Saw an old guy in Hungary demolish about half of a massive chunk of szalonna (basically thick słoniny) armed with nothing but his thumb and a tiny knife he used to carve off small pieces... had to have eaten over half a kilo in one sitting..... an impressive feat.

I dunno... where I'm from drippings (usually plural) is the fat/solids from cooking meat (though where I'm from it's more likely to be turned into a gravy rather than spread on bread).

They're neoliberals and firmly believe that genetics and culture are meaningless... that all people have the same values that are elaborated in EU regulations and they nearly need a period of adjustment for them to become indistinguishable in behavior from their indigenous neighbors.

Choucroute looks like sauerkraut with some other ingredients that are clearly separate whereas bigos is a blend, a single thing.

According to wikipedia it might be related to Alsation Baeckeoffe (or something like cholent or a southern European layered casserole with local ingredients).

I've had wonderful bigos and awful bigos. It's interesting as a dish that it often looks like something you'd be embarassed to feed a starving dog but which can actually be really good.

IME most foreigners in Poland take to bigos and żurek very easily. The problem dishes are things like fish in aspic, rolmops, flaki, kaszanka or makowiec (I like poppy seeds in cake but makowiec is.... too much).

Surprised no one's talking about the story from Wrocław where the police were picking up a guy who had been sentenced for fraud. They handcuffed him in front and didn't search him property allowing him to draw a gun and shoot both police officers in the head...

What's worse, he'd recorded himself on instagram saying if the police come for him he'll shoot first...

Checking out his instagram page (still up, under the name maxfa381 shows a lot of him ranting... he's got a thing about Israel and the jews and how he's being persecuted. Not a lot of mental health on display... why weren't the arresting cops notified of this?

Exactly! The US gave up forced assimilation sometimes during the Great Compression and the results since have not.... been.... encouraging.... among other things not making immigrants assimilate creates pressure on existing minorities (in the US African Americans, generally more like a linguistic and cultural minority than a simple racial classification) to dissimilate from the majority, one of the results of which is BLM....)

I'm still not sure what the positive argument is for enabling migration from NAfrica given their sky high crime rates in Europe (a recent Dutch study found even the generations born in the Netherlands are about 5 times more likely to engage in crime than ethnic Dutch).

Dont' forget the cultural alienation.... one thing that seems to happen a lot in Europe is that parents from muslim countries do not want their children to assimilate to the local culture. Instead they reinforce their culture shock trauma onto them more or less guaranteeing that they will stay in the parents' cultural orbit and not be successful in the host country....

That dynamic creates angry, alienated young men (never a good thing to have).

Forced assimilation (as used to happen in the US) is the only way for an ethnically diverse society to thrive....

Biology isn't so much a determiner as an influence. Individuals are formed by complex interactions between genetics, language and culture which happen in family and broader social and economic contexts. Just randomly plucking a bunch of people from one complex system and expecting them to thirve in a very alien system is a neo-religous belief that people are fundamentally malleable interchangeable widgets.

What proactive steps are taken in any European country to forestall the creation of migrant-based organized crime groups?

It appears nothing at all was done in Sweden which has lots of problems with that, including gangs having minors commit the worst crimes because the Swedish justice system (created by and for high trust high civil order Swedes) is very lenient with them.

I can believe it, for some percentage of the criminally minded will see emigration as an opportunity to fleece new pigeons (or worse). A sensible migration policy would take this into account but I see little evidence for it in real life....

apropos of nothing while looking for stories of foreign criminals in Ireland I kept seeing references to a "Slovak" named Puszka (respelling his name in Polish)... then I saw a picture and immediatley thought 'Gyspy!' which is more important identifying information thatn 'Slovak' since gypsies are over-represented in all sorts of crimes.... wherever they happen to be...

If you let "Slovaks" or "Hungarians" into your country you'll also be letting in some who are noted for criminality (since following outside laws is not a value for Gypsies).

What was the Algerian Dublin stabber doing between 2003 (when he probably should have been deported) and 2023 when he went all stabby?

One twitter comment repeated a rumor he's lost it because of a dispute about benefits (welfare) which suggests that his overall contributions to Irish society were pretty.... minimal... (another comment suggested that he, like the airport stabber and the Slovak criminal Puska all lived off of Irish taxpayers while contributing.... less than nothing to the country.

Meanwhile I learn that it was an ethnic Irish... person (for lack of a better term) who first disarmed the attacker. But what's the interest in that? He's been erased so the media can praise a Brazilian (who also deserves praise though not at the expense of the first to tackle armed Algerian).

Who wants to discuss this like an adult (monty and novi are incapable of adult conversation and everybody else runs away when you bring up incomfortable ideas.....).
