History / Quotes of Polish or German kings, generals [41]

I think my knowledge of German is pretty good, but thanks :)

Did you find it now? Well, it doesn't matter anyway. Perhaps it's old-fashioned German?

You mean that: "haut ab"?

No.

I said SECTION THREE, not TWO.

It's common speech for: "Go away".."Leave already

I know :) I was born and raised about 8 km from the German border :)

History / Quotes of Polish or German kings, generals [41]

I would translate that as: "Oh you poor skin!"

No, it translates as "Oh you poor devil."

A quote of a well-know German politician:

Polen hat heute nacht zum erstenmal auf unserem eigenen Territorium auch mit bereits regulären Soldaten geschossen. Seit 5:45 Uhr wird jetzt zurückgeschossen! Und von jetzt ab wird Bombe mit Bombe vergolten!

This morning, Poland for the first time shot at us on our own territory with regular troops. As of 5:45 we shoot back! And from now on, every bomb will be retalliated with bombs.

History / Quotes of Polish or German kings, generals [41]

"Haut doch die Polen, daß sie am Leben verzagen, ich habe alles Mitgefühl der Welt für ihre Lage, aber wir können auch nichts dafür, daß der Wolf von Gott geschaffen ist, wie er ist, und man schießt ihn doch dafür tot, wenn man kann,"

"Haut" can also mean poor or perplex. In that case, the translation would be:

"Poor Poles, giving all hope up on life; I have all the pity in the World for their situation, but we cannot help it that the wolf was created by God the way he is and that we kill him for being what he is, when we can."

But in this case it would indeed be:

"Just beat the Poles until they give up on life (...)"

Law / Poland's going forward while Britain is still trying to wake up [86]

content removed

Thank you m-g. And pass my words of gratitude to your Mom, please.

No problem. Glad that we could help a little. I don't know if she still remembers it as her memory is getting a bit hazy lately, but I will. :)

Besides, I would do it any time again, imo it's a duty of those who are better off to help those that are not so well-off.

I refuse to lick your boots just because you feel superior.

Where do I state that I feel superior? I only vent my annoyance by that constant nagging about what a shytehole the UK is, how they pale in comparison with the Motherland, how low and intolerable the British virtues are, compared to the Polish ones. That's all.

Besides, it's an easy argument you're using now. Any critisism on Poles criticizing the UK or any Western country for that matter is being dealt with that the person in particular must feel superior to Poles. Too easy and nonsensical.

If it only takes a short stay abroad for them to turn round and start praising Poland, I would say this means that the West is indeed sorely over-advertised.

Over advertised? You are aware that in Polish job-agencies UK and Ireland are praised for being the places where you can find work, right? I don't know who has put those ads there, perhaps the Polish authorities in this field, perhaps the British or Irish, but fact is that most countries in the EU knew what was going to happen when Poland would join the EU and all closed their borders, except for the UK, Sweden and Ireland. They were the only countries you could go to as a Pole back then. So frankly, I don't buy that argument that you went there out of educational or cultural deliberations. It was the only country you COULD go to back then, there were besides IRL and SE.

Go to school fool...

Seeing the way you write, I would suggest you do the same :)

The initial discussion was PL versus the UK

As are nearly all the threads. Like the UK is the only country with masses of Poles within her borders. And besides that, the principle remains the same.

Why understandably you wanted to go to the UK to check things out? I read also about how great things are in certain countries, yet I don't feel the need to go there, except for hols, as I am perfectly happy where I am now. If you were so perfectly happy in PL, why feel the need to go somewhere else? And besides, even New York city will seem like just another city after you lived there for a couple of years.

But that wasn't the point. The point was that many Poles indeed come to the UK or any other country to simply make money, which a lot of them then take home to buy a house or whatever. It's ok if they want to do that, I have nothing against that, but it pysses me off when the next thing you hear them say is that the West is such a shytehole and that PL is the greatest, most glorious country in the world, lightyears ahead of the West. That's very ungrateful. And that was the point I made.

Exactly! But at least Poles are slowly accustomed with the idea of the toilet paper. I also heard that a soap poisoning levels caused by attempts to eat it are in the sharp drop.

You didn't get it, didn't you?

Oh, and btw: IF PL is going forward, then it's mainly due to the input they get from the EU AND the ppl who bring home the pay they earned in the West. :) Without the West you would be nowhere :))) A little more gratuity would be in place.

Poland never fell into recession

Nope, because it was never on top of things anyway :) Without having been at the top, you cannot fall back, eh?

But anyway, this is yet another nonsense thread - what's the purpose of this thread? When PL joined the EU, there were some towns in the East of PL that didn't even have a sewage system yet. So what the heck are we talking about anyway.

I'm getting tired of all those "let's put the UK down and all the rest of the West for that matter". If the West is such a shytty hole that's going down, why do so many Poles come here to work? I really hate ungrateful b*stards like that: they come here to grab the money and look down upon the countries that gave them a chance to outgrow the shythole they came from and build sth of a decent future. A future they would not have had if they'd stay where they were.

History / Poles should emulate Jews? [153]

All they have done is create a bunch of wars with Iran.

Hm, as far as I can remember there hasn't been an open war between Iran and Israël. And for your information: most of the wars the Israeli had weren't started by them.

