Not as far as I see it. It was a deliberate move to kill off the Polish elite military who would interfere with the future formation of a pro-Soviet puppet government run by the Polish collaborators. In that sense, it was not "meaningless". Crime - yes. Meaningless - no.

What I find strange is where Poles place Katyn on the atrocity scale. 20,000 vs 5,000,000 is not even remotely close. If you (editorial) hit the end of that scale at 20 thousand, how do you react to 5 million?

I don't think Putin reads PF. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if he were well aware of the hate and the venom coming from Poles toward Russia. I read the excerpts using the included link. Those are clearly shocking and unfriendly to a Pole. If you switch sides, his statements are as patriotic as can be considering the history of aggression toward Russia by the French and German megalomaniacs. So, I am not surprised that Russia wants buffer states - today more than ever. That cancer aka NATO must be keeping those in charge in Moscow awake at night.
