History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

little Central European countries (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania)

Little? Maybe Lithuania. Czechoslovakia was a medium sized European country, and Poland was (and still is) larger than Italy.

This Bohler guy sounds a bit like a German version of Dugin. Central Europe was never a political entity, so the very title of the book is nonsensical in itself.

No. Poles don't drive for pleasure.

I am a Pole and I do. :)

Too much dangerous driving (...) so you can't relax while driving in Poland.

Well, we are a country of cavalrymen. If you don't have balls and bravery of a winged hussar, or proper reaction time, you better stick to trams and buses. ;)

Are the roads that bad in Poland that people don't go on road trips

The roads are getting better every year. 15-20 years ago, when I went to Czechia I was impressed with their roads; these days I'd say our roads are the same quality, maybe even better.

As for countryside cruises - sure. Where I live (Kaszuby) there's a lot of places where you can take them but one, called Droga Kaszubska, is especially famous and the views are breathtaking...

instakaszubka.pl/droga-kaszubska/

If you want to see even more of Kaszuby, including more of the famous Szwajcaria Kaszubska (Kashubian Switzerland), then you can take the entire driving/walking Szlak Kaszubski (Kashubian Trail) - about 140km long.

Sometimes on the weekends I drive to Szarlota, Kościerzyna, or take the countryside road from Gdańsk to Słupsk through Kartuzy (avoiding most of the main roads). It's a lot of fun especially in the summer with all the cultural events going on, local agricultural fairs etc. When one lives in such a beautiful part of Poland, it would be a sin not to enjoy it. :)

Dilove (Rakhiv, Ukraine)

Ridiculous.

Krahule (or Kremnické Bane, Slovakia)

Laughable.

Dresden and Kleinmaischeid (Germany)

Preposterous.

Bernotai, or Purnuškės (Lithuania)

Nonsensical.

We should our footie teams let play it out!

We can agree to volleyball teams.

Geometric Centre of Europe: 1775

In 1775, royal astrologist and cartographer - Szymon Antoni Sobiekrajski - established the place where the lines connecting the furthest points of Europe connect. It turned out that the geometric centre of Europe is in Poland, near Białystok, in a small town of Suchowola.

There were of course multiple mountebanks, charlatans and other quacks who tried to convince people that the centre of Europe is actually in Austria, Belarus, Czechia, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Slovenia or Lithuania, but we would do best to scoff at, ridicule and frown upon their ridiculous pseudo-scientific calculations.

The ape-eared monster of the October-massacres is truly dead!

Hopefully his death will bring at least some consolation to the families of bestially murdered civilians.

History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [487]

Wait till we get to 20th century and atrocities that Polish occupiers did in Ukraine...

Nothing comparable to what Ukrainians did to Poles. Whoever claims differently is an idiot. Whoever tries to justify the genocide that took place later is a lowlife.

Where were you when Polish bishops forgave the Germans and at the same time asked for forgiveness.

What do you mean where I was? My future mom was in the 2nd grade of primary school when it happened. Also, in 1965 there were no monuments of Hitler and Goering in Germany and Waffen-SS formations weren't hailed as national heroes. See the difference?

News / The Baltics states rely on Poland as their main defender against Russian aggression?? [213]

How many fronts today?

Hmm... good point. No single country in history has ever managed to conquer Poland. It always took two or three superpowers to defeat us.

Poland possesses the so called Suwałki Corridor

And whoever tries to take it will have a corridor drilled through their arses. Russia knows this. That's why it would be safer (and easier) for them to go through Lithuania. To which, of course, we would have to respond - not from love to Samogitia but from our allied duty - but it's better to talk less and do more than to rattle the sabre.

News / The Baltics states rely on Poland as their main defender against Russian aggression?? [213]

Russia threatens the West every day.

Who? Some TV muppets? Putin said himself that he doesn't want war with NATO, so why do we need this "we will hit everything in the first minute" rhetoric? And this is coming from a top general. Doesn't make sense. Let them concentrate on our battle readiness (which is still far from satisfactory) so if the sh*t hits the fan we will actually be able to cause some damage. Less talk, more action--that's what I would advise to our generals.

