News / Poland to return to Catholic tradition? [177]

the USA got saddled with Anglo-Saxon prejudices, quirks and inanities

All the ills of the USA, the murder rate, the drugs, the million in prisons, the lousy education, etc. are the fault of the British. Official.

The nation of shopkeepers who know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

Oh, not that one yet again, Pol. Conflating quotes from Napoleon and Lord Darlington doesn't prove anything. In fact your cliche refers to your country, the USA, more than any other on Earth.

You try to tell us that Poland is not a Catholic country too.

Where have I said that? You wouldn't be telling lies about me now, would you?

Try to tell that to a practicing Polish Catholic and you will end up in a white coat alright.

What would you know about that Johnny? You're an American with zero connection to Poland who knows nothing about the country, and has never even been here.

Trying to brainwash a Christian country's youth with your false teaching is a sin within itself.

Oh, so now you get to write the rulebook on sin. You are not God, Johnny. You are sounding more like that braggart Trump with every passing day.

Do you think such teachers should be banned and deported from a 90% plus Catholic country for teaching a sin of Satan ?

Poland is not Iran. Try complaining to the Ministry of Education about sins of Satan, and you are more likely to be visited by the guys in white coats. It's 2016.

Well, that's me damned then, eh Pol? My wife and I were not married by an RC priest, so that makes us adulterers who will spend etertinity in hellfire, right? You should read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, by Joyce. You'd love the retreat passage.

Love / Valentines Day & Polish men [130]

have I missed something?

Perhaps. I regularly used the florist in question (her husband does airport runs in his taxi), and she simply said no to selling 12 roses. She wasn't nasty about it; she just wanted to remind me of the cultural significance.

You pay - you say

The day when the customer is king has not yet arrived in Poland.

A florist once refused to sell me a dozen red roses. Do you know why? She said I could have eleven or thirteen. I bought eleven. Do you know why? Clue: the answer to both questions is the same.

I'd reply to that if I had any idea what it meant.

Yes, you are right. I am biased and prejudiced against people who abuse children, and those who protect the perpetrators.

Life / Child abuse in Poland [64]

I would have thought that in any civilised society anyone with knowledge of a crime having been committed is obliged to report that crime to the police. To do otherwise could be seen as concealing a crime, aiding and abetting a criminal, or at least failure to protect a minor.

UK, Ireland / The "Paracetamol Myth" - Polish people hesitate to visit UK doctors. [51]

a nurse arrived home in her uniform

If she was on her way home, where's the hygeine issue? She would have put the uniform in the wash and worn a clean one next day. OK, you could say the uniform could have become contaminated on her way to work, but you won't see a nurse in uniform in cramped public transport. She would have driven to work, so what's the problem? Also, some nurses live in Nurses' Homes, dedicated accommodation very near their hospitals. I lived in one myself for two years but that's another story ;-)

Two? You won't get much luck from that. A friend of mine had seventeen last year.

Life / I woke up in Poland's Hilton of Drunks after the Juvenalia party. Must I pay the 300zl fine? [49]

The embassy would be obliged to pass on the information to the Polish authorities. There are many crimes committed, proof for which cannot be offered, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be reported. Polish police used to be notoriously venal, but people got tired of it, and now, thanks in part to new technology, things are much better.

All countries are interested in keeping a record of crimes committed by and against foreigners. He should report the crime.

Life / I woke up in Poland's Hilton of Drunks after the Juvenalia party. Must I pay the 300zl fine? [49]

can I avoid paying the fine, given the Kolska workers have stolen my money?

Well, it's unlikely they'd say, OK, we stole your money so we're quits. Frankly, you have no chance of getting that money back. In your position I'd lodge a formal complaint with my embassy. It will at least embarrass the department, which doesn't help you, but might make trouble for them. If you have no intention of returning, you could just go. I think I would under the circumstances.

in Poland a foreigner does not stand any chance against a Pole

That is the truth.

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

According to Stephen Fry, Jean Cocteau didn't even need that. Perhaps it would be better for anyone interested to google this gallic party trick.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

The Dear Leader Chairman Kaczynski married his mother?!

I think poganin might have meant "females" rather than women. We know he is very fond of his pussies.

Real Estate / Cost to build in Eastern Poland - Ideally per m2 [71]

winky, I feel your pain. I live 300-odd km north of you, not too far from Białystok. While I agree that tradesmen can be extremely unreliable, if you use only recommended guys, you'll get much better service. We built a house here, and had very few problems. Perhaps our secret was to vet the people first. There are lots of skillful guys around. The trick is in finding them. Hope you have better luck in future.

Feedback / Is it Polish forum or foreign forum? [159]

how can we Polish accept the fact that this forum has its headquarters in USA and that administers are Americans?

You could always start your own forum and choose Polish moderators. This forum is privately owned by an American, and he can do what he likes. Nobody is forcing you to come here.
