanor, but remember, we still love you.

Guys, stay this way because you are unique in the whole universe. :):):):):):):)

I would like to know what percentage of the Gorale population these 300 constituted.

I found a few links in Polish which claim that 150.000 Polish Highlands people were summoned by Germans to join the Goralenvolk idea and about 27.000 did. But it can be wrong.

At the time of the next census of population Poles will be able to determine to what nationality they belong. Among the 200 proposals the Central Statistical Office is the nationality of highlanders . Table will begin April 1 , will end on 30 czerwca.Klasyfikacja introduced by the CSO result of the new law on national minorities , and our presence in the EU. - The public will have the opportunity to declare their nationality , as well as that with which ethnic group they identify - says Wieslaw £agodziński , a spokesman for the CSO. At the time of the census enumerators will ask us two basic questions .

=Des Essientes]Also do you have a list of their surnames, and if so would you be so kind as to post it?

oops.... I am not a god, come on....

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

Yes, civil war is much crueller than outside war.

A hero of 1939 campaign who died an honorable death, leading his soldiers in the field. Though born and brought up in Russia, he was Polish by heart.

Mikołaj Bołtuć (born December 21, 1893 in Petersburg, killed in battle September 22, 1939 near £omianki) was a brigadier-general of the Polish Army, commanded the IV Polish infantry Division during World War II. he was the son of Ignacy Bołtuć, Russian General of Polish descent.

Gen. Boltuc's tomb, in a form of a field stone, is at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw.

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

more, please :)

Yes, I forgot to add a few photos of Goralenvolk which are still available on the Net:

Goralenvolk

One sentence worth considering:
He was tried for high treason, sentenced to death by hanging by his own brother, Julian Krzeptowski, a Home Army member, and executed.

Can you imagine it? A man sentencing his brother to death? The text about the demise of Waclaw Krzeptowski is not very accurate and needs clarification. Yes, the AK were after him - his brothers (a very large family of 14 brothers and sister) and relatives (close cousins) were in the AK and also couriers and guides over the Tatra mountains (they also used the same route in the 1950's + Cold war to smuggle people out), but he never betrayed them or even their whereabouts.

His brother Julian Krzeptowski held the 'trial' in the family home and Waclaw was hung from a beam in the house.
I am named after my granduncle 'Julian' the judge who after the war had a distinguished career as a lawyer and judge. Waclaw is not mentioned in family discussions to this day.

Yes, ideal situations are rare, but that was the protocol to be followed.

Yes.

Wacław Krzeptowski - a Highlander who collaborated with Nazi Germans. A tragic figure. Some historians claim that by betraying Poland he tried to save his Highland compatriots from Nazi repressions. Others contradict and perceive him as blatant traitor.

Palivec - The public sphere is "polluted" by graffity, but even more by adverts, all over Poland. To me it looks horrible to see all these ugly, cheap adverts everywhere.

There are cheap adverts, I agree

and more sophisticated ones:

Po polsku / O co chodzi z tymi Żydami. [144]

o stary - ty jakiś apokaliptyczny filosemita jesteś albo apokaliptyczny fatalista :P

Filosemitą jestem i się nie wstydzę. Jestem odtrutką polskiego społeczeństwa na zajadły antysemityzm. Sokrates + ja = neutralny stosunek do Żydów (statystycznie).

Natomiast fatalistą to chyba jesteś ty:

Jedyne normalne zdanie to to że PO zrobi koalicję z SLD.
