Food / Request for cake or pastry recipe for an elderly Polish lady [20]

A (very) heaped tablespoon is about an ounce though,

When I was about thirteen, I decided to have a go at making shortbread, but having an aversion to maths in any form, I refused to use the weighing scales (nearly as bad as the Americans!). I looked in an ancient cookery book of my granny's and found the approximate measurements for the flour, sugar etc in spoons. Can't remember what I did about the butter etc. Anyway, I ended up putting so much sugar in it that I couldn't get it out of the tin, let alone cut it and my sister had to come to the rescue and smash it with a hammer! Next time I tried, I used so much butter that we could literally pour the shortbread out of the tin - and it was at that point dear reader, that I finally gave in and learned the art of reading a scales :))

America so they use cups (big ones? little ones?)

I know, the cups business is ridiculous isn't it? Don't they know how to use a weighing scales?! I had reason to investigate this recently and discovered that apparently the cup generally referred to in USA recipes is about the same as a szklanka, which is quite handy. I've since made a few recipes on that basis and it's worked. Interestingly they were Belarussian recipes. I can highly recommend.

Love / Girl from Poland - how to bring her back [36]

Catholics are not encouraged to read scripture

We're not forbidden to read it either. I'm a Catholic and we had a Bible in the house and we studied the Bible in school (I went to a Catholic school). When you come down to the basics, all that counts is the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and the essential message of those is love God and love your neighbour. That's Christianity and indeed Catholicism in a nutshell.

God's character or commandments.

I can't believe you didn't learn the Ten Commandments!

Work / Can I find a job in Poland that requires speaking in English? [82]

My wife is 4 years younger

Poland is quite an ageist place. The highest rate of unemployment in Poland is among women aged 50+. The official retirement age for women is 60. By the time you sort out your arrangements for moving your wife would be about 55 and to be honest her chances of finding a job are small especially if she doesn't speak Polish or speaks only basic Polish. Her best bet is probably to try to find some kind of remote job with a Canadian company where she could carry on working for them regardless of her place of residence - or perhaps she could come to some arrangement with her present employer. Think carefully before retiring to Poland. As Maf says it can be a nice place to live, depending on what you want from it, but it's quite a harsh society in some respects and like most places, the more money you have, especially in retirement, the better. Also, if you're planning on living in Poland, you really, really, need to learn the language.

Work / Moving From Ireland to Poland - Job Hunt [10]

Ah, bless you :) I can understand the pull of Poland for you. Well, you know what Ireland is like. A word in the right ear can do a lot. Making personal connections and contacts is key to success in Ireland and keep working away at that. You're in Ireland, so use it as your starting point. Also don't forget that many UK companies in Poland would be happy to have you because of your bilingual abilities. So don't just go for Irish. It seems a pity that your legal studies will go to waste. I know the two legal systems are quite different but it is possible in theory to practise law in Poland with a law degree from another EU country. Maybe you should look into that in the long term?

I am dreaming about moving over to Poland

Why Dave? Are you Polish/Irish? I see you speak Polish fluently.

Your best bet is to contact Irish organisations like Enterprise Ireland and the Irish Polish Chamber of Commerce. Enterprise Ireland will probably be able to give you a list of possible contacts and may be able to give you some introductions.

I'm linking to a pdf of the Irish Poland Business Directory published by the Irish Embassy in Poland. It has details of all Irish owned companies and contact details for their owners/managers. It's fairly recent but it's about two or three years old so not everything may be current.

Life / Communion money in Poland [27]

a small but cool gift.

Now, now Jon, there's nothing 'cool' about Catholicism. We don't want that child to enjoy himself. We want him to have a good, miserable old time of it. I've just had a great inspiration! What about a pair of knee pads that he can wear when kneeling in the confessional! After all, he's just done his First Confession, so he should be trotting along to the church every Saturday from now on. He'll get plenty of use out of them.

@Roibeard, is the girlfriend any good with a needle? She could embroider the knee pads with the Stations of the Cross - a lovely, family heirloom :-D

Life / Communion money in Poland [27]

they are advising at least 1000 zloty!

Welcome to Poland and the infamous Polish in-laws :)) If you look back over this thread you'll see that a few years back I was horrified at the idea of giving even 400zl but not long after that, I bumped into a neighbour here in Warsaw who was buying a Communion present for a kid in the extended family and it was a digital camera costing around 1,000zl. I think it's bloody ridiculous and I wouldn't do it myself.

How does your partner feel about it? You see Roibeard, you haven't been that long in Poland and you'll find that Poles are conformist by nature and even if she thinks 1,000zl is outrageous, she's still likely to say 'oh, but we must'. My advice is to start as you mean to go on and don't bow to pressure. As you're Irish, I'm presuming you're a Catholic, so you can't be accused of not understanding or respecting the religion. It's supposed to be a religious occasion so I would give a nice illustrated Bible, or there's a range of Communion gifts in jewellers. Give the kid a pressie and a couple of hundred zloty, the equivalent of 50 euros or so.

