Life / Grisly crimes in Poland [124]

the topic came up in the thread

It shouldn't really have. Usual suspects. The topic bleeds into every thread and usually by people (don't take it personally - I wasn't thinking of you) who've not done a blind thing in their lives to attempt to mitigate it by doing something that increases opportunity and economic development in the poorest countries.

it implies Europe is an infinite space.... it's like the population projections for Africa that would only be possible if Africa were run in very.... non-African ways.

That's true, however Europe is the most affluent and urbanised continent and more and more will come. Space is not their main consideration.

I suspect that people movement (and the growth of AI) will be the defining trends of our century, barring another technological leap and/or WW3.

Anyway, best to continue the discussion, should you wish, in more appoporiate threads. When I get back from work, I'll maybe look for some grisly crimes to post about.

I had an idea a while ago to write about the Mazur Cannibal Family (a thing in the late 50s/early 60s about a particularly dangerous family to the north of Warsaw) or about the 1990s infamous Warsaw Head Basher who used to creep up behind women in the centre of Warsaw, bash them on the head with a hammer and then run away. He was never caught..

It's a x after the date. I just clicked on the one for your post #7 and the report thing came up.

I'd guess Admin will see the Mrs Whatsit's loans spam when he has a look later. I think he's in or near Illinois where its 4am so probably he's snoring away happily.

'Nothing can be done to lower migration rates" is a very dreary theme.

Yet we don't see a drop, despite any measures. It will only increase.

A thread on the actual subject (there are all too many here) would be a more apt place for you to vent on this issue.

Did you miss the High School English class

Did you miss the Social Education lessons when they explained that people get bored and often stressed by constant repetition of the same dreary themes.

We know you're no fan of some types of migration, however raising things in a constant "why oh why" way just stresses good people and gives fuel to racists.

Some things are easier for countries to fix than others; this is one of the hardest things and migration will only increase over the next few decades.

Scandinavia ..... crime statistics.

I suspect you know that reporting rates (for any crime) are far higher in Scandinavia than in a lot of places and in Poland they are lower.

Poland (with some help of Eastern neighbors) can keep the psychotic crime level high enough

Very true.

And I'd guess that due to low reporting rates, the actual crime rate in Poland is higher than most people would guess.

As far as I know, nobody's 'imported' (except for VIP experts headhunted by the goevrnment or big companies, or maybe footballers however they're both the exception), nor do these crimes appear to include anyone from elsewhere.

And nor as far as I know do any particular non-European demographics in PL have a crime rate higher than that among other residents of Poland.

Go to a doctor

One of the victims was a Doctor. This is by the by however and of course the crimes have nothing to do with immigration.

Btw, they haven't ruled out further victims, maybe strangled in their flats and lying there dead.

We probably won't know until the heat from the radiators starts to liquify their gruesome cadavers and they start to drip drip drip through their downstairs neighbours' ceilings.

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

Prince Charles, however, has been known to relish shellfish and oysters

Me too. Most Polish people have never had them, or if they have, they've had them at a daft price at an oyster bar (there's one in Warsaw), maybe 'les six' or 'les douze' with a glass of champagne.

If your home in the UK is near the sea, it's nice to take Polish visitors to the harbour where oysters are landed. There's always a place where you can eat them cheaply, (in Scarborough it's the front part of a fish wholesalers), necked one by one with nothing but maybe a squeeze of lemon, so fresh they're probably still alive.

And also hilarious Bitcoin falls in progress

Cryptocurrency seems like Ponzi schemes. Most of it is scamming one way or another.

Greed really. Interest from a savings account plus some safe and ethical investments should be enough for anyone.

Two

Three now. A Pole (who was caught trying to leave a flat) for one attack, a Pole and a Ukrainian for another.

there's no need to import more.

As far as I know Ukrainians are not 'imported' nor equally as far as I know does the Ukrainian coommunity have a higher crime rate than society as a whole.

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

Indeed it is about Marxist revolution and establishment of a totalitarian régime.

Hard to know where you pulled that bit of nonsense from.

Communism

There seems to be an odd idea that Marxist-Leninist-Kimilsungist thought is the gold standard of the Workersa' Movement. It isn't, any more than a moderate, one-nation conservatism wants fascism.

the Left cuts all that minority/foreigner/LGBT

That won't happen, any more than your far right politicians won't cut out nationalism.

There have been a series of attacks on old women in Warsaw over the past ten days. Strangled in their flats and robbed. Several potential perps have been arrested and are being questioned.

Don't know about Germany but in Poland the left seems to be totally fixated on genital issues

That sounds like the Razem bourgeois left rather than the SLD workers' left.

Other countries have the same split too. I prefer the workers' left, however they really do refuse to evolve sometimes and get stubborn. The problem with grassroots organisations ids that they are resistant to change.

If they could only somehow break this magical fixation on genitals and concentrate on traditional leftist aims, they would gain much more support.

I kind of agree, however LGBT (at least the first three letters) isn't about genitals. It's about people iving a decent life without hassle from individuals and sectors of society who have unwanted same-sex 'ueges' and wish they didn't, translating that to hostility and exclusion.

Socialism is entirely about workers' control over the means of production and getting the full fruits of their labour. As long as the right wing is infused with bigotry though, the blue haired and tattooed people will stand with us (or claim to) and we will stand with them.

Food / Poles have a more loving attitude to food than here in the UK [169]

Irish stew.

