Very worth reading, and a serious book. A bestseller for a reason; I'm surprised you haven't heard of it. It's used in university economics classes now, and there's a whole series of them. In the first book (or the second), the authors look at why so many people sell drugs despite the low returns and the inherent risks in crime. I recommend it, just as I use it in a limited way with 2nd year and 3rd year undergraduates.


Somehow I doubt that. It's best not to make too many assumptions about the offline history of people you're speaking to online. There might be a lot of surprises...

Everyone has a tax liability, and both taxi firms and FMCGs like takeaway foods are monitored very tightly by HM Inland Revenue. Drug dealing brings in less cash than you'd expect and is far from specific to any one group in society. Benefits are obviously not taxable (and are increasingly very hard to receive in this environment of austerity). Cash in hand work is normal everywhere, particularly for construction jobs, and again not especially associated with any single part of our society.

You'd be surprised, Lyzko. Polish society isn't that monolithic in its outlook, hence politicians like Mayor Adamowicz and others achieving long-term electoral success. Even the huge success of WOŚP despite wailing, whinging, whining and moaning from the conservative establishment is yet another sign of this.

That's good. Donating to Poland's favourite charity is a fitting tribute to someone whose career was always about helping others and making the world a better place. Much better to have a living memorial to someone rather than a Kaczynski-type statue, with the face gurning at passers by and the stone heart as cold as his real one.
