History / Poland's borders throughout history [47]

Some states Even used it as a political statement to underline who is in control of the area.

This has happened frequently in many periods and locations. Even in the UK, however many placenames there carry their origin in different polities and languages.

Name changes have happened of course in cities that are now Polish which had earlier names. Some close to the original, some less so.

Löwe or Löwenstadt would be more fitting

It derives apparently from the medieval German-language name Löwenberg.

Lemberg.

That's the name when it was on the eastern fringe of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. For most of the Nineteenth Century it was of course Lemberg.

In terms of what people call things, it is similar enough. Poles refer to Lviv as Lwów as is their right.

Derry or Londonderry? Leipzig or Lipsk? Borders change (as Poland's have often enough) and linguistic heritage is a complex thing.

If they confused people

It happens.

a stigma for others,

Unlikely (since the person is deceased and without descendants), and in any case usually corrected in the next edition of the book.

Academicals standards and due diligence They actually teach those at universities

Which are certainly followed.

Therefore there's no reason for nationalistic organisations to sponsor politicised lawsuits or politicians to get involved, now, is there..

claims about your education

What claims are those?

a proper research

Who defines what is "proper research"?

protest

There are certainly plenty of people protesting about the attempt to censor academic research.

Poland's western cities to be named in German manner

There are certainly a few irredentists in Germany (as there are in Poland over Grodno and Lwów) however they are few nd rarely taken seriously.

a4 motorway towards Poland and all the signs say Breslau then Wroclaw underneath,

Normal enough, given the location. The M4 in England has signs for Cardiff, with Caerdydd in smaller letters.

Nobody is stifling anything.

That's what the thread's about. Stifling of academic freedom by using the courts on a technicality involving two people, of the same name in Malinowo during the war.

Most likely some activist types wanted some fresh story

They did. Some nationalistic activists who sponsored a lawsuit that is causing much discussion right now. Trying to control the narrative by silencing historians.

German atlases ... Danzig rather than Gdansk etc.!

And most American atlases probably say Warsaw rather than Warszawa.

Polish atlases say Londyn, Paryż, Rzym and Waszyngton.

As for the borders, the current ones are probably the best arrangement. There's good access to the coast, prime agricultural land and a large industrial belt.

are able to speak about the downside of censoring historians. It will have a far more powerful impact.

Academics are certainly doing that at the moment!.

this Timothy chap

Professor of European Studies at Oxford University.

Google him, he writes extensively on Poland. Somewhat conservative in outlook but very sound and very impartial.

Poloniusz's stance on Hollywood

If he's so emotionally incontinent on the matter that seeing an opposing opinion causes him to lose control and disgrace himself, one would question whether an internet discussion forum is the best place for him to be.

Your taking up that topic

As you know, the ttopic was 'taken up' already, both here and extensively in the media, both here in Poland and abroad.

We have to expect American opinion

We've had several, nobody objected (and nobody suggested that it's anything other than the opinion of individuals).

Looks like the case in question is going to the appeal courts, as a freedom of speech matter. Even some PiS-leaning academics are weighing in about the importance of not trying to censor historians.

There's some interesting comments today by Timothy Garton-Ash on similar matters. Are you familiar with him?

So any conflicts between Jews and Poles before ww2 lived and lives on in the U.S today

I doubt it touches most people's lives either thousands of miles away or here. Unless they're obsessives. After all, some Poles are Jews too, and the kid abroad getting hysterical and trying to justify public servants in Poland doing Hitler salutes in the street is far removed from any dispute whether real or imaginary.

As you know, the question here is not what Americans think of each other, it's whether or not historians can freely publish history books without censorship, as the current disgraceful lawsuit is trying to prevent.

an inner American conflict between American Jews and American Polonia

Is there one? It sounds like rabid and hysterical anti-semism, rather ironic in this thread, don't you think? What have Jewish people done to hurt him so badly that he squeals and bleats constantly and boringly? He's still a kid, how have an entire ethnicity hurt him?

. I would be genuinely surprised if IPN started to organize political rallies.

They don't organise rallies at all, however a lot of commentators in Poland are arguing right now that they've just lost what veneer of respectability they once aspired to.

Lies, propaganda, and defamation.

If he thinks the photo of him is defamation, he'll have almost the entire Polish media to sue...

Zionists

There you go again...

Hitler worshi

There was however a photograph taken showing a Hitler salute. That much is a matter of record.

IPN's role is to investigate Nazi

As you know, their 'neutrality' is highly questioned and this latest development does not work in their favour.

Despite your juvenile rantings.

The appointment was made only a few days ago. I suspect it will prove untenable in the long rum.

How many times

Who knows what sorts of deranged acts someone might do before or after being photographed doing a Nazi salute at a fascist rally....

Apart from being appointed to a senior role at the IPN...

Hitler's salutes

Look at the picture.

harks back to the 30:s in Poland and they had nothing to do with Hilter.

Does that preclude someone today doing the Hitlergruß while marching under a banner of hate?

It's worth reminding you at this point that "propagating fascism" is illegal in Poland.

the guy was doing it as an homage to Hitler?

Are you seriously trying to suggest he was doing a Hitler salute at a fascist march to channel classical mythology? Grow up, Bieggers.

The hand in the air salute is typically recognized as a Nazi greeting.

Hence it being illegal in Poland.

I just think it's better that he talks with somebody then rots in jail. Why he was given that position? I have no clue

PiS, and the slide back to totalitarianism.

Yet another one of your cheap drive-by smears

Less of the weird rhetoric.

The Hitler salute is what it is; and illegal in Poland. Are you trying to pretend the guy was doing it as an homage to "the Horatii".

cancel culture demand

Grow up.

Was the painting done post-1945 with the full knowledge of Nazi atrocities in Poland or are you just making a fool of yourself?

Absolutely.

So you trust people making Hitler salutes in Poland?

Not that what you trust actually counts.

News / Previous Poland's government corrupting the media. [125]

An excellent article about it here:

"Modern authoritarians inside the EU don't bother with censorship, they control and limit free speech through ownership and through economic means, like giving all the public advertising to the media they like and large subsidies to the public media, while punishing independent private media by tax extensions or special taxes"

Sadly the guy in the green teeshirt has just been appointed head of the Wroclaw branch of the IPN.

That development (and this lawsuit) just point even more to things going in a very dangerous direction.

your prejudice against IPN

Shouldn't all decent people have at least some healthy prejudice against this?

But hey, you think this guy's organisation can be trusted in the matters of Malinowo and Jedwabne.

Oh but

Unreliable gossip (or just plain fiction), and in any case, tax collection is a matter for the Urząd Skarbowy. Do you imagine they give secret exceptions to companies you don't like?

Poland doesn't need

So you believe in the Communist-era policy on media ownership? Interesting. A true child of the Nomenklatura.