Irish stew is what the French call a blanquette. Try Lancashire hotpot if you can get the lamb or maybe a nice pan of Scouse which is very simple and cheap, and which you can do nicely with minced pork.

His pic looks like soup to me too.

Same. Though even the Zupa Gulaszowa that you get in the south west is vhunkier and thicker.

Polish goulash

After I fist came to PL, my best friend and his brother came to visit. They have Polish roots. We went out and had gulasz. They described it as "rank".

oysters

Originally so cheap and so many off the coast of Kent that they were used in pies to bulk them up and use less meat.

here are the stats

Wow! That's a lot of page visits considering there's very few posters...

They can't all be spooks working for the Polish government, wanting to see what we're saying!

I do know that some journalists in national media outside Poland read things here when they're writing articles regarding Poland and as I've said, the trash talk (most of it coming from the same individual) certainly puts people off. A few people known to me who live in Warsaw that sometimes read things in the forum but have never posted have said exactly that.

Your drivel doesn't have much effect on me, Ryszard. I used to work in a psychiatric secure unit where some of the more disturbed inmates would say things like that. It does however annoy people who are easily shocked, deters new posters and derails threads; obviously deliberately.

I suspect you'd be delighted if this forum shuts down through lack of users.

Note this is older iPad and the jumping problem happens when typing a post but no issues when typing in edit mode

Same, however the iPad is from 2022 so newish. The previous one (which still works and someone else uses) was the same.

It happens in a few other places but is particularly noticeable here. Maybe it's a case of the software of the product (no I don't want to save in the bloody cloud, not in Africa on a crap internet connection)being ahead of the reality of the internet.

Edit (very slow internet here today)

I just saw Admin's reply and it more or less makes sense to a tech layperson. I'll have a go on a browser other than safari when things are going faster.

specify what they mean

For me it's not so much the age of the software (I've no idea what's outdated or not anyway, not being a much of a techie) as the way the screen jumps up and down when using apple products. MacBook fine, iPad not so fine and iPhones, tragic, especially before the new software update where you slide your finger around (this partially motivates the problem) trainer than type.

Presumably other people have this problem. I think Lenka posts on a phone since her posts are usually rief and Amiga500 too however whether they use android or iOS maybe makes a difference. Maybe Strzelec uses since there are a lot of typos. It's probably related to Apple's/Safari web browser. We added some "hack" to browsers that don't support the modern native feature (ie. auto-grow forms). I believe it should be fixed in time when we remove this hack and Safari supports it natively.

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

rooted in Marxism

It isn't.

The left predates Marx.

Instead of coming out with rubbish like suggesting that anyone who dislikes a particular controversial politician must have some made-up "derangement syndrome", try looking at actual history.

Several of the founding fathers of your country were very much on the left and were inspired by the very people who coined the term "left wing" (decades before Karl was born) and you would not have either independence or a constitution without them.

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

the thread header somehow triggered me!

Don't be sarky, BB; members of some nations do humour better than others. There's a reason we've not heard of any French comedians; they only laugh when someone hurts themselves or they've had a particularly large meal!

The left doesn't depend on Marx and there is little actually left wing in absolutist politics of the mainland European type.

Ordoliberalism too....a successful capitalism

It sounds like the type of socialism we have in English speaking countries. Though hopefully it's not tainted by nationalism. No need for a new name for it though; there's already social democracy and socialism which have a huge overlap.

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

teachings????

Marx? We're talking about the workers movement.

This must be the 10th time I've repeated to you that the political left wasn't invented by Marx nor does it depend on him.

And yes, much of what happens in UK society (and many of the benefits that you enjoy too like universal healthcare, sickness benefit, old age pensions, free education, a five day working week, paid holidays and health & safety at work etc etc) originate with the British left which we were fighting for (and slowly winning) before Das Kapitał was ever written.

Even the term "left wing" was coined in France decades before he was born.

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

they love seeing themselves as the good ones, the right ones, the only ones fighting for the betterment of mankind

There may be a reason for that.....

if mankind wants to or not!
Don't we?

There has been no example that after a leftist victory things lik...
had played any role anymore

There has and is. Britain, Canada, Australia, the Scandinavian countries ...

It all boils down to one question. Who should get the most material benefit from someone's job?

Should it be the worker himself or herself and the society they live in or should it be an 'investor' that has never even visited the workplace?

History / Were Marx, Lenin and Luxemburg right about capitalism? [44]

wow - that's interesting

It's roots are in something called Owenism (very worth reading up on), that and a mix of evangelical Protestant self help and Catholic social justice (most British Roman Catholics are industrial workers with roots in Ireland and are staunchly socialist).

Some would trace its roots back to the 17th century Diggers, Ranters and Levellers (though that's a bit of a stretch and you could even argue that its roots arenie late Medieval religious guilds though I'd not really do that f).

Human dignity a leftist value? The Chinese Communist Party

Yes. The Chinese regime are more an example of Chinese culture rather than socialism which they clearly don't have.in any western sense.

Well, you're an expert on leftist thought

An actual Marxist would say I'm very much not.

With Rosa Luksemburg (a Polish hero), she literally lived in a time of exploitation and revolution. Calmer voices are needed.

Among the Polish left, the voices were drowned out by r*SSian occupation, violence and oppression however one id listen to is the late Andrzej Strug. The museum dedicated to him in Warsaw is worth a visit.

One thing that harms the left in Poland, Germany etc is that most of the ideas came late and through Marxism. I'm more used to the British Labour movement which had its roots in different things, particularly religious values.

Then again, Poland did give us the Warszawianka.