It sounds like a Jewish conspiracy to me so that they can control Poland to carry out whatever they are cooking up.

Why do so many ppl here think that Israël regards PL as so important that they want to control it by all means? I don't think the average Israeli cares more about PL than the average Pole cares about Israël.

But to address the topic: If the Poles are to emulate a ppl, I think the only ppl they should emulate is themselves. They have their own strengths and weaknesses and there's the point to start. Not from some other ppl.

UK, Ireland / Moving from Ireland to Poland [39]

The Goverment and Banks here have destroyed our way of life

What way of life? Ireland was down and out on the floor for most of its existence, except for the last 15 years when the government decided to pump the economy up arteficially. It's a dearly wrong statement to say that now you're going back to your normal level that the way you lived for the past decade was your normal way of life. I hate the arrogance of the current generation of Irish who think that the way it was over the last ten years was the normal mode for Ireland. Well, it wasn't. Welcome to reality of economies going up and economies going down. We from the continent have been used to that for the past 100 years already, we know it can happen. But when you're down on the ground like Ireland has been most of the time and never experienced economic growth before you just have to get used to economies going down as well. It's normal. And besides: liberating multinational corporations of corporate tax for ten years only works for ten years. After that they will just leave. There's no such thing as loyalty within those corporations. And they are leaving as you can see. Only thing you can blame the govt for is that they arteficially created an economic boom without creating a sustainable infrastructure. They should've done so while they still had the chance. Now it's too late and Ireland will go bancrupt (bailing out banks for too much and having to pay the EU finally sth back) by 2013.

But all this doesn't take away the sheer ignorance of the current generation of Irish. Born with a mobile in their hand and thinking Ireland has always been the richest country in the EU and forgetting that it was because of that EU, else you'd still be one of the poorest countries in Europe. So don't gimme that nonsense that you're disillusioned with the govt. You should be grateful to them for allowing you for a short period of time to experience what it's like living in a Western European country and to be part of the EU.

Life / SOME OBSERVATIONS ABOUT POLAND AND POLISH SOCIETY [297]

I've heard customer service is terrible in Poland. Well, judging by Polish cashiers here in Dublin and if they are anything like how they are in PL, I can vouch for that. Only a handful say actually "How are you?". The rest just scans the items and name the price without replying to my standard "There you go" when I hand over the money. Have to say that Irish are not much better and in the bigger cities, the Dutch are neither. The only place with just a very few exceptions I met with great customer service was in the US. But there I always get the unpleasant feeling that they only do so out of fear that the company will get sued in some form.

UK, Ireland / Polish and East European prostitutes in the UK [240]

Is Prostitution becoming the profession for East European females in western Europe?

Nothing new. One year after communism fell one could see the female population in the Amsterdam Red Light District change rapidly from oriental and black girls to blondies and other girls that looked a lot like us. Mainly Russian and Polish.

Edit:

Two key factors have led to a huge rise in this kind of prostitution - the influx of girls from Poland and other eastern European countries which acceeded to the EU in 2000, and the increasing use of the internet to advertise their services.

Isn't that a bit late? Considering they were prostituting themselves already for over a decade in Amsterdam?

People are looking for polish

What? Shoepolish?

I think Greece has other problems right now than to worry about topless or nude girls on the beaches. And besides, if the Greek team last night was representable for the Greek men, then Greek men are ugly and don't shave at all.

Edit: I think the Greek team should take the cheapest pssbl option to go home again as we are paying for it :)

Food / Bees - honey in Poland [13]

I've noticed a distinct lack of bees this year

Yes, I've heard that bees are decreasing in numbers drastically everywhere across the world. But there is good news: the honeybee is not going to be extinct! Following article is in Dutch, but I will translate it for you:

"The recent attention to bees with the press and the government (ie there was a petition to stop the dying of the bees) is mainly aimed at honeybees. Honeybees are however domesticated. Beekeepers can create populations of honeybees; honeybees growing extinct as has been suggested therefore is out of the question. Beekeepers keep bee-populations often in huge concentrations of sometimes dozens to hundreds of population. This situation is similar to the huge cattlefarms, where illnesses can be galore and are usually expected. Huge concentrations of beepopulations can make life for other types of bees impssbl. Solitairy bees, like the (also socially living) bumble bee are more important for pollination of native plants. So, no type of plant will go extinct if the honeybee goes extinct."

bijensterfte.nl/nl/node/290

So that is good news...There will always be enough bees to be sure of a steady flow of honey :)

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

frd

I meant a car set, mea culpa. In NL it's forbidden to use your phone in the car without car set. If the police catches you using your mobile while driving without a car set, you can get a fine of roughtly 200 Euros, the price of a car set in all, plus you have to purchase a car set within a week after the offence; to be proven by showing up at the police station for inspection and showing the bill. The penalty was intentionally set to the price of a car set to make ppl realise that it's necessary. For the price of one car set, you can prevent having to pay it twice. They also have a new law in the making which will lower the amount of alcohol in your blood while driving from 2 per thousand to 1 or 1,5 per thousand. And don't think you're not screwed if you drank on Sat night and drive on Sun morning or -afternoon. If the police stops you for a bloodtest, there's still too much alcohol in your blood and you have to pay a fine starting with about 350 Euros. If the Dutch govt could only get it through to the Poles living in NL, they wouldn't be fined so often for drink driving...
