News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

I can already see the pervs linking hands and dancing round the rainbow.

Really? Nobody else can.

When PiS take office such

Public art in Warsaw squares isn't a central government issue. The fact that the city has chosen not only to site the original rainbow somewhere much visited as well as commission a more permanent structure to brighten up another location is a very positive sign.

Do excuse - I mean the Kino Wisła. Though the project does have some connection with the Tęcza and the Trzyrecze people.

It isn't the same rainbow installation being placed there (it's in the middle, by the way) - that is being re-erected elsewhere in central Warsaw. The place Wilsona one is by the same Polish artist and is larger, due to the larger site and the need to span the tram lines.

I heard that the new rainbow will be several times the size, though that's probably an exaggeration. It needs to be big enough to clear the tram lines and it's a more complicated junction than pl. Zbawiciela so it will have to have a larger span. I was having a look the other day and trying to figure out which way they will orient it in relation to play Wilsona - probably with the ends of the rainbow standing east and west. Whatever happens, it won't be the same rainbow which is going up somewhere near £azienki Park.

And following the huge success of the rainbow so far (exhibited in 2 Polish cities and in Brussels), the Mickiewicz Foundation are apparently commissioning more works similarly on a theme of diversity, inclusion and hope.

Anyway, let's all look forward to the new rainbow on Pl. Wilsona :)

Quite. Too much irrelevant and inaccurate polemics from Po3 about how old the buildings are in pl. Zbawiciela. For the record, they are mostly 1950s with a few badly restored remnants of older buildings (you can see this behind Corso), plus that church which has a much greater street frontage on Marszalkowska. It is grey, dreary architecture (including the church) and that site was selected by the Adam Mickiewicz Foundation because it badly needed brightening up. Which it certainly was.

The new rainbow (in pl. Wilsona) is going there because it's an underused and windswept space with tram lines making it hard to use the bits of grass in the middle for much else. Plus the rather plain early-30s buildings around need a lift. A nice bit of serendipity that the old cinema on the north side of the square is called Kino Tęcza (The Rainbow Cinema).

And what better to brighten somewhere up than a rainbow. Colourful, inclusive, a symbol of the storm clouds passing and a new hope.

News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

Be careful of the booby traps, the mines and last but not least the security services guarding the site.

Really this story has everything people want - buried treasure, a deathbed confession, Nazis, a steam train racing across Europe and a secret tunnel.

Fascinating...

of course, in case there is something valuable, not only as per international laws but also as per mere morality, Poland cannot keep belongings stolen from people (including little kids) tortured and killed in atrocious ways norrmal people cannot even imagine.

Exactly. Why would they want to? In fact, who would want to?

for sure a lot of people whould have been looking for it since 1945.

This article says a lot more than most about that. Some good photos too, and a lot of backstory. The authorities say they've located it and are guarding the site:

That location has now been officially named by the Polish government as being on a 4km stretch of railway from the city of Wroclaw, where the so-called gold train is said to have started its journey before disappearing under the hill.
Authorities have said they have seen evidence of the train's existence in a picture taken using a ground-penetrating radar, which even showed the shape of a train platform and cannons.

national

Poland, not being on a rock of its own independently orbiting the sun, is subject to international law. There are clearly defined rules about what belongs to whom. Rules from which Poland has benefitted in the past.

Would you really want to see the Polish government keeping items that belong to someone else.

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

There are lots of examples, most of it at a local level. In Slupsk, when they elected a new President, they found that the city's already depleted and mismanaged coffers were being spent on some fairly off things, including honoraria for local PiS party members.

This case is well enough known but very worth reminding people about

The deputy leader of Poland's opposition party, and former head of the Anti Corruption Bureau, has been convicted of abuse of power and sentenced to three years in jail following an undercover operation that saw officers from his department pay bribes in a sting designed to flush out corrupt officials dealing with planning permission for land use.
Mariusz Kamiński, representing Białystok as MP for Law and Justice (PiS), was sentenced on March 30, by a judge at the district court in Warsaw. The penalty - three years in jail, and a ten-year ban on holding public office - was higher than the three-year suspended sentence and four year ban requested by the prosecution.

Among those that landed in incredibly well-paid job was some unknown mediocre artist, Jan Maria Tomaszewski, who happened to be Kaczynskis own cousin, Adam Hofman(spokesperson and a spindoctor)'s wife who was hired at KGHM and remained there for 2 years on paid sick leave and Jacek Sasins(deputy chief of staff to president Kaczynski) family landing all kind of jobs wherever PiS won elections. There is also the entire SKOK gate where they cast an protective umbrella from any supervision over a bank-like enterprises who finance lavishly PiS propaganda outlets. They managed to create a staggering 3bln PLN losses

Comment was that gold could be Polish, Jewish or Russian. At the end was said that Israel ask for return of gold to Jews

Gold is gold. It has no nationality. The issue is whether or not there are traceable owners/heirs, whether a national treasury or individuals. The entire Hungarian Silver Reserve is still missing and that might be a possibility.

