Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

=Foreigner4]why not just order her something no matter what she says since you know what's going to happen?

I have a better idea. Why don`t you order a meal with stuff that Polish people normally don`t eat, e.g., haggis, octopus, snails, raw oysters, calf brain, pig ears etc.

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [341]

=delphiandomine]do you know if the Soviet idea of making Poland the 16th Republic of the USSR was ever seriously considered?

No, it wasn`t. Stalin was said to say the following during the war: Installing communism in Poland is like trying to saddle a cow.

It means he was sceptical. Quite right. :):):):) The first brick that fell off the communist wall was Poland in 1989. The thread proves that no other country in the block caused so much anti-communist ferment as Poland.

=delphiandomine]Ah, that old Polish disease, the rantings about the imaginary Communists.

Come on, this Bberlin guy, who said it, isn`t another PiS supporter! :):):):)

=bberlin62] just don't forget to tell everyone how great it was in Poland when it was practically a Soviet republic.

Sigh.....

Oh dear, there are good days and bad days. Good days are when I converse with intelligent people who know and love history.

E.g.,

:):):):)

Bad days are when I confront guys like you. :)_:):):):0

But I will show you my class. Instead of abusing you, :):):):):):) I will tell you in simple words:
Poland wasn`t a Soviet republic, neither practically nor in theory. Just look through all the pages in this thread and hopefully, you will be able to understand what I mean.

My friend, praising the Soviets and their Red Army doesn`t make one a communist yet. :):):) There is still more to it.....

If things were so simple as you think, we would live much happier lives than we actually do..... :):):):)

=KingAthelstan]clearly the Soviet troops in your country were not Nazis

No, they weren`t, indeed.

=KingAthelstan]If Russia had not won the war on the Eastern Front then there would be no Poland today,

You are wrong. In 1945 Americans successfully used atomic bombs against Japan. Today, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are symbols of mass destruction.

If Soviets hadn`t conquered/"liberated" Eastern Europe in 1945, Berlin and Frankfurt would have shared annihiliated Japanese cities` fate, too.

Poland would have been liberated by Western allies. Today, what would Poland be like if there hadn`t been communism here for 45 years?

Isn`t it obvious? :):):):):)

History / Do you regard the Polish Communist Partizans as heroes? [36]

Do you regard the Polish Communist Partizans as heroes?

They organised a few serious military operations against German occupiers. Those who participated can be considered heroes. They fought for Poland, doesn`t matter they wanted communist Poland.

E.,g., on 10 May 1943 they blew up the Nur fur Deutsche cafe in Warsaw, killing 6 Germans. In another attack a few months later, the German death toll rose to 18.

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [341]

It was Poles who imprisoned Poles.

In late 1940s, Polish communist state developed its own secret police and yes, it was Poles who put other Poles behind bars for political reasons.

The fact is, is that the majority of Poles embraced communism after WWII.

Rubbish.

Whenever Russia wanted to put down a satellite they sent in the Poles (East Germany,1953, Hugary,1956 Czechoslovakia, 1968).

Complete rubbish.

The Poles were last to throw off communism, not first

Utter rubbish.

I am glad to be of help. Yes, I like this thread too. It is so....inspiring. :):):):):)

Check my other favourite historical threads:
Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ?

Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments

The restoration of Polish cities from WW2 destruction

there was never any armed uprising like in Prague or Hungary.

Knowing impulsive Polish character, can you imagine the carnage that would have taken place in Poland if the nation had rebelled like Hungarians?

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [341]

Another wonderful example of Polish objection to communism. I didn`t talk about it too much before.

Friday marks the 35th anniversary of the founding of Poland's Workers' Defense Committee (KOR), a precursor of Solidarity and a beacon for civil rights in 1970s

KOR was founded after a crackdown by the communist government in the summer of 1976. The announcement of a drastic increase in food prices prompted widespread unrest, leading to strikes and open rioting, above all in the south eastern city of Radom, but also in Plock and the Warsaw suburb of Ursus. Several thousand people were arrested, including many bystanders, with fines and prison sentences meted out in large numbers. Many were dismissed from work. A group of intellectuals set about trying to help the repressed and their families - focusing first on legal and financial imperatives.

On 23 September the Workers' Defense Committee was formally established.

1976

KOR meetings

Hunger strike 1979

One more fact not mentioned before:
Today marks the 30th anniversary of an appeal to the workers of Eastern Europe adopted by the 1st Congress of the Solidarity Union in Gdańsk.

The appeal was addressed to the workers in the whole Soviet bloc and expressed support for "all those who decided to embark on the difficult road of struggle for a free labour movement".

It is for us to decide, don`t you think? Abstaining from posting here on the basis of alleged false intentions of the poster or photographer is just ridiculous.

