News / Poland to get the newest version of M1A2 Abrams tank [90]

czolgi-abrams-dla-polski-general-rozanski-wylicza-problemy-i-ostrzega

Great article, thanks! It makes one wonder - don't they consult such decisions with military specialists? :-/

thanks to such military purchases Americans will shut up about TVN and other stuff

I have no idea what they think but from military and economic points of view it doesn't make much sense.

News / Poland to get the newest version of M1A2 Abrams tank [90]

Abrams are not even that good for Polish terrain and climate and expensive like F.

Exactly. Practically useless in the north-east - too heavy, too fuel consuming, too few of them (they won't get more than 200).

Better option cooperation with Tukey or South Korea !

Well, we got those Turkish battle drones that fought so well in Armenia, but it's a pity they gave up the cooperation with South Korea (the Korean tank looked more suitable). Besides, Poland needs modern AFVs more than tanks.

WHAt? wHO IS MAKING THOSE DESCININS?

Kaczyński and Błaszczak. They want to have those Abrams tanks rolling in front of them, during the next Warsaw military parade, while they wave their hands towards the tankers and make silly facial expressions. *epic eye roll*

Years have passed. Even decades. Today it is 2021. Let`s be realistic - Polish tank is still a concept.

Yes, I suppose it's easier to buy an existing tank. :(

My wife has to learn how to operate such a rocket launcher. If not, I will put an embargo on sex.

That's a bit harsh, Pawian. Be careful with such measures or she might look more kindly on the boys from the invading army.

News / Poland to get the newest version of M1A2 Abrams tank [90]

The press conference is over - no exact number was given, but they mentioned four batallions, so probably no more than 200 tanks.

wydarzenia.interia.pl/polska/news-czolgi-abrams-dla-polski-szybka-odpowiedz-na-zagrozenia,nId,5357957

I have mixed feelings about this. The haste is suspicious, unless they expect Russian tanks rolling in here in about 3-4 years. It would be better to continue with the PL01 concept tank but if there's no time, then rush buying probably makes more sense.

Besides, Abrams tanks are too heavy to be used in north-eastern Poland (where they are most likely to be needed), very expensive in purchase and upkeep, and require air superiority not to make them easy targets for enemy planes and attack choppers. If we expect Uncle Vlad's visit, then it would be better to buy gazzillions of the best anti-tank infantry rocket launchers and arm both the professional army and territorial defense with them - give them to every platoon, every squad even, so enemy tanks could be easily ambushed virtually everywhere.

News / Poland to get the newest version of M1A2 Abrams tank [90]

Polish army will receive the newest (SEPv3, 2020 version) M1A2 Abrams tanks. The details of the contract will be presented today.

money.pl/gospodarka/polska-chce-kupic-nowe-czolgi-to-amerykanskie-konstrukcje-6660912547895936a.html

The Abrams tanks are to replace the outdated T-72s and PT-91s. Unofficially the contract is supposed to include 250 tanks, ammunition and crew training but this hasn't yet been confirmed. Jarosław Kaczyński and Mariusz Błaszczak will present the detailed information today at the press conference in Wesoła (the headquarters of 1st Panzer Brigade).

It's a pity that the plans for the PL01 concept tank have been abandoned (apparently), but I suppose it's a good solution to buy weapons that are tested in war conditions (i.e. the Turkish battle drones). However, 250 tanks doesn't sound like nearly enough to replace old soviet-manufactured ones (we have 358 T-72s and 232 PT-91s). It's good to see new equipment being bought, but we should remember that there is still the problem with old AFVs and practically non-existent Baltic Fleet (not to mention the unfinished territorial defense build-up). Well, I suppose the tanks will look good on parades. *rolls eyes*

News / The ruling party in Poland tries to take American owned TV news station off the air [528]

It is a union, sth bigger than alliance.

Perhaps, and that's why Constitutional Tribunals of Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Denmark and Romania - forgive me if I forgot about any other country - have already issued court rulings about their constitutions being superior over the EU law (hopefully Polish Tribunal will do the same today). Precisely for the purpose of the union being a union composed of independent countries. Poland should definitely follow the example of France and Germany in this matter.

the EU debate belongs to another thread

Sure. Just an interesting side topic, but definitely connected to EU media law regulations. :)

Very nice. So why do you mention the EU at all?

Because we, as an independent country, are a part of this alliance and have to take our allies into account. :)

coz it seems you are contradicting yourself now. :):)

Not at all. The EU, in my opinion, will be the strongest as an alliance of fully independent countries, whose legal systems guarantee them their full independence.

You see - there is no contradiction at all - Poland has full right to have judiciary system laws like Spain or media laws like Germany or France, n'est-ce pas? :)

Or are all the EU countries equal, but some are more equal than others? :):)

WE will pay

We have been paying from our taxes for the antics of every single government since 1989. Nihil novi sub sole. The question is: are they, as a government of an independent country, entitled to do that. The answer is: yes.

do you want to pay a few billion $ damages?

If that's what it takes to adjust Poland's laws to EU standards (similar to media laws in Germany or France) as they have been adjusted in the judiciary area (similar solutions as the German or Spanish ones), then why not? I thought that you are an EU enthusiast, Pawian, has anything changed lately?