Russophilia

It doesn't take any Russophilia to realise that Russia is not a hostile nation towards us and doesn't have any territorial claims on Poland, and that any war with Russia would come at a very high cost to us, so even if it's "won" would hardly be a "victory".

Once we refused to yield to German demands

Yeah, yeah - "nie oddamy nawet guzika" and "two weeks in Berlin". Remind me how that went?

the prospect of Russia violating Lithuania's state border.- Not on the first day, but in the first minute. We will hit all strategic targets within a radius of 300 kilometers . We will hit St. Petersburg directly - emphasized Andrzejczak.

Zero surprise. *rolls eyes*

When Russia invades Baltics, Poland will respond in the first minute. When Poland is invaded, Germany will send some helmets and France will write a strong letter of protest.

Why do we always have to be the ones putting our arses on the line for others? Pan Generał Andrzejczak will sit safely and comfortably in a warm staff HQ room somewhere whilst it will be my head that Russian bombs will be falling onto. :-/ So maybe, just maybe, this one time in history, this f*cking once, we could shut up and don't stir sh*t even more than it's stirred already?

Konstantin in a pink suit on Red Square

He was supposed to be stepping on a map of Poland, something went wrong there. :)

I tried to do a separate image of you but every time I was unhappy with the result. Apparently to capture the essence of a wild, slanted-eyed Asian/European hunter/businessman who is filthy rich, loves Poland, literature and international finances, supports Vladimir Putin and hates neo-nazis was a bit too much to ask of AI. I got ridiculous images.

How come you forgot

I haven't forgotten them :) Wonder where they hang around online these days.

the Onion story "I wish I were like my online persona"

OMG... no way! People's online personae are definitely more obnoxious than they are in the real life. For example, in the real life I would never tell anyone to eff off and die of cancer; somehow online it seems a less serious thing to do. I wouldn't want to live in a world where people behaved like they behave online :D

Sorry to hear about the trip, it would have been quite an adventure!

I work a lot (and I mean a lot). Ask me about recent TV series or cinema hits and I won't know anything either.

Hmm... I can understand why the artists are upset.

It's the most fun we've had on the forum in a long time :)

Sure, it's all in good fun; we don't have avatars here, so at least AI produced something for us to be able to link the screen name to a face. ;)

As for the appearance, stop complaining, people! What I wrote inside ChatGPT shall remain my secret, and perhaps I didn't quite get the looks right, but I bet the essence of each of the posters soul/character was captured quite accurately. :)

I wrote "torn between Poland and Norway", that's probably the reason for the facial expression.

This AI thingy is impressive. I always thought it was just a more advanced search engine but apparently it can do more.

A fascist too though that's not rare here.

There are decent people among fascist just like there are decent commies. Ideologies are secondary; it's about particular decisions made at particular point in time of a person's life that decides what kind of person you are - how you behave at any given moment (especially crucial moments). I come from skinhead background - despised by most "decent, ordinary people". You wouldn't believe how many solid, sound friends I have from that time.

That will happen in the next life, either upstairs, downstairs, or in a PF Purgatory.

:)

I'll drink to that!

more with blade and sword instead of knitting needles

:)

If you stepped on her toe she would definitely draw a blade, but otherwise a nice, kind-hearted lady.

Let's see whom else I can remember...

Sokrates - basically Ironside with PhD, one wouldn't want to mess with him
Hitman - also a bit like Iron but more rude
the Bulgarian guy (the name escapes me) - Bulgarian version of Espana; I was a bit too harsh on him
the Turkish guy (sclerosis again) - sound fellow, was at ATP too for a moment, then disappeared from both boards
Yehudi - a smart one; wish he was at PF now to give us the Israeli point of view on the current mess

Wulky who used to go on about how tall he was and how big his 'membrum virile' is. In my experience, people who boast about that tend not to have anything special down there.

xD

... imagine if all the former members came back one day. What a beautiful mayhem it would be! :)
