Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Maf knows best how to season this dish.

Cricketers usually need a lot of marinating.... For a lunch, it's best to marinate them overnight while for an evening meal it's enough to start at 6 or 7 in the morning. A vindaloo works pretty well....

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

Everyone tastes different

Yes, older people tend to have a gamey taste that compensates for their poorer muscle tone.... younger adults are generally optimal, you need to cook them a little longer for the flavor to come out but... well worth it!

Miss Smilla's feeling for snow

Interesting case of translation.... the British version translated the title of the book from Danish very literally. Supposedly the publishers of the North American version were unhappy with the British translation and either commissioned a new one tailored for an American audience or... (more likely) heavily edited the British version for the NAmerican audience. They also renamed it as 'Smilla's sense of snow' which, faithfulness aside, is a much snappier memorable title. I read the American version and IIRC there was no translator's credit...

Not so great as a murder mystery per se (you know who did it pretty early and the question becomes more.... why? and who else was involved) but a great fun read with a broad picture of Danish society in its strengths and weaknesses. I also like the way it neither turned Greenlanders into angelic indigenous figures nor demonized the dysfunction that characterizes modern Greenlanders. The picture that emerges is very much real people with real problems who deal with them the best they can... which is often.... not very well.

The best you had in decades.

Is this crazy British backward talk for 'the worst'? He left everything worse off.... I don't know of any american who look back fondly at his time in office.

Clinton (for all his horndog habits) was actually a good president. Trump was sort of mediocre but the bar had been set very low by his predecessors.

Why not just elect a normal person instead ?

The US tried that with Obama and Biden.... and the results were terrible. Trump was probably better than either of those losers (or W), so you put up with the nonsense to get the better results.

that job wasn't to take a friendly country's sovereign territory.

Like Paulina, you need to calm down. Trump's not going to invade Greenland or Canada or Panama.

I suspect that it's poker talk (meant for russian ears: you guys wanna get out of the 'rules based' order? what if the US decides the same thing?)

The most likely effect is the US gets more.... lucrative access to resource extraction in Greenland (which neither Denmark nor Greenland can do on its won) and increased military presence within the current political status quo. Greenland independence is not a viable option (scale, human capital etc). After some years of increased US presence it might slide into the US sphere as a territory or something but that's for the Greenlanders to decide (nb. many Danes would love getting rid of Greenland since the place is currently a money pit for them).

It amazes me that so many people still take Trump's rhetoric seriously when there is a very long track records showing a big disparity between what he says and what he does...

seem to be OK with the US invading Panama

Cool down, I do not and would not support an invasion. I, in fact, wrote that the canal is Panama's and Panama should get the lion's share of the profits it generates. But it is also a place of strategic US interest in the emerging cold war between the west and the dragonbear.

Chinese presence should be limited to ships going through.

correct me if I'm wrong, PLEASE!

Youre WRONG! There, feel better now?

the world as a football game between two teams

sportification of politics is a real issue.... both sides are all about 'winning' and then they go to sleep after the victory.... this was a big problem with Trump's first administration, those on his side were happy he'd won but then mostly forgot about actually trying to establish policy and/or legislation...

generally he seems more on the ball now.... we'll see

I will also point out that the US is not the primary instigator of ColdWar II (dragonbear vs the west, or... tyranny vs freedom). The US and EU had hoped that both China and russia had joined the maritime order so that both countries could achieve prosperity... that turns out to not be the case and at least the US realizes that while too many in the EU remain mired in denial.

Are there any US citizens on here prepared to criticise US foreign policy.

I criticize US foreign policy on a near constant basis. US policy on Ukraine has been disgracefully slow and concern about 'escalation' (while allowing russia to freely escalate) is/was disgusting.

I knew the Iraq invasion of 2003 would be a rolling disaster as would any attempt to bring civilization to the primitive and savage Afghans

But... with China and russia both hankering for war with the US, the country needs to start thinking more strategically. Limiting Chinese influence in the americas is part of that (as is closer cooperation with Greenland and Canada turning away from its retarded policies of the last 15 years or so).

I don't like Trump personally but in trying to wake up peacetard Europeans about the threat of the dragonbear* he's completely right. I don't like his rhetoric but the aims are headed in the right direction.

or as she puts it here: x.com/vtchakarova/status/1878059418585112582

Which side will you be on?

Doesnt seem so to the objective observer.

So what does your objective observing say about Chinese control of the Panama Canal?

IIRC your'e kind of pro-russia and anti-Ukraine... is that correct?

If It's not about ethical standards

Yes. The US, for all its many and serious flaws, is lightyears ahead of Communist China (and russia) in terms of ethics.

Why would you put your trust in dictatorships?

You could have a special military operation to liberate it from the Nazi regime

Not Nazis... Chinese Communists... run by the party responsible for more deaths than any other and that caused the worst famine in human history (with perfect institutional continuity from then till now).

Do you want to depend on Chinese Communists, comrade?

the creation of Panama for US domestic interests was wrong

So? gonna boycott things that go through it?

The original plan was to use Nicaragua (taking advantage of Lake Nicaragua).

It was a titanic achievement so boo hoo if it doesn't meet your exquisite standards of ethical power politics.

Letting China have any kind of control was a major mistake that needs to be undone.

It's Panamanian and Panama should receive a lion's share of the profits but the US can't allow it to be controlled by an enemy (like current communist China).

two countries could easily merge,

Quebec would be a problem.... I remember years ago before some independence referendum that the CW was that if Quebec left the rest would end up being absorbed by the US (going from Canadian province to US state).

I don't see Quebec wanting to become a state however (since it would have to commit to English only sooner or later).

Nunuvaat (or whatever it's called) could be problematic as well...

But I mainly view Trump's rhetoric as political poker with russia.... he's playing crazy guy and saying in effect: hey russians, want to get into a competition about annexing other places? We can wipe your nose in it because people like us.... we don't even have to invade!

Trump has a talent for putting russia on its back foot so.... we'll see....

Greenland has no real potential for independence since it can't pay for itself unless it gets into resource extraction (which it doesn't have the manpower for)...

I suspect there will be inceased US presence withing the current status quo.

it could be invented a few times in a few places simultaneously.

could be... or could have originated in northern china then brought to eastern europe by the mongols...

absent a time machine it's hard to say, but I was responding to the idea that chinese wouldn't like (didn't have) stuffed dumplings when it's a basic part of the cuisine

But this one is worth seeing. Why???

To see your bite marks in the carrot and the way you broke that poor parsley root?

cock-a-leekie without the leeks.

Does it have parsley root? Polish rosół isn't the same without it.

Life / Do colored immigrants in Poland function better than in Western countries? [295]

migrants in Poland seem to be better controlled than in the West. It is possible that this is self-control.

Cause the Polish social safety net is crap.... they have to work and that makes a lot of difference. Only half or so of the Merkeljugend have ever worked in Germany and a lot of those have been in state subsidied employment....

Soft state - Germany (unable or unwilling to deport.... anyone) vs hard state - Poland (where you have to work to eat).

Differences come from that.
