Life / Sexual culture in Poland [66]

Also a lot of catchers rather than pitchers.

In the game of 5hit, I'd rather be a pitcher than a catcher...

The better half likes it when I wear the leather mask with the little read ball gag. She says it covers up my bald spot.

History / Polish pirates [58]

Aye, sails were never a single sheat of canvas,he'd get tangled every 6 feet or so in the rope and stiching ....but sshhhh, its a movie :)

That, and the fact that his wrist wouldn't be strong enough to support his own load... Oh, also, his rate of descent would probably result in broken ankles, at the very least!

You escape by plunging a knife into a sail and sliding down holding the handle.

Debunked on Myth Busters.....

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

The City is NOT an equal opps environment.

Agree, that side of the business is not a female bastion of strength, but your local bank branch would be more along the lines of what I was thinking.

Fire one as an example, but make sure you are within your rights. Then hire another one in his place. I am sure the rest will follow in line when they realize who the boss is.

Keep in mind that construction workers aren't necessarily going to be the most sensitive to gender equality issues as say somebody in the financial services or health care industries might be. Construction is typically a male dominated industry, and it will take a while for the mind set to change.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

The second to the last down was ok. I heard they were really nice looking. I'll take their beaks to the Polish overhang any day

looks like he is stuck on page 2 of this thread and replying to random quotes throughout.....

Genealogy / Do Polish people have big noses? [450]

We have big noses and massive cocks.

I thought Poland was more famous for their pig farming....

History / Poland in a Slavic Union/Alliance/Federation? [335]

There are still many nationalists in both countries who either deny bad deeds or will just turn a blind eye

Fresh wounds....

Poland would be an excellent mediator and I think both Serbs and Croats look up to them in a way.

What qaulities does Poland (Diplomatic Core?) posess that would make them a prime candidate for the job?

i hope that eventually good Polish-Croatian relations may result in weakening of German influence in the region.

Is that likely, given Germany's influencial status in the EU?

That pro-German attitude lured Croatia even in alliance with mujaheedines ((Turkish Islamists and German imperialists always allayed on Balkan against strongest Slavic faction in the region- Serbians))

Is there a way to improve the relation between Croatia / Serbia? Better beat the Germans at their own game, no?

How about Poles and Croats?

We had some good Croat neighbours, before they went back to Croatia. We may visit them this summer.... But good question, how do they get along in general?

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

probably because it's not actually being taught or used anywhere official-ish.

What's more official than this online dictionary?

But it's certainly an American thing - I still haven't met any Poles who knew what "polack" meant in English

Never really heard it in Canada, (other than from American Media) so you might be right...

unless I'm missing something, pollock is unrelated

I've thought about that too, but I think it is a phonetic thing. Spell it the way it sounds (when the insult is flung, that is....). Kind of sounds like Poe-lock.

History / Tuchola in Poland - roots of Katyn? [220]

I see how they ripped open the belly and sewed a live cat there.

I read the content of the link you provided. Unfortunately it made no reference to sewing a live cat into an open human belly. Can't really comment on that.

It seems to me that Poles simply less pedantic and more brutal than Russians.

It seems to me that Russians are a little more creative in linking "relevant" information than others.

History / Tuchola in Poland - roots of Katyn? [220]

So, I assume that Poles deserve this more than Russians?

between 16,000 to 20,000 Soviet soldiers held in the Polish POW camps died, out of the total of 80,000 to 85,000 prisoners

Lets do some worst case math:

20,000 / 80,000 = 25% Death by disease / attrition while the balance seemed to live, probably fed to some degree. Not bad for a few years in captivity....

22,000 / 22,000 = 100% death by murder.

Seems to me the Poles were a tad more merciful.

You may consider this as a mercy.

Maybe, but a more merciful act would have been to treat them per the Geneva Convention.

They simply died or let's say lost their lives trying to escape, isn't it? They were no more than war casualties.

That might be true except that they all seemed to have died trying to escape with their hands tied, about a foot away from a gun pointed at the back of their head, adjacent mass graves.

History / Vikings in Pomerania (near Gdansk area)? [19]

I was at a little settlement south of Mikolajki that might have had a connection to the Norse peoples. They had some interesting wood carvings and upside down trees.

Galindia was the name of the place...

Priests travelling with the Vikings from Scandinavia in the 9th and 10th centuries first introduced Christianity to the Baltic tribes populating the western and southern parts of present day Latvia. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Orthodox teachings, via Old Russian, were spread to the inhabitants living in the eastern and central parts. No written legacies of the languages spoken in this area during this period have been found, though archeologists speculate about the possibility that some type of runic writing system borrowed from the Scandinavians may have been used. Borrowed words in use today, which reflect this early Old Russian influence on the Latvian language, include for example baznīca 'church', grāmata 'book', svece 'candle', svēts 'holy', and zvans 'bell'.
