Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

Do you think there is an obesity epidemic in Poland?

I wouldn't go that far, but a friend of mine is a family doctor/general practicioner and she describes the growing incidence of Type 2 diabetes in Poland as an epidemic. Her practice sees 25 new patients per month. Type 2 diabetes is normally associated with obese people over forty, but there are more and more younger people developing it. If I remember correctly, Morgan Spurlock (Supersize me) quoted an estimate of 25% of North Americans with this form of diabetes in the not-too-distant future. Scary stuff, and wholly preventable.

Poles are going the same way as Americans and Brits, I'm afraid. Too little time, too much temptation, too little will power.

Life / Polish Christmas Carols - your favorites? [20]

Staunch believer, troubled church-goer, wavering agnostic, doubter, or confirmed atheist, if you have ever felt snowflakes falling on your face at this time of year, you must love the Christmas season. What is your favourite Polish Christmas carol? Please supply English lyrics if possible.

Life / Polish mentality towards Pakistan [108]

most asians and africans just find a european girl and offer her three grand euro for a scam marriage.

Not that you would generalize or anything.
As a matter of fact, most Africans and Asians stay where they were born. If you are going to slander a billion people, get it right.

Life / Polish mentality towards Pakistan [108]

We Poles hate the Pakis

Weren't you born in the U.S.? If you were, then you're American, not a Pole. Have you ever been to Poland? Do you speak Polish?

They are racist crude pricks

Now that's funny.
Welcome to Polish Forums phillip. You'll find lots of like-minded people here (usually Americans like yourself).

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

Never got sick after tap water

Neither have I. The water in my region is fine. In fact my mother-in-law lives around the corner from a Hoop factory, and the water from her well comes from the same aquifer as theirs. The only difference is that they bottle and sell it as Arctic; we drink it for free.

Blondie should asked around a bit more. Or just drink a few glasses (when she doesn't have to go anywhere one day) and see what happens!

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

Poland has to be in the top 5.

I'd rather drive here than in most other European countries. Perhaps it's different where you live but round here drivers are pretty good. I particularly like the highly developed custom of flashing warnings that traffic cops are near. As for boy racers, the Polish guys are nowhere near as bad as their British counterparts.

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

often bottled water is not better than the tap one (in some areas) so why pay and carry those bottles.

True, but it's unlikely to be contaminated.

my manager said that the water was not safe to drink

Er...and you doubt him/her? Why would he/she lie to you?
Why don't you contact one of the companies which deliver water to offices? They could bring you a regular supply, say 25l/week.

Tap water in Gdansk is safe to drink, that's for sure

What the hell would you know about the tap water in Gdańsk?

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

Typecasting a whole nation is just wrong.

Should be PF rule 21 but it seems to be an international sport.
Poles stupid? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

As a musician I'd say that Poles sing in tune more than most Brits. Can't give any figures from Wiki or an authoritive source on that. Just my view. Americans? Some do...

Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

I would much prefer to get up in the morning and believe it is going to be a great day, then deal with all that life throws at me.

I used to think that before I lived in Russia.

Than get up in the morning convinced it is going to be a **** day thinking everyone I come into contact with is trying to shaft me.

Russia.
Now I live in a civilzed country.
You are so right, Wedle. Most people are OK. The crooks and bastards will always be with us but with a little street smarts and goodwill most of us rub along with our fellow man just fine.

Corruption/dishonesty/cheating is not a problem in Poland and therefore should be ignored.

Nobody's saying that (well, OK, a certain Polish lawyer denies corruption in Poland), but things are definitely improving; you can see it everywhere. Only ten years ago bribery was endemic in almost every area of Polish administrative life, but now, thanks to a lessening of cronyism in the workplace, people are much more hesitant when thinking about offering sweeteners. I could list about twenty anecdotes from personal experience or the experiences of people known to me, but Poles, and people who (really) know Poland, will know what I'm talking about.

Only eight in that one. Improvement! On a forum like this I agree with the policy that posters should avoid pointing out petty language errors that do not impede understanding. I've done enough teaching for one day, but I will say that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Learn some Polish you dumb ukie

I thought criticizing people's language skills was a big no-no on this forum. If not, I'll gladly point out the nine (at least) errors in fat ass's post.

Mods please advise.

