Food / Is brain-damaging vegan fad growing in Poland? [176]

What about nutritional supplements?

Possibly. The Jain couple who are family friends are both doctors so presumably they have insight about nutrition. Most strict Jains in developed countries or urban areas follow a vegan diet now due to the methods used in supermarket milk.

I ate a vegan lunch today. Not because it was vegan, but because the other two choices didn't appeal. It was fine.

News / Previous Poland's government corrupting the media. [125]

I don't remember (or didn't noticed) anything like this before anywhere.

Someone was saying today that they had the same issue in Hungary and a similar protest. I don't know how successful that was.

On the Warsaw Metro today the TV screens just had this message on:

Kapuscinski just a journalist or not?

He was a crossover. A travel writer, a literary writer a journalist..

He'd have probably got a Nobel if he'd lived longer.

I don't think he ever claimed to be an academic historian though.

They effectively can't really socialize with people except entirely on their own terms

Some family friends are Jain (and very religious). They do entertain however there are some oddities especially since their holy men can't set eyes on a woman or enjoy food (they have to mush it up for them so no single flavour predominates).

One characteristic of their diet is that they can only eat veg that has been cut without killing the whole plant. That excludes all root vegetables and onions/garlic. They don't consume mushrooms or anything made with yeast. Some Jains don't like tap water in case there are microbes in it.

The Jains do consume some dairy products.

In small amounts and it's permissible only because the animal isn't harmed. In the west, they're theoretically allowed to consume supermarket milk but often dislike it due to factory farming. Many Jains living in developed countries are now vegan for this reason.

IPN non-neutrality

Do you imagine for a moment that it isn't biased? Even Andrzej Wajda said so.

On the one hand, some European countries already have the tax, on the other hand, the margins are so small for some outlets that this will close them down completely. Poland has a lot of media outlets for its population size, and this is a healthy thing.

The proposed tax is certainly politically motivated.

nb. vegans hate, hate, HATE vegetarians

I wonder why.

most meat or fish free Indian food uses dairy products,

The Jains in India are completely vegan and have their own cuisine. They're so strict they won't even squash a fly.

they are convinced that they are the chosen ones.

"For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people of his own possession, out of all the nations that are on the face of the earth" (Deut. 14:2).

Are your diarrhetic rants

Don't knock them. there's decency, intelligence, talent, wit and integrity in them.

we are not in a position to judge.

We should never judge, however we shouldn't try to conceal the harder parts of recent history now. Or there'll be all the more scandal when they eventually do.

Sometimes I get irritated when British historians seem to be washing the country's dirty linen in public. Better to get it over with and move on though. Or the alternative is not moving on.

Ukrainians

Those guys were young and had grown up in the worst period of history to date. They did what wasn't what they'd had (if that makes sense).

People tried to survive and sometimes survival was more important to them than morality.

This is clear. The issue is the aggressive whitewashing of that fact.

People are more appreciative of (and understanding about ) honesty than denial, evasion and persecution of historians.

You not knowing of the amount of "samobiczowanie"

You assume that a) I'm "not knowing" and b) that this forum is aimed at "Polish readers".

Do you remember the furore a couple of decades back when a historian published letters by Poles denouncing people for being in the AK to the occupying Nazis? There were a lot of people who wish the book hadn't been published and tried to argue that it shouldn't.

Time for a book about the Blue Police though, maybe a film.

in a fhetto or jail fuarded by them?

I'm not sure; I didn't ask. I think he was from Lwow originally however they said he'd been in the Blue Police in at least one place then after the war in England.

however the IPN investigation

Not known fo their neutrality though...

I DO NOT support censorship!

Good. So you in fact approve of him including the testimony of the last surviving eyewitness who lived in the same house as the person concerned.

And disapprove of attempts to use the courts to suppress publication of that testimony.

how come in poland they dont even teach about the blue police

It's a subject people avoid here, however it's high time for some research and a book on them. I knew someone who'd been in them. Not very nice.

I am just saying I don't think the eye witness had his facts straight! Andif he did then whathappened next clearly showsthis person ain't Polish!

She did and they both were. Do you think her account should have been left out of the book?

that Princeton made him a history professor is only because of the juice

Hard to know what you mean by 'juice', however as an academic he is highly distinguished.

Jan Gross is not even an educated

Professor Gross from Princeton? He's a very distinguished academic.

You telling me every journalist who have written about this is a historian?

Now you're deliberately pretending to misunderstand the thread,

the Anglo-Saxon public has to push

The New York Times?

Your doctor fetish.

Neighbour, rather than fetish. And she doesn't harp on about veganism.

I'm an omnivore as evolution made me.

The same, however I'm looking forward to vat-grown meat developing until it's better and cheaper.

What law suits? Are we debating a lawsuit or a historical incident?

Both, of course. Since, y'know, it's an oppressive lawsuit trying to silence historians...

doesn't mean that I think that a state should take action towards a person

Good.

Obviously I think that journalist should rethink his actions!

The historian? Do you think he should have censored the eyewitness account of the last survivor? Or do you mean that the media shouldn't cover the lawsuit?

Then you can ask why the title of the thread is such?

Why would I need to? There are some bizarre thread titles on here.

I am criticizing the journalists publishing this

So you think they should ignore high-profile lawsuits against international historians?

I dislike any authoritarian style rule that includes censorship,

Yet you say you're criticising the journalists publicising this. Make your mind up.

"Polish-Nazi"

Not a Nazi, merely someone who was identified in an interview as collaborating with them.

Perhaps you'd prefer the eyewitness comments be excluded from the book.

attempt on trying to fracture any collective thought or feelings of the Polish nation

Or simply historians doing their job; interviewing, researching and presenting data, without reference to what you quaintly call "feelings".

Don't pay attention

The ones who try to relativise the past are so banal that serious historians don't pay attention and nor do the intelligent public.

Gross's book is in no way a historical study

It's a serious historical study. Unfortunately there are people who try to relativise the sad facts covered in the book.

Genealogy / Cities/Villages - Hawastwana, Stemslaw, Hainistariew and Hainstaodie [16]

This link might help. You'll need to copy/paste it into your browser. Select jpeg as the format and put 99kb in the box for the size you want (it says 120 kb limit here but in fact it's 100kb).

imageresizer.com

The place you put that in is in Section 3 where it says "Target File Size". It has to be jpeg (you select that in the box to the right of the "Target File Size" one). No need to put anything into Section 2.

It's a safe website, I've used it hundreds of times.

they post "news"

It's big news and part of a broad issue about historians' freedom to reasearch and public.

Here's a good article about the case from a few weeks ago:
""I didn't write that I thought he had betrayed the Jews. I reported on the witness's opinion," she said."

cause Polish court in 1950 aquitted

Do you really, seriously, genuinely think that a 70 year old court verdict has any relevance whatsoever to what historians can research and publish today and in the future?
