Telling a narcissist to 'grow up' is like telling a fish "climb a tree and eat bananas!"

True.

I once had a lot of contact with a malignant narcissistic sociopath. She was one of the most unpleasant people I've come across.

I'll not tell the stories since I'm still traumatised and you'd probably not believe some. I'll mention though that she used to walk up to pretty well everyone she met and whisper "don't tell anyone, but I'm a multimillionaire". When she was fired (for theft and sexual assault) she sent an email to the whole workplace saying she used to be an Olympic athlete and was returning to sport. She was 62 and around 150 kilos. She used to say she "thrived on conflict".

Interestingly her son back in Australia refused to allow her to see his kids.

In my opinion she was beyond any help. I suspect Novichok is too. His Facebook page is the exact opposite of what he posts on here. It's all peace and love and opposing gun ownership and opposing the republicans and their orange-faded leader.

Whatever is going on in that head is not pretty.

News / Will Poland help defend Greenland against US Imperialism [333]

No.

The invaded country would call the US and invoke Article 5

They wouldn't. The developed world would simply sanction imports from there including financial transfer services and arms purchases and would remove visa exemptions.

slowly and clearly.

There's a very good podcast that I listen to. It's called "The news in slow French".

Worth listening to and helps with following French radio generally.

rump

They won't invade Greenland or any other NATO country. They would instantly find themselves friendless and under international sanctions..

Anyway, trumpcùnt will be out of office in 4 years and hopefully dead before that.

'Smilla's sense of snow'

I think I prefer Miss Smilla's feeling for snow. The register feels more accurate.

Not so great as a murder mystery per se (you know who did it pretty early and the question becomes more.... why?

I'd guess that Hoeg expected his readers to guess quickly. That or he realised they would and moved towards the somewhat strange ending.

He's good at building suspense though and as you say, great fun and as Barney says, a great read. His Book of Danish Dreams is good too but not an especially jolly read due to the dark subject matter.

You're right about the way he approaches Greenlanders, both in a realistic and a romantic way. That contrast reflects the paradoxes of dual heritage.

The heritage thing reminds me of a really good book I read last week. The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. It was on the Sunday Times and NYT best sellers lists and was Barack Obama's book pick.

Not off topic since some of it concerns Greenland and the Inuit too. A lot to do with dual heritage, asylum and migration and the paradoxes around that. I expected it to be painfully politically correct though it isn't. It doesn't make light of racism and unconscious bias however it also takes the pıss out of Identity Grievance and fixating on a part of your ancestry.

Exciting too, set mostly in London (and the Arctic) and has lots of killings and spook stuff. The ending of the book and sting in the tail really isn't so predictable and I recommend it.

@Alien
Get away! Who knew!

Cambozola is German though. Both are better and more flavoursome than the blue cheeses that Biedronka etc sell.

There used to be a Polish-made one similar to the Danish one Danablu called I think Rokpol which did have a little flavour however like Danablu and Cambozola it was factory stuff.

French

Or German or Italian.

And increasingly English is used as a lingua franca (perhaps we should start saying lingua anglia?) in Swiss cities.

Not sure if French was required in Nigeria as it is throughout much of Africa.

It's not used in Nigeria but is used in some other, less populous parts of West Africa. Several. Oh tries are switching to English though despite the French government's attempts to bribe and coerce them not to. The French told them that French was the major international language. They were naive then but are less naive now and can see that it clearly isn't.

founded on Christianity

And those Christian founders took great care to separate religion and public life.

escaped Europe and came here so they could worship freely.

Mostof the early ones from the UK didn't 'escape' and worship freely at home. Some of them were appalling fanatics though, more like the Taliban in religious outlook than any major denomination active today. They left after Cromwell's extremists had been defeated and could no longer impose their bleak religious view (including banning Christmas, dancing and theatre) on others.

BS. Every time a miracle is mentioned it's always as absolute certainty.

Don't be daft.

You're confusing the language of a 1900 year old religious text with the Church's relation to miracles.

Stick to things you know about.

Why do I have to swear on the Bible in court when the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed outside ?

In Poland people don't swear on religious texts in court. In the U.K. you can choose not to. I'm sure it's the same where you are since some Christian denominations refuse to swear oaths on the bible.

Displaying religious texts on public property is controversial and in your country potentially compromises the constitutional separation of religion and state,

"People who" returns 6 times more hits than "people that".

So what? If is much more common than whether however both have their uses.

Which means that my feel of English is correct.

It isn't.

Stop digging yourself deeper into a hole. You'll be lying in a cold one soon enough.

