Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

egg custard tart. Not sure if we have anything similar in Poland. ?

I googled pics of it and I sometimes see similar cakes in pastry shops but my wife says they don`t belong here, must be imitations from foreign cuisines.

I was a kid I just left the cabbage on the plate. Now I don't mind it

You are a tough woman. :)

My fav way is herring ala Japanese - with a boiled egg and lost of raw onion and mayonaise.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Sorry, blueberries come in mid summer. I was talking about honey berry, my kids don`t appreciate it because it is a bit bitter, but I like it. Vitamins virtually spring out when you squeeze it. :):)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonicera_caerulea

I am still learning how to farm. In previous years I tried to sow leek and cabbage seeds but to no avail. Today I bought and planted little seedlings of leek, together with cauliflowers, tomatoes, kohlrabi, parsley, celery. The same with onion - I tried to sow seeds twice and nothing. This year I put those bulblets in the ground and they are already shooting. What satisfaction! :)

but moles are a nuisance, indeed.

And hares. Those madafakers come and treat my veg field as a free diner. When I kurwa catch you, I will pull your legs out of your fekking ass!

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

That's not actually a term used by the general English speaking public AFIK, I've never heard it in the US

Quite possible, it is considered high language here and used by posh teachers who are old school gentlemen. You probably don`t deal with them in the USA. :):)

Someone who would do/take up a challenge that others won't? Somebody fearless?

Yes!

Jackass.

Not really, Jackass involves some silliness or even stupidity while cossack is a positive term for sb fearless.

So, there is still this jump me phrase and a new one:

It/sth is a pip/fruit seed..

The worst thing I have eaten in Poland was 'Flaki soup'

I hated flaki till I was 13 when I went to a sports camp. After a strenuous canoeing practice on the lake, we had lunch in a local restaurant and flaki was the dish of the day. I devoured a giant bowl and was surprised it went down so smoothly. :)):

Flaki is a funny dish because it has always reminded me of octopus, squid or calamari - not only with its looks but also with this all dente feeling while gnawing (or chewing).

No hunters or drinking barn in our village but a playing field with a local football team and a voluntary fire fighting brigade, instead. They are the worst drinkers of all - I saw them in action a few times. ):)

Yesterday, I collected the first crop this year - spring onion, called the 7-year-old, I sowed it last year and we had abundant produce.

Now, a little riddle, I can`t resist. :):) What is going to be the first fruit in the orchard in spring time? As early as in May. It is not strawberry or anything from a tree, because it grows on a bush. Hint - not a native Polish plant but survives Polish winters excellently.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

Yes, exactly, at last! I am so proud of you, you did it! :):)

As for Wyszyński`s words, they are great, but let`s remember that healthy nationalism is just another word for patriotism - loving your nation and serving it - that`s what many Polish heroes did in history and we call them patriots, not nationalists.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

When a conversation flies off, it is OK because it proves that the thread is necessary when people want to discuss it.

But when members intentionally or out of ignorance litter it with sth that doesn`t pertain to the subject matter, it is not OK. Spike can start another thread called "Any Quotes BY Poles about everything" and I don`t care.

But forum users who might drop in here expect to read about sth really Polish, not universal words of wisdom which they can find anywhere on the Net. When they see Spike`s and his sort`s rubbish, they will leave in disappointment and never come back. In this way we will lose them, only because some halfwits can`t keep order in their minds and the forum too.

So, Milo, what did you learn about Polish things from Spike`s recent litter? Here you are : "The use of coercion results from disbelief in argumentation."

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

they will get weapons anyway. They often even prefer to get illegally since they don't have to provide any form of ID when buying them.

That`s gangsters or mafia. When they are involved, you will be helpless anyway, armed or not. Casual criminals don`t have an access to guns. Besides. I can imagine what would happen on the roads where now drivers only show a finger or simply insult each other. Besides, the access to guns would also change the police`s attitude to citizens, accidental shootings of innocent people would certainly rise. Do you want to check it out if you look provocative enough for a police officer to shoot at you, just because he/she wasn`t sure of your behaviour? etc etc

All in all, it is obvious you haven`t really considered all aspects of the issue. If you dream about having a gun, go the the USA.

and they certainly don't want wannabe Rambos causing trouble for them.

Exactly.
I know a few guys from a local club close to our school, they send their kids here, they consider themselves an elite - mostly doctors, dentists, a prosecutor, local businessmen. No teachers. :):)

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

Again, you are littering the thread with sth silly which doesn`t pertain exclusively to Poles or Poland but is a general statement of universal meaning which can be said about any nation or country in the world.

