News / Polish PM Tusk- dictator or not? What Poles think? [455]

As for him perhaps being a Jew, that info is not stated anywhere that I checked, not that it's any of our business what religion or race he belongs to

Exactly. An irrelevance.

what i know, most of the Germans are Slavic origin, while are Baltic Germans for sure of particularly Polish origin and Southern/Eastern are of Serbian origin.

I doubt they care. Identity is more important than so-called 'origin'.

In any case, why shouldn't Tusk walk hand-in-hand with Kanzler Merkel - better that than enemies and they do have many shared goals.

Australia / Mail problem- Poland to Australia, delivery time frame [40]

I never had problems with Poczta Polska. I received parcels, money in envelopes and never had any of these gone missing.

Perhaps you're an exception to the rule if you're receiving money in envelopes sent to Poland from abroad and actually receiving it.

Other time I send a present, chose too small envelope and it started to open but got to UK in one piece.

Royal Mail deliver things in the UK.. They aren't especially interested in stealing things sent from Poland.

I've been mostly lucky with only a few serious delays however a bank card sent to me was unfortunately stolen by Poczta Polska staff recently.

Life / Gas / Benzyna prices in Poland [29]

The Saudi's control the prices.

OPEC as a whole, though Saudi is the biggest player in OPEC. Part of the current overproduction is the Saudis wanting to weaken Iran and Iraq, both of whom are suffering since their national budgets (Iraq anyway) are calculated at $60 per barrel and we're now at $45.

History / Finding locations of old Photos - Lublin, Lodz, or Pabianice? [7]

The first picture is in Puławy. The structure was called the Brama Mostowa (Bridge Gate). Not too far from Lublin. Some good pictures (it doesn't now exist) on ryki-dawniej.com/z-okolicy-ryk/tabory

If you're interested, it was built during the First World War by the Austrians but didn't survive the second war. There were some plans to rebuild it, but nothing has come of them.

Life / Electricity in Poland: plug and voltage? [73]

Also, what is that internal switch called which keeps a light on for 30 seconds?

You get those in the UK too sometimes especially in the hallways of flat conversions, though they're much rarer and I haven't seen a new one for a very long time. It's just a simple mechanical thing. Movement sensors seem to have replaced them.

nd I'm not sure why, perhaps because of the loose sockets and bad stuff I see all around.

The loose sockets are very common - probably due to the way they're fitted (though I once heard a Polish lady married to a Brit swear blind she'd never seen a wobbly socket in PL !). Generally the electrics in PL are OK - just a different system to the UK (the UK system of ring mains is unusual, partly due to lack of copper during post-war reconstruction). Perhaps I've been lucky. I used to get a tingle from the sink when the electric kettle was on (this in a fairly posh 1991 building), I've had wiring earthed to old lead pipes that had been replaced by plastic ones (I also had that in the UK, so not just a Poland-specific problem) and once, believe it or not, (again in the 1991 building) had several sockets which were blanks - they were fixed to the wall for decoration, but nothing, not even a hole, behind them!

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [345]

Exactly. Reunification came at a great cost to Germany and it just isn't practical here - plus of course the residents of Lvov and Vilnius are mostly not Polish. There is no mass movement in PL to get back territories in the East.

History / Origins of Polish Slavs [139]

Yes - this is true for many places (certainly the UK too) and the names are often very ancient indeed; far older than recorded history.

Interestingly, the archaeological digs around Grodzisk Mazowiecki a few years ago showed that the prehistoric inhabitants of the site they excavated were Burgundians.

News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

"ten Pan" but SLD?? ... questioning election and calling for making them again

They've a lot more in common with PiS than you'd think. Confusion and chaos suit them both - and alleging a fiasco certainly suits them at the moment.

News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

in some areas a vote had already been cast by means of a cross or tick BEFORE the ballot paper was handed to the legitimate constituent to vote with?

I'd say it's very hard to believe. Voting fraud does exist in Poland, at least at a low level (a few years ago a Sołtys was found to have 42 people registered as living in his 3 bedroom house) but essentially things are done correctly in PL and something like that would have come up immediately, loudly and under media scrutiny.

Certain political tendencies like nothing more making than wild allegations, the wilder the better. Paradoxically, they are the ones most likely to get up to something dodgy.

News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

People voted already and their votes could be counted - even manually.

This would be normal in most places - in PL, people love a procedural scandal.

No need for new election. Any complains as for the results/procedure etc can be dealt by court locally as it was done in previous elections.

Exactly, however PiS are so vexatious they'll try anything...

Work / Is it going to be hard for me to find a part time Job in Warsaw? [25]

Will CELTA (from british council nepal ) course help me to find part time job/work in poland ?

Possibly, however as a non-native and without experience, you'd be restricted to the bottom end of the market, where there is currently an oversupply of people all chasing the same thing.

She could be deported for that.

Yes - such a shame. I miss the buskers and colourful ads. The Warsaw Metro has such a sombre and over-serious atmosphere.

At least the second line opens next month.

Since when has the constitution stopped them calling for things? During their brief time in office they even wanted to scrap it and replace it with one of their own...

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Lol thx god charging 2 pln for toilets fashion is gone

A few still do that, even in Warsaw - sometimes having the key behind the bar!

Hopefully it's changed now, but the cafe on Kielce Station used to charge extra for sugar in your coffee...

Law / Old Polish money banknotes - what's their value today? [415]

No. Curiosity value only unless there's something else special about it (and that is unlikely) - that note was from when they had hyperinflation. Have a look earlier in this thread.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

Problem is that it uses two different train stations and two operators...confusing for foreigners arriving in the city.

That's why I wouldn't recommend it.

There is also (for them who live in the south of the city) bus 148 from Metro Imielin.

I've used that. A visitor may well be wandering around that road junction looking for the right stop though.

Mind you, a taxi from the station should be about 50zl tops.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

That's still pretty good, and goes straight there and stops just by departures.

There's also the 188 from Metro Politechnika which also goes door to door.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

is there also a dedicated airport bus to Chopin Airport ?

That's the 175 - it does stop on the way, but goes the quickest route to the airport.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

The 175 bus which stops just outside the front of the station (the main road - you will be standing on the pavement by a very busy road, not the quieter bit at the back with lots of buses). You'll need to buy a ticket from one of the ticket machines by the bus stop and stamp it when you get on. There are also trains for the same price however I would recommend the bus which is much more frequent (several times an hour, every few minutes at busy times).

They were so stupid to install a new computer program six months before the elections. That's asking for guaranteed trouble.

Quite. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they'd never even run a simulation.

There look to be some interesting run-offs coming up too - it will be interesting how that pans out.

About PKW, this is a question of plain incompetence, nothing more. They were so stupid to install a new computer program six months before the elections. That's asking for guaranteed trouble.

And according to today's newspapers they were hacked as well...

If you see the results in Warsaw, it is clear that in quite a few districts local committees are getting a lot of votes, which I think is really great. They know the local issues and problems.

This is good news, as is PSL doing well.

the results of the local elections:

Rare that a party in office does well in local elections after so long.

PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński said that if it were not for the so-called "Madrid affair", the election result of PiS would have been even better.

Some of Macierewicz's antics could also be off-putting.

But I am glad that Adam Hoffman would no longer be preaching his tirades on TVN about how bad his political opponents are

Too much negative campaigning and 'obozy'. A bit of unity and positivity would be good from any party.
