Samochodzik

Don't tell Arnold that his Hummer was samochodzik.

They can indicate affection

That is why I wrote that Polish was designed for women and pussified poets.
BTW, I hate poets and poetry. They bend the message to fit the form while hoping to get laid.

News / Raising Poland's legal drinking age to 21 [95]

Slavs in general, but Russians especially, do not know how to drink.

Actually, they know how to drink all too well. The problem is that if you refuse to drink with them, you may get stabbed.

Ciemnogrod, with one foot in the PRL.

The fact that they won doesn't count. I got it. Those ciemne voters...

Why is "democracy" so good everywhere but not in Poland?

Actually I find Kliknij and similar EngPol/Poglish fusions really cute :)

I do, too, but I am glad I don't have to use it, and dozens of others like it.
Speaking of cute, Poles have this strange tendency to cutify almost everything - from body parts to anything they are emotionally attached to.
To me, it's a car. To them, it's samochodzik. Or, more specifically, Lexusik. No, I didn't make it up.
It seems that every noun has to have its baby version.

Polish is overly complicated, has duplication

This, like nothing else, reveals the fundamental difference in attitudes. To a Pole, the more complicated, the better. Yet, with all that ability to create bs words, Polish looks more and more like English. Just try to read any Polish publication about smartphones, computers, and the internet. Kliknij? How about just click - with that exact spelling.

Most pilots would rather land blind than have the traffic controllers speak "rich" and "nuanced" Polish.

You just don't speak Polish

Yes, I do. That's why I can compare.
Polish was designed by women and for women. Touchy, feely mess that needs noga, nozka, nozeczka, nozenka, and nozuchna to express how much babcia loves her wnuczke. Never mind my spelling errors, if any.

Europe is so ready for 1984. Quoting from cato.org:

Take Sweden, where not only was an artist sent to jail for exhibiting posters with caricatures of prominent black Swedes, but the owner of the gallery that displayed them was also convicted, and the posters were ordered destroyed by a court. In the United Kingdom, an atheist was convicted for a religious offense after leaving the caricatures of the pope, Jesus, and Muhammad in a prayer room in an airport. And in France, a mayor was fined for advocating a boycott of Israel.

Of course, the Euro weasels have a ready answer: enjoy each day, be nice and everything will be just fine. Do that and you will not need that stupid American 1st Amendment. It allows haters to hate and hurt feelings.

Alcohol is sugar. Cancer loves sugar. Now, tell me why alcohol is good. In small doses, arsenic is good if "good" means harmless.

The evil side of alcohol is that it makes you (editorial) soft and lazy. If you are lucky. Or aggressive and belligerent because it removes mental brakes - if you are not.

The worst is that alcohol destroys marriages, employment, and everything else where the stupid kind of uninhibited "honesty" is a curse.

Russia is dying because of alcohol.

His Presidential library might meet the same fate

Make it the Church of Holy Barak and all resistance will be gone. You know, freedom of religion, the 1st...

Drinking alcohol should be limited to 2 per visit. A bar that sells booze to a customer who already had some before he walked in should have its license revoked and be converted into a homeless shelter.

Netflix Polish shows are quite average,

Thanks for the info if it was meant for me.
I have another problem with the few Polish series I had a chance to see. Polish women are known for their beauty and I noticed it myself during my trip in 2017. Somehow, I didn't see them on Netflix. Is it deliberate to make it more artsy and less American?

Poles are sloppy and feel entitled to their private version of Polish. They create pseudo words to reflect their emotional attachment to objects and persons. They don't follow normal structure - like noun, verb, place, and the method - I did this there how.

They overemphasize and inject meaningless swear words just to sound tough. They blend sentences into never-ending strings and never come up for air.
I often hear Polish at the delis or the gym. I recognize it easily but have no idea what the hell they are talking about. American - zero problems so I am not deaf. Not yet, anyway.

The same with Polish TV series on Netflix. I gave them a try more than once. No clue what the hell they were saying so I needed subtitles. Never again.

I know both languages well enough to detect that what Americans say - sports guys included - is immediately good for print. What Poles say needs some heavy editing. Even those on Polish radio sound like they just discovered Polish. I guess speaking fluently is not fashionable among the Polish intellectual elites.

The only place where the American-speaking, intelligent people sound like idiots is at the Oscars where it's mandatory to fake surprise and act accordingly. What? Me? I never thought I would, oh my...I am so unprepared...

the USA where everyone is polite and no one wants to argue all the time.

In the US, it's actually fun dealing with the people who are just doing their boring jobs in stores and restaurants and are still capable of small talk.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

No, I didn't have a camera in 1966. The pictures above are current as of 2017. My point is to show how things are now and why visiting the old places was not that much fun.

What is your point?

I have no pictures from 50 years ago since I had reason to take them then. I had a good reason to take them in 2017 during my first visit since I left in 1966.

PRL did little to repair the damages?

Repairing is one thing. Brainless morons vandalizing things is another. These pictures show where I used to live back then and what I found 50 years later...

Off-Topic / What do Poles think about academic fraud [7]

information quickly overload and forgetting it all after an exam, etc.

Your post describes to the letter what I remember about my school experience except for that back then life was technologically primitive and politically stifling.

The good thing was that it had no negative effect on us since we, as opposed to the woke boot-licking morons today, knew who the enemy was. If any, we grew up a lot more cynical and a lot less naive than the smartphone and Facebook addicts today.

I don't know if that's the reason why most Polish towns are drab, grey and depressing

You mean like this?

That's Marszalkowska, Warsaw, 2017. Unbelievable.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

What was that all about?

Excellent question, Milo. Another equally good question is why they were asked to leave, to put it gently, from so many other places?
Jews must have a unique problem in this respect or there is a world-wide conspiracy against them. They are the only ethnic group that has formed a special organization to fight their haters, the ADL, with total operating expenses of 70 million bucks a year.

Yet, Lyzko is so far unable to explain where all that hate comes from. No, I am not buying the Jesus argument.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

If I knew that somebody close hates Poles and is ready to kill them, I would take notice of this fact and react to it in so many ways.

You, instead of addressing this issue as it applied to the Jews, turned the tables and made me the object of your Post 615 - a transparently evasive move as my way of thinking has nothing to do with the events that took place decades ago and the historical records documenting said events.