It is really strange - in other threads you sound like an intelligent person while here you seem a halfwit who doesn` t inderstand basic things. Why? :):)

The title reads: Quotes ABOUT Poles, and not any quotes by Poles.

Only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.

Spike, you cherish illusions about armed good guys preventing massacres. Bad guys are not stupid, they choose place and time as they wish to get maximum result, usually good guys are far away from the place or even when present, they don`t carry their guns. Consider school massacres - do you imagine teachers carry guns at school? That`s sick.

Like the school shootings where they hid like cowards outside the building? Decent citizens would be paralysed by fear

Exactly.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

The problem in Poland is that traditional ways of making spinach are kind of... meh, with frozen spinch

Yes, but I remember that shytty spinach from the times when I was a little boy, that was really long ago, they couldn`t have had frozen stuff then, and it looked the same as the one today. It means no matter if it was fresh or frozen and how you cook it , it always looks like cow shyt. :):)

Never heard about that sweet carp, must be even more disguising

Yes, one needs to get accustomed to it. But I like it for one thing - it`s fattty. When young, I refused to eat fat in meat or sausage. And I preferred to eat lean fish too. Now I prefer fatty fish like carp or salmon, not to mention my favourite - eel.

A red line for me is the way carrots are often served in PL. Diced, luke warm and in a dreadful sugary gloop.

Oh, yes, another thing I used to put on my sisters` plates when they weren`t looking during the meal . :):) Probably the invention of communism. :)

gotta agree with you on the eels though.......yuk!

Do you really mean the standard, snake-like eel? It`s delicious. It is the most expensive fish available in Polish supermarkets, mostly smoked.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

I far prefer cabbage (in lots of different forms) to fashionable garbage vegetables like..... (shudder).... kale (jarmuż)

Yes, this and spinache. YUK. Another food I have never eaten (the first and last time when I was 6) , because it has always looked like green shyt to me, reminded me of cow droppings in the field. I can`t even show a photo, nobody in our family eats it.

My ultimate gołąbki would be with picked cabbage leaves (as in Romania and Bulgaria)

Pickled, you mean? In Hungary they make golabki with fermented cabbage - sauerkraut style. I must try to make them one day.

Food we grew up with, maybe you did not grow up with cabbage as a staple part of your diet?

No, silly, I didn`t grow up on boiled whole cabbage leaves because I have hated them since my early childhood till today. Those rightists are really mad if they connect Polishness with cabbage. :):) You are not too bright, right? :):)

:):) No, I am an alien from outer space. It is strange you haven`t realised it yet. I was sent here on a mission.
You are desperately trying to find out if I am a Pole or not, even in the food thread. Are all rightists so obsessed? :):)

but like the cabbage a lot

Yuk! :):) In case of boiled cabbage, I tolerate sauerkraut in bigos or this mashed stuff added to fried pork chop - schabowy. But whole cabbage leaves are disgusting somehow.

Ripped gołąbki:

I imagine that gołąbki are a lot cheaper/better in Poland...

I consider gołąbki a controvercial dish. I love the stuffed part (meat and rice, sometimes buckwheat etc) and hate the outside cabbage covering - I always leave it on the plate. Instead of nicely slicing a gołabek, I tear them open and pick up the inside.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

Janusz Korwin-Mikke is a vital part of Polish contemporary political culture.

Of course, I didn`t mean his person. After all, I quoted Molotov so you had the right to quote Korwin and we have perfect balance in nature. :):) I meant that the quote you offered us wasn`t exclusively about Poles but about voters in general, especially European ones, because he made that remark about European elections, didn`t he?

Let's take Churchill for example. he has produced a handful of interesting, inspiring and thought provoking quotes.

It`s a pity you didn `t mention the one about Poles.

There are few virtues that the Poles do not possess-and there are few mistakes they have ever avoided.

Spity like bela

Its obscurity comes from the fact that a German made fighter plane became associated with heavy drinking.

is 57th expression on the list. :) But I rarely hear it now, young people prefer to use their own inventions.

like "pisac", "POpisac", "pisYWAC", "ROZpisywac" etc. are for us foreigners!

Yes.

German made fighter plane became associated

On second thoughts, I think I know. Messershmitt planes used to wreak huge havoc during WW2 and so does a drunk person.

.Is this one on the photo 'karp po zydowsku'?

Yes!

Actually probably rather tasty.

Yes, soft and sweet. And those raisins and almonds are fun, too. You can also relish this delicious sauce. As for bones, a person who has eaten carp every year since birthday, is well aware of their location in fish fillets/pieces.
