But only Warsaw ime.... and even then restricted to certain areas (esp a square kilometer or two radiating out from Centralna).

They exist in other cities but in much smaller numbers... where I live a problem in winter is getting them into homeless shelters (which have unused beds) because they can't drink....


That's in a lot of places... years ago I saw a documentary on homeless women who weren't officially counted as such (couchsurfing among friends, living in a care, that kind of thing) and these were women who had been middle to upper middle class (so they didn't qualify for any kind of social help). Rough.....

are your taste buds exhausted or something? Polish cuisine is not high spice but there's lots of flavor when it's done well.

are you big into chili peppers? the active ingredients are metabolized in a way similar to that of opium, which is why chili addicts need bigger and bigger hits and maybe excessive use dulls the palate?


First I had to explain it was a food and I wasn't referring to the drug but then the description (left over meat cut up into little pieces and fried with potatoes and maybe some other stuff) did not seem appealing at all to them.

My advice is not to try to become an absentee landlord in Poland unless you're very fluent in Polish and understand how the culture and legal system work.

I'm not sure if it's still the case but it used to be that you could not evict a person without offering alternate accomodation at a similar level.

Housing laws are partially a legacy of the fact that Poland suffered from a terrible, terrible housing shortage for decades. This was caused by the destruction of a lot of housing stock in WWII and communist incompetence in building housing afterward (and the communists used the shortage as a form of social control). It affected people's lives the same way that natural disasters do in other countries.

The questions you're asking indicate you're not ready for Poland. Maybe try Sweden or a neighboring country first...

Don't put any money toward being a landlord in Poland unless you're willing to lose it and not be upset.

I remember trying to explain corned beef to Polish people (I forget why) and they just gave me a look that said "What are you talking about, crazy person?"

I've never been a fan (except maybe corned beef hash) but then try to explain 'hash' to Polish people and you get a look that says "Why do your people like eating garbage?"

Some food does not translate....

Italy I might give you.... but the others?... AFAICT quality of life is highly dependent on income, while a pretty great quality of life in Poland... not as much.

Notice that almost all of the countries that have borders with the former, cursed, ussr meet the target.... (turkey the exception is the least vulnerable to russian aggression).

I thought the latest theory was that they were camp followers who followed a group of soldiers out of the Indian sub-continent, were sold into slavery and then escaped.

The camp-follower theory certainly fits a lot of their traditional occupations....

Many moons ago I had a friend who'd been (briefly) in a Peace Corps type group (more than one IIRC). Anyway they were told during their first training something like "If it's not happening already, you're not going to start it" outlining the limits of what was actually achievable.

If a community isn't even trying to educate itself (for example) then youre new school is not going to be used and/or will fall into disuse as soon as your back is turned.

I'd say it's more the values they brought from India (esp clannishness and traditionalism for its own sake) and negative definition. They self-define as not gadje so they reject the kind of values and policies that could lift them up.

And... most are happy enough. Most would rather be poor Gypsies than prosperous Gadje....

Accepting that not all groups of human have the same preferneces is not fun or easy but it's necessary to create funcitonal policy.