In any case, somebody paid with its life for that gold. Nazism was and is real evil

Very true. All types of totalitarianism and nationalism are pure evil. We should hope that whatever is found on this train will benefit people, either by returning great artworks to public view, but boosting a country's economy by returning national precious metal assets or by going back to families whose assets were plundered.

History / Question about Warsaw Ghetto (shared building?) and Monument [29]

Merged: Ghetto monument sparks controversy in Warsaw

Personally, I think the monument is very touching and a good idea. `it's certainly sparked off a debate though.

While the project has the blessing of Poland's chief rabbi, it has also sparked strong opposition. Many scholars and some Jews fear that a monument to Polish rescuers at Warsaw's key site of Jewish tragedy will bolster a false historical narrative that Poles largely acted as rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust. In reality, many Poles were indifferent to the plight of Jews during the war and significant numbers participated in their persecution.

Yes, and the same deathbed confession did say it was full of valuables.

One problem with the booby trapping is that even if nobody gets hurt, items of historic importance may be destroyed, including art.

Yes, or being taken to the 'Alpine Redoubt' that never happened. There's still a chance of some valuables in with it, but best to be cautiously optimistic. It won't be jammed with Reischbank gold bullion, that was mostly taken to Frankfurt and found immediately.

Statute of limitation would make the country of Poland the rightful owners.

There aren't statutes of limitations about this in international law, as we've seen with the recent Munich art collection.

What it almost certainly isn't, is the Amber Room. That was last seen in Kaliningrad and although there have long been rumours that it went to South West Poland, there's a. a lot of wishful thinking there and b. probably not much left given the state it was in when it was removed from Tsarskoe Seloe and subsequent deterioration.

Some things are still missing - the national silver reserves of Hungary for example. If it contains that, then it is legally theirs. If it contains gold plundered from concentration camp victims, the state would have a moral duty of restitution where possible - they couldn't just keep it without trying.

The same with artwork. If there are owners or heirs of whatever nationality, it would need to be returned; although the condition of such artwork would probably mean that either there isn't much left or it would need long and careful restoration.

If it contains items that are unclaimed or genuinely untraceable, it would only then be the property of the state.

And they have warned that it is likely to contain rusting military equipment.

You mean Poland's most successful government to date?

We can look forward to many more revelations about PiS over the next few months, especially the corruption of some of their members at local authority level.

Hard to know what that has to do with the crime and corruption rife within PiS.

Good that it's being aired publicly.

someone elected to serve the public should understand that public money is to be used wisely and not for obvious personal gain?

Spot on. It would be too optimistic to say that this is the beginning of the end for the PiSuarzy, however we are certainly well beyond the end of the beginning.

A week in politics is a long time. In Poland, a month is a lifetime.

Po3, one person's definition of kitsch isn't another's.

This piece of art is not kitsch however by any definition, and good that it will soon be displayed in a fourth location. The copy that is being erected in the roundabout opposite the Kino Tęcza is also a positive step. It has proved very popular with far more supporters than detractors.

Did you seriously just compare gay people (who simply have sex that you disapprove of) to NAZIS

Sadly yes. Some people just have no standards.

There's certainly something down there however we shouldn't be over -optimistic about the contents. One possibility is that it's just rusting military equipment rather than tons of gold and jewels.

I hope this doesn't lead to treasure hunters digging everywhere. In Rennes-le-Chateau and Rosslyn they've had to employ security guards since those silly books came out. People were getting up in the morning and finding holes dug in their garden by people looking for Templar treasure.

The famous Amber Room from Tsarskoe Seloe is somewhere in Poland. It may even be on this train. The bad news is that amber deteriorates with time, the room was already in poor condition when it was dismantled and is likely by now to be just bags of dried up bits.

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

When push comes to shove, the Adam Mickiewicz Foundation rainbow has been a huge success, already being installed in three locations and about to be re-installed in the fourth.

Sadly there was hostility from the same organised group of vandals who rip up pavements and throw the stones at people, however it has attracted a lot of support. Nevertheless, it has far more supporters than detractors and certainly brightened up a grey part of town.

Great to see a piece of art by a Polish artist showcased in Brussels and I look forward to seeing it in its new home in central Warsaw.

Why the was? It'll be in Warsaw for a long time yet. It's by a renowned Polish artist, and plac Hipstera where the body which commissioned it, the Adam Mickiewicz Foundation, had placed it is actually its third location. The fourth location is going to be elsewhere in central Warsaw.

Plus of course the new rainbow, opposite Kino Tęcza.
