Study / School meals in Poland [145]

SOCIETY pays for the free meals jon.

Yes, EVERYBODY knows that (caps specially for you as you seem to love them). And most developed societies agree to help the kids in need.

need to try to lay down healthy eating habits early for the sake of the adult that the child will become.

True but not at the cost of a kid getting hungry and risking malnutrition. How long will a sandwich with just veggies last you? Assuming you didn't have a breakfast and won't have a warm meal later?

Generally I would be all for a bit lighter meals for kids that have some other nutritional meal but for some...

Btw to everybody - any thoughts on the nursery menu?

But it needs to pay attention to the amount of fat and salt and not rely too heavily on red meat.

With a kid that doesn't eat properly the rest of the time that wouldn't be my priority. Groving body needs the energy

In this case it was a single mother

Oh I know things happen. It was more a response to the perception that it's always the mother, never the father.

then pays for that dearly later on with overflowing jails).

Not even later on . Quite often it costs more to remove the child not to mention the later consequences. The court, social workers, payments to the foster parents...While quite often half of those money would sort the situation out without causing life long trauma for the kids.

Some people just don't see a difference between poor, unlucky family and a dysfunctional one.

If parents pay for the meals, are they free to children?

? If they qualify for help the parents don't have to pay so I don't know what you mean

It seems we have two issues here now. One is the support for kids that don't have proper food at home and the other the quality of food served in schools.

The lunches are provided free of charge.

It's the kids who don't get that, or even a first breakfast (plenty of kids in Poland don't), that need to be fed.

As far as I'm aware the school dinners in Poland are subsided for those who are in need too. Would have to look into the particulars. If you want to look at it from a poor family point of view I would 100% chose Polish menu. I know one for sure-if I were a hungry kid that didn't have breakfast and possibly won't have dinner I would prefer a warm two course meal to a sandwich. And in such situation meat meal beats vegetarian hands down- one wants to make sure such kid gets enough calories, fats etc. for almost the whole day. If the parent can't make jam on toast or a bowl of cereal it's doubtful they will make beef stew for dinner.

But let's admit it- UK and I assume Ireland have great support for struggling families and in that respect hats off.

Sandwiches, milk and fruit is a healthy, acceptable lunch for a young child.

Sorry but even milk was too much it seems from the menu you posted... I was even tempted to take the p*as that one has to sign up to get a glass of water but stopped myself. :)

Of course the meal is better than nothing but the same things week in and week out? In the Polish manu you have much more variety and that is just one week as it's not repetitive like in yours.

So what the hell is wrong with his lazy ass mother

Probably the same as with his lazy ass father...

did you say that school meals are free?

For the ones in need, yes. Applications are done through MOPS.

Healthy eating doesn't start so late so I managed to get my hands on genuine meals for nurseries.

People in different countries have different tastes....

Oh, of course. Even more than just taste. I don't see many parents paying for lunch that is basically a sandwich. Polish lunch in school has to be a warm meal. A sandwich is a second breakfast and prepared by parents.

But I meant something else.

And then the idiot wanted to give the kids sugar so they could do it themselves!

Oh I wouldn't oppose to sugar being available to the kids that are big enough to add it themselves. Many people won't stomach unsweetened tea or coffee. I meant babies diet. Still many people would sweeten their drink!

Why?

Because it's boring and even worse- awfully repetitive.
And if you want to go deeper- as you say school is not only about knowledge. This menu is so basic it hurts. How about introducing kids to different tastes? Where are vegetables like asparagus, courgette etc. Maybe some mushroom gravy?

trying to cram unappealing 'healthy' foods down their gullets isn't a promising option.

Yes and no. Healthy doesn't have to be unappetizing and you can change eating habits by introducing different stuff but it can't be done at once and definitely not in the fashion of an order.

- I love tofu done right but not when it's masquerading as chicken white meat... blech )

That is a funny paradox. Instead of saying 'This is lovely vegetarian dish' it say ' we can try to make meatless meals taste ALMOST like meat ones... As if they tried to convince themselves.

Im sorry if I don't address all the points but I don't have time and the conversation moved on so much.

, here's the menu from the company that provided lunches for the last school I taught in,

Sorry Atch but I would shoot myself in the head if that was how my school meals looked like.