Which is against basic business rules and standards.

There are some things which are more important than business. Like independence for example.

Do you want to pay

That's the government's problem and their choice. They have to decide what they want to do and what cost they are willing to pay.

There is no doubt, however, that as a government of an independent country they are fully entitled to introduced media law changes (especially if these changes are in full conformity with EU regulations, as it is indeed the case here).

I am really surprised you reason like a child in this case. :):)

I am using cold, unshakeable logic. :) You are letting your political sympathies cloud your judgement.

I already told you you can`t change the rules during the game

And I already told you that according to that logic no laws applying to existing entities could ever be changed, because the old ones are in place and the "game is on".

Porozumienie, claims they are working on amendments to the proposed bill which would skip TVN.

As I said, PiS are already succumbing to external pressure. Miękiszony.

Kremlin intervention in Poland one day (...) Nice you are not bothered by such issues

Your political sympathies would seem to somewhat cloud your judgement on this matter. The law in question will limit equally the presence of foreign owned media, no matter if it's American TVN, Russia Today, media owned by China or any other non-EU entity. It is basically a good law, in conformity with EU regulations - opposing it only because it's proposed by PiS makes very little sense.

Here's a short poem for those who will cry for TVN...
... ;)

Stop travelling such distances all over Europe.

I'm just pointing out the obvious. :P

Have a well deserved rest, then.

I will. Good night, Pawian, and please try not to plot any foreign forces intervention while I'm asleep. :):)

mess up with the Constitution or judiciary like PiS

Very similar judiciary legal solutions are implemented in Spain (and Germany if I'm not mistaken), and in Malta the Prime Minister personally appoints judges.

Somehow, it's OK in those countries but wrong in Poland. :)

I will repeat it again (and retire to bed, for well deserved rest after a crazy day with kids :)). Polish matters should be settled in Poland and by Poles alone. We are an independent country. Calling for an outside intervention in our internal matters doesn't seem entirely wise (to put it rather mildly).

I meant some sanctions which the EU imposed on Belarussian officials

I think PiS would survive this kind of sanctions. As I said before - they have only 2 more years to rule - this should be settled without outside intervention. We are an independent country.

antidemocratic

But the media laws PiS is proposing are not anti-democratic. They are exactly the same as the ones implemented by Germany or France.

Think again: what sanctions against PiS I meant which wouldn`t harm Poland? :):)

I don't know, I never was much of a mind reader. :) Tell me.

Americans are the only ones who are able to do it.

Outside intervention. I abhor that. Polish matters should be settled by Poles only (and PiS has only 2 more years to ruse, so...).

But not in the style of TVPis which brings the memory of communist TV, especially after the martial law.

I agree, it's a matter of taste but no more than that.

without TVN, Poles will have no choice and will be doomed to swallow PiS propaganda

That's a bit too dramatic imo.

I hope Americans put up tough resistance which will be fully backed up the Biden`s administration.

I hope neither Americans nor Russians (nor Guatemalans, Filipinos etc.) have power or audacity to meddle in Poland's internal affairs.

Even if it means sanctions against PiS.

Sanctions against PiS means sanctions against Poland. I'm not sure if it's entirely wise to call for such measures.

This is, frankly, ridiculous. PiS is merely trying to adjust Polish media market to EU norms regarding majority shareholders from outside the EU in the media sector. Germany and France have much harsher laws in this area, so I don't see what the problem is. Foreign owned media, like Sputnik or TVN, have to be regulated as they are in the "old EU" countries.

One can't help but notice the hypocrisy of PO who are trying to enforce a bill to delegalize TVP Info, but they would defend TVN with their bare breast :)

often critical of PiS policies

You put it very mildly. They are openly hostile towards the government and their policies (often to the point of losing objectivity and journalist integrity).

The problem in general is that we have very few independent media in Poland. Most of them are either blatantly pro-government (e.g. TVP, Gazeta Polska) or openly hostile towards it (e.g. TVN, Wyborcza). There are some objective (or semi-objective) weeklies, like Tygodnik Powszechny or Do Rzeczy, but major media clearly stand either on the side of the government or the opposition.

In any case, adjusting media market laws to the EU standards is a must.

I bathed in the Gdańsk bay a couple of times

Well, I suppose it's possible... if one really feels the urge. ;)

people from Tri-City go to Kashubian lakes to dip into water

I like Kashubian lakes indeed. Szarlota (near Kościerzyna) is a nice place.

It happens recently, true.

Luckily it is only tourist who ever attempt to have a bath in the Baltic Sea - we, the locals, only look at them with barely concealed feeling of superiority. ;)

Tricity is probably the best place to live in Poland (and it's not just my local patriotism) - agglomeration with over 1.2 million people but spread over a large area, so it's not really crowded - a lot of parks, hills and recreational areas, great municipal greenery all over the place, relatively clean air, a plethora of cultural, educational and economic possibilities. Unrivaled.

My wife is from Masovia and when I visited her in her parents' house in the summer I remember that it was always 4-5 degrees more than by the sea (and no sea breeze). It felt like visiting Africa :)
