Food / Half-free Christmas bigos. SMACZNEGO at Christmastime! [99]

Although we don't celebrate, last year, after much nagging on my part, my wife finally made me two classic Polish Christmas favorites (I've been told): Kluski z makiem (noodles with poppy seeds) plus grzadki i koper, kinki z smietanka surowa aka beets with dill, caraway seeds and sour cream.

Yum-yum!!

Genealogy / I need help translating few Polish names and places. [4]

Most Polish place or town names have historical German equivalents.
Not clear though to be honest how one would "translate" a Polish place name!
In most countries, names are names and are kept as is, if at all possible.

I might be able to help in terms of titles, names of offices etc.
As here in the States, Polish districts may read the official name plus the district, county or specific region.

Once "life" has been removed from a non-formed, partial being, it never even knows what happened.
The law defines murder as the willful extirpation of a sentient being.
The fetus is as yet a nascient, while NOT conscious organism, therefore, the term "murder" doesn't apply, any more than it would in case of killing a dog, cat etc.

Define murder, johnny. I dare ya!

Rich, I can't for the life of me fathom what on earth abortions have to do with school shootings, really I can't!

I'd think if anything, the opposite would be the case, namely, that the UNwanted offspring of teen moms would be messed up enough to commit such massacres.

If mothers, that is, if families in general can't afford children, certainly they oughtn't be mandated to have them.

Perhaps in small, rural, religious communities, an "accidental" pregnancy can more easily be absorbed into the society than in large urban centers, if for no other reason than there's more of an ingrained social network, allowing close family to pitch in no matter what, or face the consequences later on.

Nothing turns a Pole on (man or woman) more than a foreigner who makes love to them in Polish!

Married myself now for nearly twenty-five basically blissful years, I once dated a Polish girl when we were both in our young twenties, and Slawomira confessed that she fell in love with yours truly when I started speaking Polish to her....unexpected and unscripted....MISTAKES AND ALL.

Travel / Polish people have a weird attitude torwards tourists [82]

Caught a YouTube of a black guy meandering around the Polish countryside, trying the ask strangers directions, beginning with a well-intentioned, if foreign accented "G-I-N D-A-W-B-R-A-Y!" and watching the suspicious, almost hostile, reactions he got from locals.

The dude was well-dressed, as I recall, and looked like a regular tourist, only of another complexion.

Makes ya wonder though whether those local yokels had ever watched TV and seen parliamentarian John Godson up there on the tube LOL

Jews certainly did need to assimilate into everyday, gentile life, 'course they did!

Those who simply lived out their remaining days tied to the shtettl were one who lost out in the end.

Adaptation without forgetting, while not unthinkingly clinging to, one's roots is the key to successful integration:-)

The number of assimilated half-Jews in pre-War Poland was indeed small, yet produced some renowned poets, writers and musicians, such as Jan Brzechwa, Jan Kiepura, Jozef Hofmann, along with many others:-)

In some respects, the US has started to resemble Poland. You folks still control abortion and our Supreme Court merrily voted down Roe v. Wade!

Rightist fundamentalist ignoramuses in states such as Georgia, Alabama, and Montana want to monitor 24/7 what our kids watch, read or listen to on social media.

The difference is merely Poland's nearly hundred percent Catholic majority as opposed to America's ever waning (if forever battling) vocal Protestant Fundamentalists.

Does there exist a bar/night club in Warsaw known as "KROKODIL"?
I understand from a Polish friend that it has been around for many, many years and was extremely popular during the Communist period.