And now Des.

What do you mean by:

Polish photographer exposes nascent micro-mini-skirt fashion trend.

Can you elaborate?

=delphiandomine]American takes photographs of women on the street without their permission".

That`s not so bad, after all. We all do. :):):)

But many questions come to my mind: Was it taken in Poland? Which Polish photographer is meant? Do Polish women consider them trendy? Who designed them - a Pole? Who, the fack, should be credited with all that mess?

I don't know but he/she is surrounded by a herd of Shetland ponies so could be a zoophile.

I asked because since 2009 or so, whenever an elephant is mentioned, Poles try to find out its sexual preferences. That case was famous worldwide.

(Reuters) - A Polish politician has criticized his local zoo for acquiring a "gay" elephant named Ninio who prefers male companions and will probably not procreate, local media reported on Friday.

go figure - you ever heard of a man eater beaver who devoured a male dwarf pûrn star?

I can see you are in the mood for a fight.

I am not. I let the steam off on Telfcat in an abusive PM to him. :) What I can say is: I don`t really get what you want or expect and why. But if you don`t like it, why don`t you just get lost from this thread? :

Wow, I saw camels in people`s gardens, but an elephant is really curious.

Is he/she gay or hetero?

Now imagine a post like that without that picture attached:

=gumishu] like you can't imagine how it's done -

No, some people are deficient in imagination. This thread is for them too. Why do you want to limit their right to proper perception?

=gumishu]ou know what that is - a waste of server space

Rubbish in my case. I never use PF servers.

What`s wrong, gumishu? I thought you are really smart and you realise obvious things. :):):):) Was I mistaken?

Thank you, Wrocław. Yes, that is my intention, because I strongly believe in the saying: One photo is worth 1000 words.

Please, guys, try to find photos to illustrate your curiosities. They are really available on the Net. If you can`t, other members and I will try to lend a hand.

Life / Mishmash facts about Poland and Poles [182]

I invite you to contribute to a new thread. Tell us about things which you consider curious, interesting, amusing, unusual or unknown.

Let`s learn what real Poland is like!

One limitation though!!! Each poster who provides a new curiosity should include a photo/picture/image to illustrate what he/she is talking about.

Fact posts without an image will be mercilessly reported to admins and randomised.

Posts including pure commentary needn`t display any images.

I warned you.

Thank you for your attention, gentlemen and gentlewomen.

Did you know that you can win 50 million zlotys in the lottery tonight or the nearest future?

Today, the big draw for Lotto , where you can win is 50 million. The probability of hitting "six " is 1 to 13,983,816 , and yet not willing missing. Politicians also commented on the historical accumulation . - Imagine - Prime Minister fills the coupon and do not let God wins - only then would the system - said Donald Tusk. PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski , in turn, assured that if he won the Lotto , rozdałby win, because he could not be a millionaire.

Are you going to take part? But did you know that winning so much money can seriously damage your mental health in the long run?

oecd.org/dataoecd/60/51/48631419.pdf

Barany niedołuczone. Nie umiejom jasno napisać po angielsku. :):)

No cóż, jaka praca, taka płaca.

19 lekcji ( w podstawówkach i gimnazjach 20) razy 4 tygodnie w miesiącu to 76.

76 razy 8.5 miesiąca to według moich obliczeń - 646 lekcji w szkołach ponadgimnazjalnych w ciągu roku.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1090]

=FUZZYWICKETS]the majority of Poland's population right now grew up during communist times, and everyone over the age of about 44 has spent more years in communism than in a democratic society. how can you compare a country full of people like that to people in western europe?

I detect a slight derision here. It is unfair.

I prefer to live in Poland than in the West. Poles, though poorer and with communist mental burden, are still better people than Westerners. Less morally corrupt, more traditional, keeping good old values. Although I am pissed off many times by my compatriots, I can`t imagine my life out of Poland.

=FUZZYWICKETS]As you said, "shaped Poles in a way that western nations cannot comprehend." You know what else the west can't comprehend? Being Russia's b1tch for decades being shatted on and denied simple democracy, not being allowed outside your country's borders, trying to start all over after being completely raped in the war, waiting on line for hours just to get a bottle of vinegar and a loaf of bread.....

Now it is you who is overreacting. That`s silly what you are writing, do you realise it?

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1090]

A new coinage: Poland is Central Europe which is a sub-region of Eastern Europe.

I like it.

Eastern Europe and Poland

Central Europe is Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This group of countries is the most prosperous (GDP per capita), stable and developed sub-region of Eastern Europe. All of the countries from this sub-region are members of the European Union (EU), and some of them are, or soon will be, members of the Eurozone, such as Slovenia (since 2007), Slovakia (since 2009) and Estonia (from 2011).