1. People are who, not "that".

Merriam-Webster, a popular American English dictionary, disagrees. In Standard English it can be used in defining relative clauses though it is less comfortable in non-defining relative clauses. In general, "who" is restricted to humans (and sometimes primates and household pets) however "that" is more flexible.

5. "which" does not belong in this sentence

It is fine in that sentence. I would however have started that sentence

Did you know that they have their own unique dialect of Kalaallisut or West Greenlandic

A best selling book from the 90s, called Miss Smilla's feeling for snow, touches on Weat Greenlandic. It's a good book, a murder thriller and I recommend it.

Only 57,000 people in Greenland which means it is the least spoken language in the world.

There are languages with far fewer speakers than that sadly. Especially moribund languages. There is one in Poland that has fewer than 100 living speakers. It's been mentioned here a few times. Its name is Wymysiöeryś.

I have never heard anything so dumb in my life.
That is just not true

You are correct. The RCC believes that miracles are a matter of faith and discernment. They never say that something was 100% a miracle, only that it appears miraculous and they believe that it is such after prayer and reflection.

Any "hate speech" law.

So that's a no then.

There are no 'crazy laws'.

Just eminently sensible ones.

I know more about the UK than you

You don't. You've never been there and hardly ever leave your scruffy house nowadays. A shut-in.

because I hate

We know. Your hate has eaten you.

Eat shlt

The hate that ate you did exactly that.

Enjoy life each day!

when all they look for in loz are trashy young guys with drugs?

Young people like snazzy dressers with charisma too.

Sometimes you have to adjust expectations a bit. Half the men in the world would want to shag Taylor Swift but most of their wives or girlfriends wouldn't necessarily want to be photographed next to her.

UK has 'crazy laws

It doesn't.

Name one.

1984-style Ministry of Approved Speech.

It doesn't have that either.

BTW. Saying what you hate (and you do seem to hate almost everything) isn't illegal. Encouraging murder or inciting violence is illegal and rightly so.

Perhaps you should calm down a bit.

rapist men who claim to be women in women's prisons to share cells with women is legal

The government decided not to do that since it was a bad idea but hey, why care about the truth. You don't.

rent prices

That's what happens when right-wing governments condone landlordism. Hard to know why you mention the U.K. though. A failed attempt by you to deflect .

yeah, and accumulated inflation was 27 per cent

Inflation is 1.9% there.

By 'accumulated inflation', perhaps you're trying to understand Cumulative Inflation. 29% over 9 years is not exceptional and of course in Canada has been accompanied by a rise in living standards, significant poverty reduction and better governance.

Oh, and a 66% increase in average net worth...

then it probably wasn't work for the good of Canadian citizens

It was.

Some interesting facts here. Economic growth under Trudeau was 41%. Under Harper it was 18%. During the Trudeau years income growth was 23%. During the Harperf decade it was 7.6%. Median Canadian net worth soared 66% between 2016 and 2023. They had the second highest GDP ration in G7 during that period.

Also, Trudeau reduced poverty from 14.5% to 9.0%. Conservatives always want to make it higher to increase stress levels, suppress wages, lower taxes for the wealthy and punish the poor.

And very importantly, 500,000 children were lifted out of poverty by the Child Care Benefit.

A little nuke on Warsaw and Poland is done, you know what I mean.

As is anywhere stupid enough to use a strategic nuclear weapon on another country's capital.

What will stop Putin when the Yanks pull out of NATO?

NATO has three nuclear powers and in any case, trumpcvnt and his advisers are not stupid enough to withdraw from NATO.

That doesn't make sense, since they certainly don't.

It has some internal issues and a few local powers are growing

More than some, more than a few.

How do you propose that? The Nazis tried and also "got rid of" people with disabilities. I doubt you are suggesting that too.

Europe's alliance with the US is not based on your military (which is far less successful in actual wards like Vietnam

I'm struggling to think of a war they've ever won on their own.

if a politician does a good job people keep voting for them and that's

Indeed. And of course Jarek Kaczyński was voted out after a very short time as PM.

Premier Trudeau (and his father before him) however got reelected and the current Trudeau stepped down after 9 long years of hard work.

He's still young; I'm sure the world hasn't seen the last of him.

Canadian conservatives

And they'll switch back to the other side in a few years. That's how things happen in democracies, including both Poland and Canada as well as pretty well anywhere else where democracy prevails.

Anyway, he's was elected, re-elected and has decided himself to call it a day.

PiS

They lost.

returning to common sense

That will happen there when the conservatives are voted out again.