There is also an interesting article about food in schools here:
kobieta.onet.pl/dziecko/starsze-dziecko/szkolne-stolowki-nie-musza-byc-nudne-i-zle-karmic-oto-przyklad/ycx3glz
It's about how one determined person can change things. Simple school supplier set to make the meals healthier and change many people mindset. She became food coordinator for number of schools now.

I think it's important to remember that not all of kids eat lunch at school. Back in my day most of us didn't. I don't know how it looks now though...

I think biggest problem in Poland is:
-water to drink? Really?
-how can you not add sugar or salt for the kid!!!
In the past crap food was simply too expensive. Sadly the more money people have the worse it gets. In the past people could afford to eat crap once a month let's say. Now they can do it every other day

To be fair GB is much worse generally. Crisps as genuine part of the lunch? This silly little sweet drinks?

social moderates are going to get behind Konfederacja's

Hard for me to believe that. For now Bosak plays it smarts and avoids controversy. I read an article with him the other day and he cut social questions very short and focused on less questionable things. His true colours were coming out when asked about abortion for example or left wing people (apparently I'm a bad person because I'm lwft wing...) I don't understand why other candidates don't frill him more about it.

Did you guys see the poll on who was the best First Lady? Almost 50% said Kwaśniewska. I don't see any of the candidates wifes doing that well in let's say 10 years. I think Kosiniak-Kamysz is the most annoying to me (but maybe it's the pregnancy :P)

I'm afraid Iron might be right here,

He might but I need more compelling argument than 'because I say so'.

You can take it or not.

Of course not! Why should I? For one- it's a discussion and not a trust contest . Two- I don't know you so why the hell should I trust your judgement?

Did you miss the part when I said 'even if he was the right candidate ' and'I don't think he is'?

Sorry, but there is no discussing with you.

on knowing stuff about things...

Which basically mean 'I have nothing'

That is not an issue

I just love your ability to shrug off anything you don't like. You dismiss anything that doesn't agree with your world view as either nonexistent or not important

Told you Biedron stand no chance from the beginning

I never said he did. Even if he was the right candidate (which I don't think he is) I don't think an openly homosexual candidate could win atm. I think he reached the top of what he possibly can do.

he is too lazy, and he doesn't really want to be a president.

And you make such statement based on what?

@Antheads2
As one of the supporters of Razrm told me: He is too good to make him run for president, it would be a waste.

@ PolAmKrakow
I think you are overestimating and underestimating Poles.
Neither Poles (as a majority) will pay attention to reports nor those that do will put full blame on PiS. I'm definitely not a supporter of that party but the economy will crash everywherr

Because I am the only left winger here I decided to picture the emotions of part of that electorate with a real conversation:

A: Co myślicie o rezygnacji Kidawy-Błońskiej i wystawieniu Trzaskowskiego?
What do you think about Kidawa-Blońska resignation and putting forward Trzaskowski?

B: .W sumie za mało wiem, żeby to serio oceniać.
All in all I know too little to seriously judge it

A: A na kogo będziecie głosować?
And who will you vote for?

B: Ale wydaje się, że ona ostro traciła. W pewnym sondażu była poniżej Bosaka. Biedroń też zresztą poleciał w dol
But I think she was losing badly recently. In one poll she was below Bosak. Biedroń but the way went down too

A: Biedron mnie wkurwia a chciałam głosować na niego
Biedroń is pi**ing me off recently and I wanted to vote for him

B: To ja wiedziałam od początku, że mnie będzie wkurwial
I knew from the beginning he will be pi**ing me off

A: No ja jakaś naiwna byłam. Rodzice na Trzaskowskiego będą glosowac a ja teraz nie wiem. Jestem całą sobą za Razem, oni poparli Biedronia a Biedroń odpierdala teraz jakieś maniany

I was naive.Parents will be voting for Trzaskowski and now I'm not sure. I fully support Razem (political party), they supported Biedroń and Biedroń is being silly/stupid

B: No szczerze to chyba też bym wolała Trzaskowskiego
To be honest I think I would prefer Trzaskowski too

A: No i właśnie mi ten Trzaskowski namieszal. Wydaje się być rozsądnym facetem
Yeah and that Trzaskowski messed with my head. He seems to be reasonable guy

B: Lewica kolejny raz zjebala
The left fu*ked it up again

I believe he is independent. Kind of centrist. It seems while religious himself he understands that not everybody is. He is winning young people with this I believe.

He is former TVN presenter so I hope that answers that question. He also run a show in Religion TV.
