C'mon.. he was hilarious.

A clown.

your understanding of the Polish politics

Do you watch those political TV shows in PL where they ask one politician a question and they spend ten minutes saying how complicated it is, then the next one says he misunderstood and in fact it's far more complicated than that, then the third one says that the other two have oversimplified it and pretends to explain how difficult it really is, then back to the first guy (always male) who says that it's even more complicated than the others can begin to know?

Any of my students who did that would get a spanking. If they can't summarise the basics of an issue in 150 words (300 po Polsku) they don't understand it.

a performer at heart but was badly miscast as presidential candidate...

He's looking at partial outcomes. He'll never be president or PM however he's thinking what he can get in the future.

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1383]

Morawiecki in Bucharest supported George Simion in the elections for the president of Romania.

Very good news today that the centrist Nicusor Dan has won and Romania has been spared a fascist president.

And may soon become one of the most powerful nations in Europe.

Just as long as control of key industries is protected rather than allowing French and German companies to buy them or hold a stake in them.

News / France and Germany plan to flood Poland with illegal migrants. [199]

This has to be the best joke of the year, so far. Congratulations

Or deadly serious, given that not only do we have the strongest mandate in decades but we are also unpicking the damage done by 14 years of Tories.

Just look at Rightmove. All the buy to let "landlords" are selling up. Plus we're actually doing something about migration, have negotiated actual trade deals (with real places, not selling biscuits to Fiji) and our economy is showing the highest growth levels in G7.

Tough shít if you live in leafy southern suburbs; you have a voice enough already. This time we're in charge. Enjoy the extra 17% on 'school fees' and say bye bye to your 'second home'.

Life / Polish Music. [302]

Sobel

Not mine and unexceptional, but ok as background music. Not exactly cheerful, but then again, most Polish popular music is not.

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [674]

Yeah, that is still far too many

Or far too few.

The new proposals for anti- subversion laws are interesting. Nobody wants to go back to the 60s or 70s when MI5 monitored some political currents but not others, however the role of malign state actors in whipping up hatred is well enough known.

What would stand out for you?

Something memorable. Nice to listen to again and again. Or very danceable.

Over the years there's been a handful though nothing this year stood out.

most of their votes from the audience

Even more traditional in some places.

and the hope that our countries will send someone worthwhile, someone just better, will die last! :)

Yep. Someone that would actually sell copies and pack concert halls.

Much of the EV stuff is basically working men's club cabaret or its foreign alternative.

It is not what you have been saying

Really?

Were there riots in Poland? Are riots relevant? The law is the law.

Next time you're arrested and charged with a crime, tell the judge that someone in a foreign country also committed a crime and watch them say "so what".

The guy can't just go around destroying things he doesn't like.

As he will soon find out in court.

of course sourdough

I get that home made, at home. It's nice, though a nice light brown load made with baker's yeast and strong flour is pretty good too, and very easy to make.

The nicest bread in Poland (although the babcias in the shop insist it's not bread) is Bulka Wroclawska.

did not impress....

Someone once moaned to me that his father had been working in the UK and hated the bread. It turned out he'd only ever done his shopping at petrol stations and Iceland. Anyone eating only leathery bread from petrol stations in PL would say the same thing.

was getting... spongier and losing flavor

I've noticed that.

There are improvements, however much of what is sold is still Baltonowski.

I'm not saying that's what happened (probably didn't) but that seems like a more likely scenario.

There was a case of something like that; and of course the public vote can be skewed by large numbers of people in one country who are from another. A few years ago, the UK popular vote was for a particularly dire entry from Poland. This was post-2004. Also, plenty of votes in Spain for the UK and Germany.

all the

Often isn't all. There have however been cases of coruption, some suspected, some confirmed, over the decades.

So, the public in most of Europe is clearly pro-Israel..

Or those of the public who a. watch Eurovision and b. make a point of voting.

@Paulina
And you don't have to try to put words into people's mouths.

Eurovision this year was fairly dire. It's good that the semi-finals boot out some of the worst ones, however they were always the most amusing.

there is still more in Poland.

I don't see that. Just small factories making the same stuff and in better areas, chains masquerading as independents.

Even the ratio on the supermarkets shelves show which is more popular.

Same everywhere, especially that appalling Baltonowski. Nevertheless, all UK supermarkets of any decent size, as well as some in Poland, do sell better stuff.

in 80% of the homes I've visited in the UK

Perhaps that's the socio-economic and educational level of the types who would allow you in their house.

There are many more independent bakeries here producing fairly healthy bread.

There really aren't. Those little places that sell it (and the cakes) get them all delivered from a factory.

Killing in true cases of self-defense might not be legally considered "murder" in the Constitutional or even Biblical sense,

Screw foreign countries' "constitutions" and "biblical" is for the private lives of those who like that sort of thing.

Under real laws, self-defence is usually a defence to murder or manslaughter.

Hard to know how this relates to the reemergence of Nazism in Germany.

He would make a good president within the current system

He really wouldn't.

The guy is deranged. He lets offf fire extinguishers at festive parties, defaces exhibitions he doesn't like and has fortunately now had his immunity from prosecution (what the hell do they need those for? the Soviet Union is dead now) and faces criminal trial.

Gin?

No, they tend to drink vodka, fruit flavoured 'wines' or nasty american 'whiskey'.

The last beerenauslese that I drank was crazily sweet.

The Austrian one was OK, if unsophisticated. The Polish one was as usual desperately bad, the Dutch one depressing and the Swedish one looked as if the singers were geography Teachers.

Something is not right here

Bribery probably.
