Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

I'm Polish

Where about in Poland are you from?

more diverse, like in the First Polish Republic

It wasn't. In those days the diet for 95% of people was grindingly monotonous. Only the wealthy could experience diversity and even then, not all the time.

a lot of Polish cooks are inventive

It's important for a cuisine to evolve creatively. All cuisines evolve; either well or badly.

History / Vilamovian language - now that's something interesting [24]

complex grammar

No grammar (of an Indo-European language) is especially complex; just concentrate on communication rather than precision and any grammar point that you're uncomfortable with will come in time. Besides, some (many) people are 'creative' about the grammar of even their first language so you shouldn't worry too much.

Wymysorys is a rural dialect. I doubt that the handful of elderly villagers who grew up speaking it ever worried too much about grammar.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

disco polo and rap seem

Or that curious crossover that exists between the two genres.

a lot of Poles are ashamed of singing in front of public

Sadly not enough if you've ever been to a karaoke bar (or a church) here.

I wish I could speak Vilamovian

Wymysorys? Sadly you'd not find many people to speak it with.

Here's a basic dictionary:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/Józef_Gara_-_Słownik_języka_wilamowskiego.pdf

Are you a polyglot? How many do you speak?

There's also Hałcnowski if you're good with languages.

I don't quite understand how that works

Traditionally, it's made by rolling milled grain between the fingers until it gets to being clumps at the texture you want. Nowadays there are machines in the factories however in homes in rural Africa it's still done by hand.

The kind sold in Poland (and anywhere else in Europe) is pre-cooked. The raw kind takes ages to prepare.

cottage cheese 'twaróg.

Not quite the same thing. In twarog the curds are cut differently and it's pressed lightly, which cottage cheese isn't. Americans call Twarog "farmers' cheese". There's no exact British equivalent however the nearest thing is probably curd cheese that we use in Yorkshire in baking.

In general what types of cheeses are there in Poland?

Aside from sheeps' milk cheeses and a smoked cheese in the south, Poland has koryciński which is a bit like queso fresco.

Language / Uniquely Polish Historic Script? [10]

Arial

That was developed in the late 80s for computer use.

Polish newspapers

They had their own fonts; nothing rafically different from any you'd see elsewhere however some were quite stylish. There are examples onlike; google is your friend here.

(American) Football

American football matches always seem to be stopping and starting again. No sooner have they started to do something and there's a pause.

naleśniki

The word pancakes covers several different things. From wafer thin crepes via traditional English ones to Scotch pancakes and the American breakfast kind. Nalesniki are within the family of pancakes. Though in English we do use the words 'blinis' and 'blintzes'.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

"Anything other than viginar is criminal"

Must be malt vinegar too.

I like those crumpet things as well.

Everybody buys them but apparently they're easy to make with a bit of practice. I might try.

Everybody says shepherd's pie however officially it's shepherd's pie with lamb and cottage pie with beef. Traditionally made on Monday or Tuesday out of meat left over from Sunday dinner.

it doesn't taste the same

This is true. It's a different product completely.

The nearest ive found is at Macro however there are still big differences.

the frozen food culture

Very much so. There are a lot of "ready meals" in supermarkets, some of them quite good, some less so. Although they exist here, there are less popular, only in bigger shops and the choice is small.

If those photos are tonight's, it looks like we're having the same thing. I put mushrooms in rather than carrots since I had some nice ones and leftover fasole szparagowej from yesterday..

Wtf..is up with putting vinegar on the chips?

Strange but somehow delicious.

Yorkshire pudding

Whenever I've made it for Poles here, they always like it. Plenty can go wrong when cooking it though.

Baked beans for breakfast

Nobody actually eats that first thing (except maybe lorry drivers and tourists who want to try it). The so-called breakfast is mostly eaten later in the day. Personally I hate baked beans and just don't see the appeal. A lot are sold here in Poland though, more than can be accounted for by British/Irish/Aussie residents.

There are a few places in Warsaw that do full breakfasts however the sausages and bacon are always wrong.

UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

that many of the worst people had emigrated to the UK

About a decade ago I was back in my home town and got speaking to a Polish person there. She didn't speak a word of English and refused to believe that I wasn't Polish. She told me that I must have lived there for a long time since I was starting to get an English accent!

more interesting

Nothing is more interesting than a good fry up. Just a shame they don't sell sausages or bacon of the right type here.

buraczki

I like it with buraki smażone.

almost impossible to get yellow wax beans in UK?

For the same reason that it's almost impossible to get swede or salsify here. People get used to their diet and don't introduce something new unless there's a reason or unless someone's marketing it.

Plus, there are a lot of runner beans there, and they're very popular when in season.

They wouldn't do it here, why do it there?

Some probably would, to be fair. I remember reading that in one small town in southern Poland, the crime rate went down 90% after 2004 because the worst miscreants among the local chavs had all crossed the sea.

buy vodka to take to a funeral recently,

Konsolacja. Better than a sherry for the ladies, a tot of whisky for the men, and some ham sandwiches.

Which all counts towards the 5 a day

Not very well, unfortunately.

Anyway, the thread's not about Bulgarian food, American obesity, or the shortcomings of the Polish diet.