If your partner is the godmother, then it's the child's spiritual welfare that she's supposed to be mentor and guardian of and she shouldn't be encouraging them to be greedy and materialistic. A grand for a small kid is actually downright disgusting.

Yes, you have a point. That was why I had to leave nursing.

How good it is to have a man's advice! You're quite right, I should stick to being an air hostess and I bet the WTO wouldn't supply me with a lovely, elegant uniform.

she brags about her cooking, cleaning, ironing

And I was recently invited to become president of the World Trade Organization, but unfortunately I was obliged to decline, as I'd already committed myself to a complex embroidery project, involving the depiction of the four seasons on a table cloth with twelve matching napkins, one for each month of the year. The idea is that the set can be used for any and all festive occasions. I hope to complete it for a grand unveiling at Christmas. My great fear, however, is that it may negatively impact my ironing routine.

your scores for neuroticism, self-reproach, depression, and anxiety are off the charts!

Once again you demonstrate a complete lack of insight. How could any lady be depressed with such a lovely new ironing board and rotary clothes line, set up indoors! However, the fact that I appear to be wearing a checked tablecloth is rather worrying. Time to get out the sewing machine and rustle up another lovely, new frock!

Pollyanna? Isn't that a female name which you are using as term of disparagement?

You don't have much of a sense of irony do you? Pollyanna spread happiness wherever she went by her ability to see something good and something to be happy about in every situation. You, on the other hand....................

be given your unpopular conduct on the forum

'Nonsense!', she said firmly. 'I am loved by all, wherever I go.' :-))

Bitterness dripping from every post.

It's very clear that Pollyanna's only knowledge or experience of women is from dry as dust stats and charts - and that in itself is significant. He obviously has a very unhealthy obsession with women, as he spends so much time reading about them and studying them as if they were lab rats.

why would anyone just choose to be tortured alive or burnt to death? i

They didn't. No such practice existed with the Vikings. Viking widows inherited their husband's property and lead quite normal lives. However, female slaves were sometimes sacrificed and buried with their former masters.

they foolishly assume

No, Pollyanna, you foolishly assume that rubbish you see in a movie is true, instead of reading historical accounts.

How did the nords or vikings have it?

I can tell you about the Gaels of ancient Ireland. Even though they were Christians, they retained their old Gaelic customs, so a man could have several wives. Therefore he didn't need to grope women to decide if he wanted to marry one. If she wasn't satisfactory, he could simply divorce her or take a second wife. The woman could also divorce the man if he was a disappointment.

In Ireland, the dowry was paid by the groom to the father of the bride for twenty one years, an annual payment, diminishing with each year of the marriage and the amount was laid down by law.. If the woman brought property of her own to the marriage, eg money, land, cattle, it remained hers and her husband had no legal claims on it. She could continue to acquire property, conduct business etc throughout the marriage and such money and property were her own to do with as she pleased. Divorce was obtainable by either half of the couple, man or woman.

Yes I am a romantic

You're not. You have some very unromantic ideas about women which I suspect are fuelled by reading specious and spurious 'research'. A lot of that research comes from the USA which has a very weird and unfortunate culture and is essentially, at this stage, a failed nation. Also many of the respectable looking men in suits spouting this kind of rubbish on YouTube, are twisting or putting a spin on genuine research.

Let's take an example - sick leave in the UK as researched by a reputable firm of researchers, of a sample of 13,000 workers. Results showed that women are more likely to take sick leave from work than men BUT, though men take fewer sick leaves, their sick leaves are longer. The facts are that in the UK, women take an average of 14 days sick leave per year and men take 16. So in fact, men take more days off than women.

Women are more likely to call in sick because they need to take care of a sick child or because of other emergencies involving their children. Now, the issue I have with that is that the men who routinely accuse women of being lazy gold-diggers, are also the same ones who accuse working women of not doing a proper job because their children come first. BUT a woman who doesn't put her children first, is 'unnatural', greedy, cold etc.

So you see, Grunny, people who have a particular agenda, whether it's bitter misogynists, or angry, man-hating, radical feminists, are not interested in the truth, only in their own skewed perceptions of the world.

Hey, those outfits match your carpeted UK bathrooms!

Now, now Joker, that pic is American, from Better Homes and Gardens 1970, I believe :)

However, if you want to see some truly wonderful outfits, here's my friend Daisy wearing one of her super seventies fashions. I must say, this is turning into a lovely thread isn't it? Instead of a horrid, ugly old cess pit of weirdness, it's a cornucopia of dolly delights!

On the contrary, we're discussing our lovely homemade dresses which by an amazing coincidence are in coordinating cotton prints! You can imagine the tinkling of our silvery girlish laughter when we realized that we'd all had the same idea for dresses :)

Here is one of me and my beloved. This was taken in 1963, if memory serves me correctly. I'm wearing a snazzy outfit called 'Dream Date'.
