History / Karol Wojtyla, the man who become a pope (video) [58]

If you're referring here to the age-old sex abuse scandal within the Church, you're sadly correct!

Perhaps the entire point here is that Wojtyla was NOT a saint, nor did he ever pretend that he was....holier than thou.

He was in the truest sense the people's pope, who proved his metal often under the most trying of circumstances.

History / Karol Wojtyla, the man who become a pope (video) [58]

Karol Wojtyla was the first Pope in recorded history to publically apologize to to the Jews for centuries of anti-Semitic hatred and persecution at the hands of the Roman Catholic Church! As with many committed Christians, he struggled with his faith and tried his level best to reconcile his deep belief in Christian teachings with the wrongs perpetrated against many non-Christians in the name of the Church.Unlike Martin Luther, he didn't excoriate the Jews for not wishing to convert to the "superior" religion:-)

During the Second World War, he showed rare courage as a member of the Polish Underground Resistance while still a young priest, continuing to fight the scourge of Communism and dictatorship until his last breath.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

A question about the family name KOSZARSKI.
Might the translation be BASKETMAKER'S SON, or something
in this neighborhood?

Work / Are Poles workaholics? [150]

Perhaps because as immigrants abroad, they felt they had to work twice as hard.

Work / Are Poles workaholics? [150]

In my experience, Poles always had the reputation of being most industrious! Still recall the name of my first Polish textbook from the Communist Era, "Pracowita Matka", praising the image of the hard-working Polish mother, in accordance with the propaganda of the period:-)

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

@Milo, mate you continue to expose yourself as little more than a troll!

@jon, Oh well, serving Shepherd's Pie to a guest's nothing to "stew" about, is it? LOL

News / News article on Poland absorbing Ukrainian refugees [47]

This I can well understand, they being Slavic brethren and all!
Apparently though, the Ukrainians have a less than savory reputation among many Poles for certain acts of violence perpetrated years ago.

Nice post. Thanks, jon!
Why though need the offerings necessarily be "posh", unless of course one is trying to make a particular impression on wealthy company?

News / News article on Poland absorbing Ukrainian refugees [47]

Apparently even after one year, many refugees from war-torn Ukraine have no intentions of returning to their country, but have opted to remain in Poland.

According to the New York Times, such a decision would tax Poland's school system, having to re-train teachers and bring refugee pupils up to speed in Polish.

Any reactions from Polish members?

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

England does have certain wines such as port and claret which, because of a colder climate for growing grapes, Poland doesn't have. If I lived in England and had a Polish house guest, I'd probably opt for typically English Stilton or Wensleydale and a nice claret:-) For an encore, perhaps some rare roast beef, maybe some shepherd's pie for a main course.

Language / Extremely Hard - Polish the hardest language to learn [226]

@Bobko,
Oh, come on yourself!
In terms orthographic consistency, SlovakMaster might well have you over a barrel, buster.

Polish is to be sure orthographically consistent, most of the time, yet as somebody who's also studied Hungarian, the latter has ZERO silent vowels and reveals a regularity in its consonants which beats even Polish:-)

Moreover, Hungarian's ever consistent pronunciation and regularity of intonation leaves Polish at the starting gate, I'm afraid,

...which among the Slavic languages has clitics (unknown in Russian or Polish!) as well as more tenses per se than in Polish, for example.

My forrays into Hungarian promptly ended when my teacher returned to Szombatvasarhely following the Covid outbreak! Compared with Polish, Hungarian has zero Slavic roots, although considerable cross-pollination of neighboring vocabulary from nearby Slavs. Polish of course has seven cases compared with the approx. fifteen or so in Hungarian:-)