Answers written on paper then rolled and stuffed into a biro pen

The latest, if my students are anything to go by, is a thin roll of paper wound around a match. I reckon I could get five or six in the palm of my hand. Must open a new thread: Poles have the best eyesight in the world.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Eyeholes, earholes and arseholes

Unless you find a butcher who prides himself on making great bangers without the nasty bits. There are lots of them in the UK. I used to have an account with a butcher in the north who made excellent sausages: pork and leek; lamb and rosemary; beef with horeseradish. He won awards regularly. The stuff from supermarkets made from MRM (mechanically recovered meat) should come with a health warning. Dog food is better regulated.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

Ach! You grumpy sods. Some of us like hearing 'Another Day in Paradise' twice an hour, round the clock. Personally, I can't get enough of 'I want to break free', 'Simply the best', that yellow Sting thing, or all the other joys of RMF and ZET. My Alzheimer's is getting worse, the docs say, but my Alzheimer's is getting worse, the docs say, but I love it. Did I mention my Alzheimer's? And the Media Markt ads. It's good to be reminded of their great deals every five minutes, just in case you missed it the other four times in the last hour. "I want to break free...I want to breaak freee...' Check out surfmusic.com and expand your radio mind. When I'm off on Sunday mornings I listen to stuff from Alabamha, Freetown, Stornaway, Rekjavik... Who needs local FM?

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Tea should be blended according to the properties of the tap water in the region where it's going to be sold. When I lived in Hull I sent my mother some 'Yorkshire Tea' (that's the brand name). It was great tea, and the box claimed that it had been blended to suit Yorkshire water. When I visited the old girl she said the tea was horrible. And it was, in London. I guess you have to find a tea that tastes good in your area. For me, Lipton's Earl Grey or Yellow Label is fine where I live, but Tetley's is not so good.

Food / Polish polskie pierogi recipe (prepared at home) [72]

Same goes for kaszanka

To be honest, I think the black pudding found in, e.g. Yorkshire or Ireland is a cut above anything I've bought in Poland. That didn't stop me from having some with bacon, eggs and baked beans for breakfast this morning.

Icing sugar on pierogi? Not for me but, hey, whatever blows your skirt up.

Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

What about not being proud as such, and just being neutral about it?

Quite. I am (I hope quietly) proud of some things that I have personally done. My mother was Irish; my father English. Am I proud of Isaac Newton or Shakespeare; Joyce or De Valera? Why should I be? It would be as absurd as someone being proud of the Grand Canyon or coming from the country which was the first to enfranchise women. Be proud of what you (or, at a stretch, your kids) have achieved.

Which did you hear about and which came from personal experience? Hehehehe

What about the smoked cheeses they sell up in the mountains? I'm not sure how they taste, but they look great!

Salty. SALTY. Great grilled. They'd probably make the airport dogs go bananas.

Linen - What's my best bet for the best quality in Krakow

Just google Linen in Kraków. There are lots of sites; some in English.

The hallucinogen stories are pure BS

Have you ever tried it? It's not hallucinogenic but it is different.

It's just alcohol, after all

Not only. It contains thujone, an extract of wormwood. The effects after drinking absinthe are similar to those induced by good quality cannabis but are shorter-lasting. I hear.

Life / Gifts from Poland (I'm returning to my country after a year in Poland) [36]

I've been looking for the chocolate covered plums by Solidarność mentioned in another thread., but no luck so far. Anyone know where I can find them?

I can't imagine why you're having trouble finding them. It's a leading Polish company and their products are on sale almost everywhere. Ask someone local.

I recommend Polish linen. It's not cheap but it's first class stuff. I bought some small table napkins for about 25PLN each.
I don't think absinth is legal in Poland.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

better tourist management, better tourist information, better advertisement...

True. The north-eastern lakes are ludicrously under-developed. While this suits some, who like it as it is, there is a lot of potential in places like this to develop serious tourism money. There are beautiful lakes that would be surrounded by hotels if they were in country with a more developed tourism infrastructure. OK, some might say that they wouldn't be as beautiful if they were surrounded by hotels, but tastefully and sensitively done, they might be even more attractive. God knows, the region needs the jobs that would follow.

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

I always believed that the Americans were mad keen on circumcision because it prevented boys from self abuse

I guess nobody told Phillip Roth (Portnoy's Complaint) about that.
