Life / Professional feminists' of Poland meet-up [631]

Yeah the point is that you can't have it both ways can you name a more dangerous job than prostitute?

Agreed. Hard to think of a more wretched one either. Joke about them, despise them, shun them, lock them up; few of us would want to change places with one.

Work / Medical tests before working in Poland [23]

Why can't nobody answer this? Maybe there are here people with experience....

Because most of them either live thousands of miles away or are self-employed.

I've had the mandatory tests for different jobs, and they vary according to what that job is. For office work, they're very straightforward - just like a quick check-up from your GP. They're mostly a formality.

Nothing to do with private medical insurance.

USA, Canada / Should I move to Poland? (dual citizen of Canada and Poland) [22]

my parents are from Poland and moved here about a year before I was born.

'm sorry I'm just so confused!

You and me both.

Seriously, you'd find a qualification from Canada to be more useful.

I'm sure no one would want to hire a 18 year old who can only speak the basics of polish

It would be almost impossible to find paid work.

Also I thought schooling in Poland was free?

Only under some circumstances.

History / How different would WW2 turned out if Poland accepted Hitler's offer [219]

Rather because he admired Prussic Empire.

This is true.

Was all those sacrifices and looses including lost of half of Polish territory and then 46 years of Soviet occupation were all for nought as Poland is back in the square one and in close relationship with Germany.

I remember decades ago, a Pole saying that Germany was bad for a few years but Russia was bad for a few hundred years.

Pilsudski always saw Poland's best interests as looking West rather than East.

Hitler spared British forces numerous times in battle. In the end he wanted Britain (white brother) to join him.

The Fallen might disagree with you. Nevertheless, Britain did have some decisive victories in battle, despite the fascists' best efforts.

Genealogy / Why are some Polish people dark complected, and others very light [511]

In a multi-racial and cultural Europe, there are mulatto Norwegians, black Germans, mixed-race Poles and the rest of the lot!

And all the better for it :-)

Stroget looks much as I'd imagine Dubai or Saudi Arabia, with bright carpets along the sidewalks and turban-wearing, dar-skinned folk selling their wares etc.:-)

In Dubai, of course, locals are very much in a minority, and in Saudi it's about 50-50. There are even Emiratis and Saudis of Polish extraction.

As the world grows smaller, we can expect much more diversity.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

The UK for example supports the existence of "tax havens"

I should hope so too.

Ernst & Young

Ernst and Young is a red herring here and you know it. The relevant fact is that corruption is rife in Poland.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

Ha, ha do you think I spend my entire time sitting on a bench in the courtroom ?

Very rarely, one suspects.

Although it is not wise to write or speak about a person or company, without some source of fact, according to your post re: E & Y, the trial is pending, they have not been found guilty.

Very true - and a company that size and working in that field is very likely to fall foul of regulators from time to time - it's the nature of the beast.

Lamely attempting to run dowm E&Y doesn't in any way reduce the documented cases of corruption in certain countries.

No more than in your country !

As I say, check out the Transparency International stats - Pip's country comes out as among the cleanest in the world.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

Amazing that somebody who claims to be a working lawyer has time to sit trawling the web for news reports about one of the worlds largest accountancy firms. One which she'd thought was a:

dubious agency

Worth checking out Transparency International's rankings for corruption.

History / How different would WW2 turned out if Poland accepted Hitler's offer [219]

Well, the Polish government of 1938 was a lot more similar to the governments of Germany and the USSR than it was to those of France and the UK.

Clser to Dolfuss's Austria though certain members of the pre-war government openly admired Italy.

Genealogy / Last name - Murzyn [33]

Murzyn, means "black person" or a derogatory (slang) term for black person. Can anyone shed light on why this word is my surname? I'm very curious about it's origins as a family name.

Same as the surname Moore, which has the same origin and is a related word.. Perhaps you have an ancestor from afar as Peter-KRK says. Or given that Poland was on two major trading routes, perhaps even from further away.

Life / Unlocking Orange sim card Poland [6]

jon, its not about the money left but i have to use that number for a sms bank transfer validation.

I have that problem myself sometimes. At my bank it takes a week for a new number to be used, for anti-fraud reasons.

I notice on your profile that you're in Germany, which makes it difficult to recharge the card. You can do it online (if you have a PESEL) but if the sim card has timed out through not topping it up, you'll only be able to receive calls in Poland rather than Germany, probably due to roaming costs.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

yes but he would like to stroll naked about a town

Really?

Who are you to telling me I cannot have a gun if I want one - legally.

Can you have one legally as a non-resident?

I don't want you to have one legally. I don't want you to have one at all.

Spot on.

Gerries...

There are at least 4 such beaches in Poland and have been for many years.

People on this forum who are "in Europe" both as citizens and as expats have repeatedly posted about their wish that the laws were relaxed so your assertion that "no one" misses it is patently false

Perhaps you can try to cite any sort of mass movement in PL for the present laws to be changed.
