News / Previous Poland's government corrupting the media. [125]

We live here and now. PiS is screwing up now

Every time they seem to go a step too far.

In the attempt to suppress the media they seem to be following Hungary. After Hungary's step, Radio Free Europe started again with its Hungarian service. It's apparently very popular.

Polish language websites will just site themselves abroad, radio stations will broadcast from Germany on high power transmitters and TV is of course slowly moving online anyway. If PiS start to try and jam radio or block websites/streaming TV, that might just be the straw that breaks the camel's back in terms of an international response.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

would your children be happy with it

It's irrelevant.

If something's material to a historical investigation a historian can quote what a witness says about it. And btw, Malinowski doesn't have living children.

Do you think historians should be restricted in what they can say about dead people?

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

how do you reconcile this

Does it need to be "reconciled" by you or I?

Just because someone allegedly did something good according to a witness, do you think that excludes the possibility of them also allegedly doing something bad according to a witness?

Do you think historians should be restricted in what they can say about dead people?

there are no testimonies against Edward Malinowski in the article

Follow the thread carefully. Read the various other links from myself and others.

There'll be plenty enough added as the scandal develops.

I never found anybody mention testimonies

That's what the thread is about. It's all in the links. Did you read them beyond their titles?

There's plenty yet to come over this PiS led attempt to silence historians. The next few months should be very interesting.

you bring up

I bring up? Have you been following the thread that you're pathetically trying to derail? Or read any of the links here to articles about the censorship scxandal?

It won't go away you know...

To repeat the question for a seventh time: Do you think the eyewitness's testimony should have been censored because it reflects badly on someone?

Or independent reportage, something PiS hate.

I don't know of any testimony that would contradict

A very good article here:

PiS accepts no debate over Polish collective memory; its only goal is to make others subscribe to the party's vision of history.

The determination shown by Kaczynski's party in creating.its own national mythology is remarkably ironic, because it.exhibits features more typical of a communist, totalitarian movement than

your claim

Why do you think it's 'my claim'. Have you actually been following this thread? Or are you just rather pathetically trying to derail it by using failed distraction techniques?

Did you read the article in Balkan Insight?

the court

And Poland's PiS-manipulated court system is not exactly respected any more, now is it....

In any case, it's not prawomocny yet; there's an appeal. It's also interesting how any court here thinks it can enforce a judgement abroad.

What did you think about the article in the link from Balkan Insight?

the court has spoken

A court 70 years ago. Do you think that a 1949 'trial' should limit what academic historians can write today?

"get when you get all those " When I get? All those? Have you actually been following the thread?

1949

Do you think that a 1949 'trial' should limit what academic historians can write today?

And remember, an eyewitness more recently gave an interview that contradicted that. Do you thing that her testimony should be suppressed?

To repeat the question for a second time: Do you think the eyewitness's testimony should have been censored because it reflects badly on someone?

History / Polish nobility - what is the status of princes and aristocrats in modern Poland? [33]

In personal relations it get's easily self regulated,

This isn't 'personal relations'. It's using specific titles, which is why many countries regulate them through the court system. You can't just call yourself a Duke.

Polish nobility

The Polish nobility (magnaty) were only ever very small in number compared to gentlefolk (szlachta) who were 12 to 18% of the population..

And yes there are people even changing their names to prince/princess or surnames.

Not in countries where this is regulated by the courts.

Most everyday Poles probably have no clue or idea there actually still are Polish nobles in Polish society at large

There are very few, and of course it's only informal since the Polish state doesn't recognise titles.

the libel

A dead person 'libelled'!

To repeat the question: Do you think the eyewitness's testimony should have been censored because it reflects badly on someone?

what's wrong with supporting

Why would a government (or their nationalistic proxies) bring such an action about an eyewitness testimony?

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

simple libel suit

Nothing 'simple' about it. Nor are the individual testimonies relevant since it isn't about Malinowski's reputation (and in any case, he's dead). It's about academic freedom to publish testimonies of survivors regardless of what they say.

Do you think the eyewitness's testimony should have been censored because it reflects badly on someone?

We're talking about Malinowo, not the politically-controlled IPN's whitewashing activities in other cases.

Did you read the article I linked to from Balkan Insight? Very critical af the government's shoddy behaviour.

a proxy for the Polish government

how much does airing of a 30 second spot cost

A huge amount, considering the cost of the programme it's in the middle of or between (which is paid for by the ad revenue and nothing else), their offices, their staff costs, the cost of original content, their marketing budget, their very expensive equipment, their transmission licence and a whole host of other things.

Are you genuinely or deliberately naive?

that my posts

You're trying to change the subject.

Now, back on topic:

"A libel suit, backed by a proxy for the Polish government and its right-wing allies, against two historians is just the most recent nationalistic effort to curtail research on the Holocaust in Poland."

"the political right's thrust to rewrite or recalibrate the historical narrative of the past century "

the tax will punish independent media,

It will close down those independent outlets that operate on a small margin, and those that belong to international companies that as business units only turn small profits will fold.

what persecution

SKOK

You're trying to change the subject with a PiS-like distraction technique. The persecution of independent media by the authoritarian PiS regime has nothing to do with the SKOK scandal.

yes I believe they can afford them - printing an add that pays 100 PLN costs perhaps 5 PLN

Did you think the printing costs of an individual advert are the main expense of any newspaper? Or are you just pretending to be daft?

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

It's a noble story, based on a widely-seen Pathe newsreel film made in the 30s showing a group from the Polish Army re-enacting a famous cavalry charge. And your views on that famous director are irrelevant to the issue.

crook Wałęsa?

The President you mean.

Stop trying to change the subject; your PiS-like distraction techniques don't work here.

income from advertising

That's what covers the cost of producing the news, running the TV or radio station, keeping the website going.

PiS just want to close independent media down.

PiS are doing this for one reason and one reason only - to destroy independent media

Certainly. This has been clear all along.

It's nothing to do with 500+ (whatever any authoritarian politician pretends) and it's strange that anyone should raise this here.

Weird feeling.

Very. Most of the main broadcasters' websites are off.

Hopefully it will have some effect, however PiS are hell bent on bringing about a PRL-bis and don't much care what people think.

Life / Poles turn their backs on organised religion. [148]

An interesting article about the decline here:

"47 per cent of respondents now have a negative opinion of the church. And that, combined with the 41 per cent with a positive view, made the church's critics the majority for first time since 1993. Another poll found that, among young people, just 9 per cent regard the church positively."

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

'Mamry jest dużym jeziorem'

The canal leads from the bunker complex at Mamerki, 4km away from the sluice at Leśniewo Górne.

The two ladies? The complex has two parts, the main part was called Anna and the part where the staff lived was called Brigitten Stadt (Bridget Town).
