History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Why you have quoted just one post? Other differ much from your statement.

I quoted the post I consider closest to truth.

I provided the link for anybody who disagrees with me to check other versions.

Satisfied? :):):):)

History / Anyone know the name, if true... .... Polish Royal heir [40]

Five generations ago means 100 years.

The last Polish king ruled in late 18 century. That is over 200 years.

Sorry,. everything what happened with/to Polish Royal Heirs after that time is pure nonsense.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Sorry, that is propaganda. :):):):) Created by Americans, probably based on Polish sources.

Here is true data:

'More than 9,000 AK were taken prisoner. Approximately 3,500 preferred to go underground, although the Germans kept their word almost completely. About 16,000 AK soldiers perished or had been reported 'missing presumed dead'. 6,000 were wounded. Almost 200,000 civilians died. The Germans registered 2,000 killed and 9,000 wounded.'

While the Warsaw Uprising is not perfect, I wouldn't call it propaganda.

Let`s call it little whitening then.. :):):):):)

You don`t really think that insurgents, with Molotov cocktails and a few carbines, killed 9000 Germans equipped with tanks, planes and rocket launchers, let alone unlimited guns and ammo?

The capitulation of Warsaw from a Nazi newsreel.

Those Polish AK soldiers, though defeated, look so dignified.

They had the right to look so because the noble fighting against such odds and horrible losses they sustained in combat and in executions made them the best soldiers.

Life / Poland - abandon all logic [25]

Here we are in an absurd world.

That was first written by Norman Davies in his book Poland- God`s Playground in late 1970s.

For any retards who have problems with doing their sums, let me explain it is over 30 years old now.

A bit outdated as a quote about Poland of 21 century.

Come on....

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

Yes, I agree, but Poles have always been reluctant to sing when sober. Some don`t even know the text of the Polish anthem.

and backup is what police call for.

A backing band or backup band is a musical ensemble that accompanies an artist at a live performance or on a recording.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backup_band

And a band who are supporting another band come on stage before them and don't usually do the backing!

Oh, yes! Now I know how it works. Support group performs before, while backup group during. Thanks.

When "backing" groups are mentioned, students prefer support. Or backup. :):):):):)

PS. Contemporary youth hate singing.

Backing can also mean any material that is used to cover the back of something.

Yes, of course, but it is not a problem if a student provides the meaning different from the one we did in class. As long as it is correct, they get a point.

I think there are one or two other meanings - one to do with theatrical scenery and the other an engineering term

Maybe, but we don`t do such unimportant stuff in class. :):):):):)

What textbook does this come from?

Upstream Advanced, chapter 1.

The list of "difficult" words seems like a throwback to the grammar translation method

There are difficult and easy words.

Not grammar but sentence translation. It is a very good exercise which precisely shows one`s aptitude (or inaptitude) in the language. I use it in placement tests and seldom has it failed me.

Without context, some of these words would be hell to translate accurately, e.g. "backing" or "issue" or "congested"

Really? I thought they have quite unambiguous meaning. Backing is wsparcie, issue is kwestia, and congested is zatłoczony. What is wrong with your English? :):):):) My students aren`t troubled by such silly dilemmas. :):):)

Who on earth dreams this stuff up?

Proudly, me. But no need to worry, I showed you only a small part of a typical test. There are still other exercises, so if you don`t like translations, you might do better in multiple choice or transformations etc. :):):)

Pawian that is insane...;)

Yes, I know. :):):):) But it works, believe me. None of my ex-students have any problems with English during their uni studies.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

As a Pol Eng teacher, I have no language problems until I reach the upper advanced level, which can be very idiomatic and colloquial and that is my main sore. Then I have to consult sources or even keys. I do pity my students from advanced groups who have to cram it all for tests. Poor guys.

Here is an excerpt:

Translate
Spur detrimental distractions to tackle to channel
Foresight essential graduation backing instant
To obtain unkempt issue to carry away on a whim
Sibling whereas to assume affluent rage
Dejected call in sick to alleviate remote adolescent
Looming rumour to bring up congested lack

Come on, this is Polish, not Belarussian forum. :):):) Must is in Russ. In Poland - As You Like It.*

* Pam intended to imply that all that people need to live together in harmony is "good sense, love, humor, and a generous disposition." Her usage of Polish is deeper than the surface, and that is part of its appeal to every kind of person.

i made steak and kidney (nerga?) pie

I bought kidneys with that brain, too.

I checked the nutritious value of tripes: They contain less fat than chicken!

tabele-kaloryczne.pl/flaki,p-101.html

Flaki Calories 84 Protein 16 Fat 2.2 Carboh. 0

tabele-kaloryczne.pl/mozg-wieprzowy,p-104.html

Strange, but brain isn`t so fatty despite its appearance:

Mózg wieprzowy 135 10.8 10.3 0

I am just having brain toasts. I said crispy is a must!

When in US, I once bought two pig ears for a nice tasty bite. I tried to fry them crisp but the result was disastrous - as tough as soles.

Funny, but I have never come across pig ears in Poland. Must be typical American stuff.

pawian,FLAKI IS NOT MEAT!! it is tripe...

Come on, intestines/bowels/guts are made of muscle tissue, they work all the time, shrink and expand, have to be of meat nature. :):):):)

jestes pewien ze robilesz scrambled brains?

Yes! Scrambled brain with two eggs, mushrooms, onion, a lot of spices, all fried. I love fried stuff, you know. I eat anything on condition it is crispy. Unluckily, this brain wasn`t. It was too fatty, resembled scrambled eggs.

all i can say is i dont fancy dinner at yours...:)

Hey, I am not some fekking Hanibal Lecter! No need to be scared. :):):):):)

Pawian, I'd be grateful if you posted your favourite bakery foods here.

Do you mean bread or pastry too?

As for bread, my favourite which I buy in Carefour is Oskroba soya bean brown bread: it costs only 2.75 zlotys (matters to me as I am as frugal as a Scotsman from Krakow) per 1 pound and tastes and smells very rich.

Poland bread

BTW, I am not scared by GM soya beans threat at all.
